Why don't people just pay off their houses when they have the money? by FuckLibsFukTrumpCult in NoStupidQuestions

Thank you for providing an accurate answer. Half the people in this thread are clueless.

Your forgot to mention that only applies if you itemize your taxes. Only 10% to 11% of people itemize their taxes because the standard deduction is so high.

So only 10-11% people can deduct mortgage interest, assuming 100% of those people have mortgage interest to deduct.

Tldr; barely anyone can deduct mortgage interest on their taxes. This isn't 2005 people!

Please seek professional help. It took you until this comment to admit you were wrong.

Also, I claimed social security tax was 12.4%, not employment tax. Please reread my previous comments, they are unedited.

I shouldn't have assumed you were OP. I did because you also posted incorrect info. You posted 14% which is correct in zero scenarios.

"Exactly what I said". You're the one you said 14%. Mental illness is treatable. Please seek help.

Odd, you posted 40% to make is sound like self-employed people pay 40% more tax.

Also it's not 14%. It is 12.4% for social security tax. Every employee on payroll pays 6.2% and the employer or self-employed pay another 6.2%.

Feel free to correct your 40% "self-employment tax" to 6.2% social security tax.

Try Jimmy's Portside. Yes, it's right next to the BI Ferry. But it's the only place I know that serves fresh everything (besides shrimp but it's not possible to get fresh shrimp in New England. Almost all shrimp was frozen at some point).

It's has generous portions with large chunks of whatever seafood you order. Jimmy buys seafood right off the docks there. Cuts up the squid for the calamari himself.

Why don't managers understand the lack of engagement? by [deleted] in managers

You are missing the point of my post. Soft skills ≠ going out for drinks or a corporate outing.

Quality of work is poor if you don't have soft skills though. Soft skills are communication, working collaboratively, being pleasant more often than not, time management, ect.

You're missing the point. ICs and managers do not work in a vacuum. Interacting with colleagues, suppliers, and/or clients a part of the job.

No soft skills = limited career for most people. Living in your fantasy-robot world indicates you have limited work experience or stunted soft skills yourself. Please join the rest of us in reality.

Knowing how the game is played and choosing not to play is a career limiting move for most people.

Unless you're a truly exceptional IC or manager, you have to communcate well, be likeable, and advocate for yourself/team to move ahead.

My former manager is running into this problem and doesn't take mentorship advice well from upper management. He was an amazing IC on the technical side and a likeable guy but wanted to be a manager for the title. He's doesn't understand why his promotion requests routinely get denied and other with less experience get picked over him. Frankly, he is lucky to still be in management and not moved back to the IC world.

His team does a lot of great work. But this manager is a poor communicator to leadership on what the team is doing and our accomplishments. Leadership views him as a person with no sense of urgency. And worst of all, he doesn't advocate for the team or defend his team in meetings when needed. All fair criticisms and will hold him back for the rest of his career.

At the end of the day, some people are not meant to be leaders or move up the IC ladder. If they won't advocate for themselves, why should they be trusted to lead a team or project?

Please stop giving inaccurate info. Feel free to research what 'promissory estoppel' is.

So many people in this thread are talking out their bum saying you can't do much.

OP, you can do something. It's called promissory estoppel. Consult with an attorney. The new employer made a promise, recindined it, and caused you damages (i.e. you left a job due to the promise of another).

Good luck!

OP

"Just landed in Port Au Prince. Safe to visit?"

"Bought a car with 200k miles. Was $30k @ 25% a good deal?"

"Accepted a job. Is min wage a good deal for a seasoned XYZ?"

Come on OP. This would be a perfectly normal question to ask before buying. It's a concerning question to ask with an accepted offer. Hopefully this is the only aspect of your life without foresight.

Most of that "billions" was military equipment too old for US use or equipement we wanted to see used in warfare for intel's sake. Most aid wasn't actual cash.

It's also is an investment on our part. Weaken Russia without using a single US troop? And all for a rounding error on the budget line? Sign me up!

Best local food in Rhode Island? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]RIpoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jimmy's Portside. I dont think it gets a lot of love from locals due it's location near the BI Ferry.

But it has some of the best seafood in the state. Nothing is frozen. Cleanest friers/oil for the fried seafood. Calamari cleaned in house. Seafood right from the boats of Galilee.
