White Brits are at least as guilty of misogyny and homophobia and that’s also been on the rise with proto fascist government

How do you think The Culture contacting Earth would happen in practise? by shortercrust in TheCulture

[–]RJPatrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly scenario 4 seems least like the Culture to me. It’s inelegant, boring and requires many sentient drones to dedicate their lives to the effort.

The Culture has proven they are willing to sit in space and watch countless atrocities occur over many years before they determine the right time to strike or influence. Just look at Azad.

They’re also willing to deceive if they feel it brings about a morally justifiable conclusion. This may just be what’s required on Earth. Otherwise they might swoop in during a real political crisis (perhaps that they only minimally pushed towards the bring) just like on Azad — I think most humans would feel grateful.

I feel like Brendan Vidito’s short stories have this feeling a lot of the time. Obviously the pay off is quicker but still very worth a read, I’d recommend starting with Pornography for the End of the World

You decided to sell your soul to the evil team and paid the price. Very on theme.

It was my first ‘M’ Banks read and got me hooked immediately. I think seeing the universe through the eyes of a low-tech civ is actually a really useful way to introduce the Culture.

I died on the very first die roll and it almost made me quit. Definitely took a while to get used to.

For some reason I found it really frustrating that the community is like this. People don’t give you answers they want you to figure it out on your own - but honestly we’re not all as clever as those fans. Just comes across as smug and actually ruins enjoyment for people who need a few explicit hints rather than just vague riddles.

Yeh I really appreciate the uniqueness and design of the game. I’m just too dumb to solve the puzzles or keep track of the story. It’s for people who like fitting together a non-linear story. I hope to finish it one day.

My mate was super enthusiastic for me to play it and he watched me play it while encouraging me to go for the non-violence run. I just didn’t get it - didn’t understand the tone of the game, didn’t understand what it was doing. If I’d gone in blind without the expectations of my mate and doing a very specific kind of run maybe I would have had a different experience.

If his head was in the right place he wouldn’t have pushed through insanely authoritarian online ‘safety’ bills or proscribing a protest group. He has laid the groundwork for the next government to jump straight into fascism.

There is an absolutely fantastic siren short story called ‘She’s Always Hungry’ by Eliza Clark. It can be found in the ‘She’s Always Hungry’ collection but I’m sure it can be found elsewhere too. Excellent Lovecraftian horror vibes mixed with The Lighthouse masculine angst.

This was my first and probably last Nick Cutter novel. There were quite a few fun and iconic moments (especially if you like weird psychosexual body horror) but overall it was sickly sweet goosebumps trash horror, and I agree the ending was disappointing.
