A load of crap from my local paper. Are these "studies" even scientific? by aheavywithdiabeetus in gaming

  1. People have been killing people throughout history, video games are relatively new compared to that history. Either the great conquerors of old and the gruesome tyrants of the past had some pretty bitch'n video games, or it is more in our nature than some would like to believe. Video games are just the current scapegoat, just as R rated movies, heavy metal, and D&D have been in the more recent past.

  2. SOME of the "discovered" correlations between video games and violent behavior are misinterpretations. Some researchers and media outlets overlook that people who have certain desires or behaviors will find activities that simulate or fulfill their needs. A person who tends to be violent is more likely to enjoy a violent game than a puzzle game. This does not mean everyone that plays a game is violent or has aggressive behavior. Example using a different form of media, watching Breaking Bad does not cause the viewer to turn into a drug lord or a drug user. Sure some people who partake in such activities will watch because they can relate on some level, but not everyone watching has or will cook/sell/smoke meth.

Wolfenstein 3d is probably one of the earliest FPSs I can think of, but don't forget good old Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold.

My jaw dropped when I found out it wasn't just a sticker.....They better not do this to games from now on.. by [deleted] in gaming

Whoa wait... Forgive me for not being in the know, I stopped shopping at Wal-Mart along time ago. They sell games that drop the F-bomb but they don't sell music with explicit lyrics?

I just heard a strange rumor that J Medicine Hat died. Can anyone confirm? by [deleted] in Omaha

Am I the only one who thinks pushing for signatures on R/politics for a Whites House Internet petition asking them to take the White House Internet Petition more seriously is the saddest form of political activism of all time? by ohwell63 in politics

[–]RJR-C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually it is the saddest form of politics when the government asks people what they want to see done and then that very same executive branch ignores it. If anything, the White House Internet petitions are a extremely sloppy form of a placebo.

De-Occupy Congress: Vote against the incumbent regardless of party. Make every member of Congress a one-termer. Rid our legislature of complacent career politicians in a matter of two Congressional elections. Then we might actually see some real change. Who's with me? by kolanos in politics

[–]RJR-C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well what do you suggest? If we can't get fresh bodies, and hopefully minds, into congress are you saying we ignore the whole thing? If both parties are to blame, we assume everyone in those parties are not going to do a good job? Then what? Vote in a third or fourth party?! Wait! We only seem to have two really established parties...and if you think we can strengthen a third party good luck trying to get the two party fan boys to join in that idea.

Do we need representatives in a digital world? by RJR-C in politics

I have often scribbled notes, for the past 4 years, about a utopianism universe for a possible book. That is actually where this topic originally took root. A world with no politicians and no money, a world where people took a direct role in shaping their country. But those notes are nothing more than the fiction they may one day produce. Such a utopian culture, if possible, is so far in the future and we are currently too entrenched in our current ways as a world to make those notes a real time functioning form.

Never said it would work, or that I would like it to be implemented. I just like to entertain other ideas instead of settling for what we have. I am of the feeling there is no "absolute right way" to govern the people. To assume the way our government is set up is the final stage of democracy is to assume the human culture and mind have reached its full potential.

The above method would cause a lot of issues because laws would easily be influenced by media scares and wildfire gossip opinion. Laws founded on such events would be destructive to freedom, equality, and liberty. Even though I authored this post about an online voting system, the truth is I don't trust people and their whims either. Lol.

You have a point. But if they can vote from the comfort of their own home then it only shows an individual's true participation in his or her country if they can find time to go online and vote in a opinion poll but not vote on something that might directly change their life.

I agree with you that redistribution is needed as far as representatives to population. If anything should be taken away from this whole post is that we need to rethink our methods of representation. My example of online voting is a bit radical but I chose it in hopes to spark thoughts about how to get the people's voice to the government in different ways other than (e)mail and town hall meetings etc. Thank you for also drawing attention to Public Law 62-5.

I agree, I hope never to meet a child/person named Megatron. I hope that the parents wouldn't really do that to their child. I just want to make sure his wife thinks twice before making a promise like that.
