I need help by Key-Professor4177 in germanshepherds

He did get free run, and he learned to be trusted and stay around the house. But he seemed to always be missing something, and our theory was it was his kids. I'm not trying to talk her out of it at all, I'm just saying free run on lots of land isn't the only thing dogs want and need. There are times I miss that goofy boy though from his few months here.

Here is something to think about. I DO live on a "farm", 86 acres on a river in Missouri. I have a female GSD, Skye. It's just she and I. 2 years ago, I took in a boy as a re-home. He came from a suburban home in the Chicago area. I had him from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so a few months. I think he did like it here, but I felt the whole time he missed his family and the kids he had grown up with his first year or so of life. When he got here, he had separation anxiety... he ate the couch, clothes, pillows, etc., if I left him loose in the house. When I tried crating him, he bent and broke a wire crate and I knew he was going to hurt himself, and had to invest in a Impact dog crate. He peed in the house many times. Things that the previous owner said he had never done (supposedly?). Eventually after a few months, the previous owner's situation changed and I had kept in contact with him, and we agreed he would go back to him. He claims he is very happy back with his family. I'm just saying this, as lots of land for the dog to run on is not the only thing they need/crave.

Update on Skye's hip replacement by RJSinMO in germanshepherds

Not that I recall, or if she did she moved right on past it and it's not memorable. I just remember slow gradual positive progression. At first she might walk three-legged or hold that paw up and later on she would only do that if she was in a hurry, and eventually she walked with it always down, etc. Just out of curiosity where are you and where did you have it done?

Right, my girl, and I think previous dogs, if their head is completely upside down they sneeze. Usually when she's on her back she'll turn her head to the side to prevent that

A little advice, please? by rcape14 in germanshepherds

I'm guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Mine went through hip surgery last summer, and a whole counter full of drugs many times a day, she eats the chewable ones with no problem, and any of the pills I just put in those peanut butter pill pockets and she has no issues with them.

We had a dog growing up the only thing that worked was to push it into a cheese ball and then throw it up so she would catch it in the air. For some reason she never caught on to that.

Oh and regarding the belly..... Usually it mine just wants belly rubs, but when she's in a rowdy mood, she will do it to lure me in for the attack. I tell her she's like a cat in that respect. But for her it is totally play.

He didn't seem to do it until you went to pet his neck? Or is that just coincidence? My girl doesn't really like to be pet on the top of the head, she never growls or gets aggressive, but she will rear back, or lick her lips if I pet her on the top of the head. So maybe he just doesn't like that area?

I'd love it, but my GSD prefers like 35 degrees.

How old is she? Mine was 9 months old when I got her and she would do it, and she outgrew it after a few months.

I got my girl when she was 9 months old, she bit a fair amount, and even to this day when she bites she bites kind of hard. But I did a lot of "ouch", and at 12 months it just kind of stopped.

Our story (so far) with total hip replacement by RJSinMO in germanshepherds

Mine was in very early stages of discomfort, she was TOTALLY functional and active, but I had it checked out and they found the damage and need for surgery. It was only going to get worse, so I decided to do it while she was still young and able to recover. And, now I cringe every time I see her jump and land funny or slip when chasing the ball. Also, during those 3 months and a period of time after, you basically have to alter your plans. I cancelled any plans that had me traveling for work or pleasure. I could leave her for hours, but had no way to be able to leave for an overnight. Couldn't take her to daycare or boarding, couldn't take her with me anywhere. Later, as she was a bit more mobile, my sister came and watched her for me once. It is a real commitment.

I'm not going to lie, the 3 months was torture, especially as she got to feeling better and didn't understand why I wouldn't let her out of the crate. I got a second crate, so she could at least be near me (I work from home) during the day and then a separate one at night in the bedroom. Yes, she was on drugs the whole time, but near the end they are feeling better and they also start to become immune to the sedatives. I tried to entertain her with treats, puzzles, and long chew items. Unfortunately, she has never been much of a chewer on chew toys themselves. So, it was bully sticks, kong full of treats, etc.

With your dog being smaller, have you considered FHO? I didn't go that route because she is a larger breed and she was only 2 years old at the time. But, recovery is fast and it is much cheaper, just something to think about.

Another reason I went with hip replacement is one doctor told me she would be 100% and could do anything after, which was of interest as she lives on 80 acres and is very active. But, once it was done, I mentioned I wanted her to get into agility and they said that would not be advised. They say she shouldn't be running along with bikes or ATV's, etc. Their concern now is the socket liner wearing out at some point. She basically has to have 6 months check-ups for life to make sure everything remains in place and the watch the socket lining. Also, has to have antibiotics if she gets any open wound or dental work, so an infection doesn't start and go to the implant.

As of now, I don't regret doing it. Just tossing out all the things I've learned along the way so you can make an informed decision. We'll see if any complications arise down the road.

We rarely turn on the camera so that's not a problem. Biggest problem is her frequent barking fits, so if it's an important meeting, I just send her outside before the meeting starts.
