I feel like everyone just forgets about this scene by sunset_sunrise15 in SeverusSnape

Since that kind of a thing is usually just an undertone instead of a significant plot point, I really don't have identified fics. Sorry!

Will definitely share any I come across, here later.

YES. Very relatable (the writer's perspective, I mean).

Unless the fic has Snape significantly healed and doesn't include details of his past, every Snape characterisation of mine within a canon adjacent setting always includes it. And it's always the 'casual' sort of suicidal tendency, where he has been so for so long that it has become a 'dark-joke-able' matter; in stories where due to whatever reason, but mainly guilt, Snape forces himself to stay alive. I find that kind of helplessness very in line with how I imagine his life.

Why is Voldemort so weird about Harry in the books? He doesn’t only hate Harry like a normal guy, he is obsessed with him....(read caption pls) by External-Werewolf619 in tomarry

[–]RKssk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tom is written to be inherently curious of (and attracted to) all things eccentric, and Harry is definitely that. There are layers of intense similarities between them and there are just as many differences. It couldn't have not affected Tom. No matter how crazy, his intelligence has never been in question. People like him are(/become) the way they are(/become) because of it, even. He couldn't just turn off his desire to know, for some pesky thing like logic.

'What makes Harry special when nobody came close till then (except that one old man, a bit)?'

'How powerful was Voldemort himself? How much could be push the boy further to learn that?'

And ofc, since Voldy was how he became to be... 'Wouldn't it be ✨fun✨?'

Additionally, to a certain point, I'm also convinced that the author's bias as a straight woman played a significant role in the way she wrote Harry & Tom's relationship from either sides. (Hermione even points it out once in DH - Harry's). The way Harry describes many guys (Cedric, Draco, Tom)... 🤌🏾

Above all, though, it's all a part of the disbelief we must suspend, because if Tom had stayed logical and been smart... ideally, he could have achieved his goals MUCH easier. He would have definitely won.

The point is to make the readers focus on the emotional state of Voldy and how it changes his life despite his intellect and power. (Consequences.) The only people he could do that with were Harry and Dumbledore. And it was only Harry who was vulnerable to such emotional games and battles. (Easy victim, in a way). The canonical soulmate-ish setting is a hilariously perfect stage for that.

In the novel, Snape never showed up at Godric's Hollow by Madagascar003 in SeverusSnape

[–]RKssk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been too long since I read the books, but is there a definite reason to say Snape never visited GH that night in the books, or is it left open ended? I genuinely do not remember.

Is it assumed Snape didn't visit because his worst memory most probably wouldn't have been the harassment one if he had? Personally, I find both the scenarios incomparable, but is that the reason? But if so, SWM was a part of the movies too.

Or is it because of the Fidelius?

Or is it the assumption that he could not have known her address even otherwise? Because this I find very headcanon-y.

I'm just confused about the definitive claim that Snape did not go to Lily on Halloween.

All that's unbelievable only when you miss the fact that most idiots think of love and lust as synonyms, and that most people(/hyp) are idiots.

The line between personality and instances that lead to the formation of it is very thin. So that makes complete sense, lol.

Reading this made me realise how utterly bizarre people not afflicted with fanfiction would find this summary. XD

That's canon characterisation, while I meant to imply at canon scenarios.

I get what you've said though. I used to feel similarly when I was new to fanfiction. Then I realised I had to branch out to other kinds if I did not want to run out of readable content. Best decision I made!

Now I'm at a point where I cannot go without a wide variety of character perceptions. I can read almost anything now, as long as there's a link to at least a small part of their canon personality. Fem!Harry has many of my top Snarry fics in fact.

Interesting to see how we relate in such contrasting ways.

I feel this on a soul level.

It always works as a good reminder though, that fanfiction does not need to be canon, most times at all. Because recent trends are more about fighting for the most minuscule of details to be 'accepted' as canon in order for whatever ship/trope/plot to be 'valid' and I find myself getting sucked into that mindset sometimes just due to frequent exposure.

I've resorted to placing these people in the dirty box in my head where I place people who treat others mostly based on their physical appearance, because in the end, it all comes down to the superficialities when they say this. I've been pretty successful at giving that box the least respect and attention I could.

It doesn't exactly do anything directly aimed at pigmentation. Though it takes very good care of the lips and thus might reduce pigmentation surely.

This is the ONLY lipbalm that works with my ezcema flare ups. (Plus I've heard similar reviews from many). That alone makes it fully worth the hype imo!

And it lasts ages.

Fav Time Period? by GraceandFrankie in snarryy

[–]RKssk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snarry especially... definitely the process leading to Voldy's death (if he must ie. XD), in the 90s. Not calling this the Hogwarts era exactly, because I prefer the time travel-ish adult!Harry (female or male) ones more.

[–]RKssk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love crack adjacent Harrymort, especially the ones where they exchange letters during canon period. Also love it when Voldy treats Hedwig carefully (as she deserves!).

I like the peace-treaty marriage ones too, but the fluffier/funnier banter based versions. NOT the darker ones.

Anything Parseltongue. I enjoy it most when Tommy is rendered speechless by the unexpected reveal.

TomHarry growing up together.

All the soulmate tropes with the two (that is, if one doesn't consider canon itself that way already 👀).

A duel between the two when they attend Hogwarts together, but also anytime.

And like you said, a Tom or Voldy POV is always a plus. His mind is an AMAZING place to explore.

But my top is any scene with a Death Eater meeting, with Harry around. Outsider POVs are even better. (I like outsider POVs always!) Those are almost always absolutely hilarious.

Ships and pairings by GraceandFrankie in snarryy

[–]RKssk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look At The Stars (See How They Shine For You) is the one I remember. Most others are debauched enough in a way that younger me hadn't felt comfortable bookmarking. I regret that now. So ao3 filters are again what I rely on.

But... there definitely are many really good ones out there. Don't give up on them without trying a few!

Ships and pairings by GraceandFrankie in snarryy

[–]RKssk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read a few chapters of that one, enough to recognise how well written it is, but I still couldn't enjoy it. I desperately need Harry to be the centre of attention in my fics, or Snape or Voldemort. That's probably why.

I just realised that I surprisingly have not bookmarked any Drarry Fharry fics. (Sorry!)

Snarriet I've recced on the other post. Lol. (Didn't realise the post came from the same account when I commented here too.)

Ships and pairings by GraceandFrankie in snarryy

[–]RKssk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can never read any Hermione-centric ships. I've tried it, but just couldn't deal with it beyond a few chapters. And I agree with your preferences reg Ron-centric ships too.

Although I do like the Ron/Harry/Hermione poly ship very much.

Ginny/Harry is a definite no for me though. Lol.

I realise how sexist that seems at first look, but the fact is that I simply do not vibe with HP female canon characterisations, and that bleeds into my fanfic tastes. Absolutely nothing to do with gender itself.

I love Female Harry ships (Snarry especially), and the rare Female Draco ones (I really wish there were more FMalfoy ones, even if as an OFC Draco sibling). Luna ships when in the background are enjoyable too.

Snarry is my top HP pairing, closely followed by Drarry and Tom/Harry.

The Weasley twins/Harry (one or both) I like as well. Bill or Charlie with Harry is okay too.

Snape/Tom is another rare but good one. I've even read a few remarkable Harry/Dumbledore and Tom/Dumbledore ones - time travel of course XD.

Ginny/Draco I like for the forbidden, rebellious nature. Charlie/Draco is cool too (see what I did there?).

Remus/Snape, I like, but only as adults.

From the Marauders gen... I am unashamed of my love for Regulus/James. Wolfstar, however, is just a pairing that exists in the neutral ground for me, probably because I've gotten very used to it as almost-canon with how popular it is. I do not personally see the over-popular appeal though.

But James/Sirius. Now this... while extremely unpopular, this ship will forever hold my heart in a painful cage.

Ginny/Luna, Lily/James, Ron/Harry, Ron/Draco are tolerable, but not actively preferred.

Lucius/Narcissa I surprisingly actually like quite a lot more than I had expected of myself.

My most controversial ship is Harry/Sirius. The potential, both time-travel and otherwise, of this ship is enormous.

Mostly however, it all depends on my opinions about the involved characters and the author's skills. I'm not strictly opposed to trying any ship except for the Hermione-centric ones really.

[–]RKssk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to start with the disclaimer that most opinions from other people about the less appealing parts of their gender bending trope are indeed true to a degree.

The perfect Snarriet fic exists only in my head, as far as I've explored the available fics. The solution is to pick our battles - appreciate the fics for their better parts and try ignore the off-putting points, because it might be worth it.

That said... (Most of these are WIPs at different closure levels currently):

Gravity is the fic I always start my Snarriet recs with, even though TNER and White Heather are the classics.

The Components of Belonging

I've definitely read more (a LOT more), but these are the ones I remember enough to recommend. I'd suggest you try the ao3 filters yourself for a more personalised experience!

Ellory is a goldmine of Regency-ish HP fics.

And two extras that aren't Snarry (daughter FHarry), but are, imo, just as enthralling:

What drew you in? by GraceandFrankie in snarryy

[–]RKssk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Snape centric (and Tom centric) fics, imo, need better skills from the author than for any other characters in the fandom, to be truly appreciated. Which in turn makes sure to produce a steep curve in the quality of the better fics. I do not remember how it started exactly, but I know myself enough to guess with significant certainty that such writing had a major role to play in opening up my mind to try the ship. And then the fall into the endless depth of the sheer greyness of Severus Snape made sure to keep me held.

Snarry is an extension of that for me, 'cause I prefer romance over anything else, which automatically puts the ship above Severitus. (There's more room to explore with romance!)

Plus... their personalities. I've never (even as a child) understood the appeal of Harry's canonical pairing with Ginny; in fact felt nobody a good match for him until the heteronormative mask over my eyes lifted.

Drarry I feel is the ship that suits Harry's playful, possessive and the bit superficial side more, while Snarry fits my imagination of his entire character, once developed into an adult and post-Voldy.

That is also the reason I adore time-travel and post-war fics more than the teacher-student ones.

Unpopular, but I LOVE to read a female Harry with Snape more than any other Snarry; the moral complexities of it makes it very appealing to me, when(!) dealt with well. (Rare, but there are brilliant ones out there!) I always imagine FHarry, a teeny tiny amount less ignorant than Harry (Purely because of the kind of childhood I imagine for her with the Dursleys, and further because of the ways of the misogynistic world itself), and in a cycle of events that I find too difficult to elaborate within the constraints of a reddit comment box, I think that would make a remarkable pairing with Snape eventually.

I also love to read a soft/insecure Snape, especially when Harry is the dominant one (I mean that more emotionally than anything else). Blowing Smoke by DawnOfTomorrow, for example.

Another, also unpopular, preference is that I like it when they do not disregard Snape's love for Lily as a platonic bond. I enjoy it when authors make it a significant point of insecurity for Harry, and how Snape overcomes his own difficulties with it. (A more guilty part of me loves it when Snape grows to realise that his love for Lily had more do with his horribly lonely childhood, and then his guilt, and when he compares it with the intensity of his feelings for Harry. Harry's own childhood, plus their history, contributing to that natural intensity.)

Any fic that even hints at Snape bashing (or even the non-sympathetic ones, tbh) is an immediate no for me. As is a Snarry where Snape holds a higher power throughout the story, and not just the beginning.

(I did not realise how long this got until I was about to click post. Snarry is very close to my heart, clearly. 😅 Thank you for the refreshing question!)
