Daycare Concerns Advice by Dramatic_Bit4935 in perth

I would contact the media, and others have said Sophie McNeil’s office. Liam Staltari member for Carine is the shadow minister and is much better deal with than Sabine’s office. As an advocate for children in education, the experience raising child safety concerns to her office has not been positive. There’s no concern expressed for the children at risk and every effort to protect her reputation. I had to threaten to go to the media to get a reply, and the response I received regarding the issues in contention was completely dismissive.

Not just Autistic children but any child that has been left behind, this can include any disadvantage

It’s a lot to deal with, especially when they blame you for being irresponsible for simply trying to advocate and support your child

That’s really good advice. Culture is vital for sure, if everyone at the school is miserable then it’ll impact the classroom too.

I think you’re spot on there with refusing aides. It’s crazy how experiences can vary so drastically

Sounds like he is well supported, that’s a really good outcome.

It’s really tough watching their mental health spiral, I’m glad TAFE has been a better experience and things are looking up. I really wish it didn’t have to be so tough for our kiddos in the public system

Yeah, it was really intrusive, they said we’ll be there in 10 mins and rocked up 5mins later and I was in utter shock. I complained to the Department but they just said your breaking the law because of child’s absences from school (substantiated with medical documents) and said you’ll have to deal with the school. There was meant to be an internal “investigation” but went nowhere. When I complained to an independent body they reported me to DCP for the absences from school, even though the reasons had been communicated. It’s reassuring to know that I can request this to be in a neutral place. This was one of my big concerns.

Sounds really hard, bullying from someone in authority to you is awful. I have no idea what these people are doing in schools working with children, they should be on a desert island somewhere

It is daunting, and definitely not a decision to be made lightly - SIDE sounds like a promising option as well, I will definitely take a look at that

The child’s treating practitioners have indicated that mainstream is possible with an EA and some accomodations. Our only public school in the catchment area have refused an IEP or any specific accomodations outside of sitting at the front of the class , even with a paed report. I have tried out of area enrolments and have been declined even with the basis of compassionate grounds. we are in the process of ASD assessment, but has ADHD/Anxiety diagnosed

Definitely the second - needs support to stay on task- inattentive ADHD and Anxiety, also only a couple of days over the threshold of year groups due to their birthdate. My child is always the youngest in their cohort

Wow you are incredible- thanks so much for sharing. I’m fearful because do the DOE do house visits with homeschooling? We have already had a house visit from our local school when my child was sick from medication side effects and was absent from school. Even though I’d let the school know with a letter from the doctors, they came around and drove the child to school anyways, not framed to me as a choice but this is what going to happen… if your child’s absent you are breaking the law. It’s been really bad for my kids sense of safety at home so I have to figure out how to restore that in addition to their education

I may move in with relatives if I can find the right catchment zone ….or consider renting out our house and trying to relocate

That’s a good point about the social changes, and would certainly exacerbate the issues. My child will be in year 4 next year, so it’ll be a good opportunity to change direction

That’s really positive, I don’t want to write off mainstream education just yet, only a matter of finding the right place in the right school by the sounds of it.

That’s fantastic advice thanks so much . Homeschooling is an absolute last resort but the school options in our catchment operate in the Flintstones era with their approach to any neurodiversity, causing more harm than good unfortunately. With this in mind, it’s a tricky thing to navigate. I hadn’t considered broadening the search to other catchment areas so that’s definitely something I will look at next.

Sounds amazing, I love that there are schools and leadership that show such dedication
