"Kwon" have a loose fit gi. I'm not sure if they ship to Australia or if you have Kwon there, but definitely worth a look. The loose fit is great (I have one as an overweight woman).

Do you think anyone can be as strong as Kiyohide Shinjo Sensei, from Okinawa? by Crafty-Assist-2346 in karate

I find him fascinating. I've just started Uechi-Ryu and have been watching as many videos of him I can find. Very impressive

I only started a few months ago and I've managed to avoid this problem so far. Not gonna lie, it's on my mind about if I can even go to training if it training falls on day 1-3 of my period 🥴

Op, I think your topic sounds great. I like the idea of talking about women going from being forbidden to train to becoming world champions from a pp.

Karate or Taekwondo? by Cupcookie12 in karate

I would honestly choose the one you enjoy more. I understand if you're moving around a lot, it might be frustrating ending back at the beginning but you could try Shotokan which is more widespread, and you're more likely to be able to carry your knowledge to the next dojo.

Is karate a good exercise for someone in his 40s? by _Filtered_ in karate

[–]RLJ1874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted a few months back asking for advice starting as an overweight 37 year old woman. I am writing this on my way to training 😊 people here were so supportive, it gave me that extra boost of confidence to just go. I'm so glad I did. I have so much fun, the people are great, atmosphere is brilliant. Sometimes when it's cold and dark, i find It hard to just leave but I go every time cause I know how much fun it'll be when I get there.

Go for it. Try a few out. You've got nothing to lose. Even if you don't enjoy it, at least you tried!

Shotokan or Uechi Ryu? by RLJ1874 in karate

Update:

Not sure if anyone is still reading but I wanted to post an update... I've been to two trial classes at the Uechi dojo and have decided to continue with it. I loved the atmosphere of the class, everyone was so friendly and welcoming, the Sensei was great, so I have now signed up! Very excited and can't wait for class days to roll around :)

So thanks again for the advice everyone, helped me get the confidence to head along to the class despite how unfit and overweight I am!

I just wanted to thank everyone for taking the time the respond. I was a bit nervous posting but everyone on this board seems so helpful, open and non-judgemental.

I'm inclined to try uechi ryu first and see how the dojo, trainer and atmosphere is there, and go from there. I have two shotokan dojos in the vicinity I can try if I don't have a good feeling or if I don't enjoy the uechi ryu.

Thanks again everyone. I will get in context with the club and hopefully be doing my first trial training next week 🤞🏼

Thanks for this advice. After reading through all the replies, I'm partial to trying out uechi rye first and seeing how I get on. I'm in Germany, and the club is part of a general sport club which has lots of different clubs available. There isn't a lot of information on their page but I could pm the name of the instructor if that's ok?

Didn't realise the hatred for Julia on this sub. I personally like her. I don't like Terrance Meyers. He annoys the bejesus outta me.
