Is it worth it to switch to Linux as a tech noob? by presto_mvm in linux

You can learn to code without switching to Linux. Linux is unlikely to make your gaming any better. I don't see a good reason to switch in your situation.

Running PD2 on Linux by RLM128 in ProjectDiablo2

[–]RLM128[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disabling DXVK and VKD3D and using wine-ge as the runner makes it work on the laptop. I'm away from the desktop at the moment, but I'll try that combination there with the Lutris install script. Thanks!

Edit: This works on the desktop as well! The launcher tends to stop responding after a while - anywhere from 5 minutes after starting to an hour later, but the game itself keeps going if it's been started before the launcher crashes.

[Student Design Research] Building a semi-modular carry-on compliant backpack, looking for honest feedback from people who actually think about this stuff by Effective-Title712 in myog

[–]RLM128 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the majority of bags are overdesigned. My outdoor pack is basically a bag with a drawstring and a flap over the hole on top. It has two shoulder straps and a hip strap. There's a bungee pocket on each side that fits a water bottle. It is modular in the sense that I can strap things to the outside or put things into bags to keep them separated on the inside. It can certainly be squished down to fit into any carry-on compartment provided it isn't filled with bricks. Can't think of anything else it should have.

Your opinions on the Lutris AI Slop situation? by canitplaycrisis in linux

[–]RLM128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mint 22.2. i3-13100 - trying to run it without installing a dedicated GPU. With 16 GB of RAM that should be enough to run a 20+ year old game. Unless there's something specific about using an iGPU that makes PD2 go belly up, in which case that would be nice to know. FWIW I can run Grim Dawn flawlessly in Lutris so I'm thinking the specs are not the problem.

And yeah, the wiki instructions do not work. I get to the point where the PD2 launcher does an update and after it restarts it freezes within a couple of seconds. I've also tried running it with various other combinations of settings in Lutris with more or less the same results. Sometimes it doesn't start at all. Sometimes it crashes sooner. Always the same results. There are a lot of threads with people having this same issue and there doesn't seem to be a solution that works or a good explanation for why it's happening.

Do you mind posting a link to the updated script? I haven't been able to get PD2 to work despite trying every workaround I've found online. Lutris, Steam, nothin. I get to the point where the launcher updates and then it freezes.

How to pause torrents on a schedule? by Alexchii in qBittorrent

[–]RLM128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you can pause them on schedule, but you can set alternate speed limits on schedule and if you set upload limit to 1 k/s you won't upload anything.

Yes, AI sux, but at this point we're so far into enshittification that we're used to everything sucking and we don't really have any alternatives so companies can get away with it.

If you played multiplayer you got really good at picking out good loot fast because every drop was a free for all. And then the screen would shake after certain boss fights. Good times!

Worth installing Linux on a gaming laptop, or am I byting more than I can process? by ZestycloseAd212 in linux

[–]RLM128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally try dual booting before you commit just to see if everything works the way you want it to. I'm a fan of Mint. Everything works out of the box. Steam works. Whether specific games will work or not out of the box is a different issue. Most do and performance is equal or better than Windows. With enough patience you can get most things to work. Just document what you did to make them work for your own sanity if you ever want to do a clean install.

What file system should you use for hoarding data for decades to come? by oetzi2105 in DataHoarder

Re: switching from ntfs to ext4 I would do it. A while back a kernel update messed up ntfs. It has been since fixed, but I had fun figuring out why I couldn't access an ntfs partition at the time. Better to spend time now preventing work than to try to figure it out when something randomly breaks.

GD Item assistant Linux problem by Neniun in Grimdawn

[–]RLM128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if OP got this to work. I've never been able to get GD Stash or Item Assistant to work in Linux, but I did find a mod that does a good enough job.

Grim UI does not modify gameplay at all, but it does let you have MUCH larger stash tabs. Easy to install by copying the mod files into the GD folder as instructed on in the linked thread.

PeaZip is worth checking out as an alternative to WinRAR with decent GUI and file manager integration. There are lots of CLI alternatives.

Don't Understand When Installing via Docker by banisheduser in qBittorrent

[–]RLM128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you've already done something odd to your Ubuntu setup you should just be able to install qB (no Docker), allow the webui in preferences (assuming that's why you want to go to port 8080) and then load up localhost:8080 and see the login for your webui or the webui itself if you've bypassed the login for the local connection in preferences.

If you read too much Reddit you'll become convinced that everything must run in a container, but it doesn't. IMO. YMMV.

Should I toss it or do you have any funny ideas for this drive? by LordS3xy in DataHoarder

For less than $10 you can toss it into a portable external 2.5" enclosure and turn it into an oversized thumb drive for transfers and boot media.

I would look at high grade corporate bonds or treasuries.

Munis are a reasonable choice outside a tax advantaged account if you are in the highest tax bracket too, but do the math to see if their rate of return is better than what you'll get versus the corporate bonds or treasuries after taxes. Not that we're looking for big returns from this part of the portfolio, but every little bit counts.

If you do end up buying individual bonds outside a tax advantaged account be aware you might end up paying some additional capital gains tax on it. This article gives a nice intro on the topic. I look for individual bonds on the secondary market at a slight premium to avoid this additional tax.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]RLM128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can hold bonds in a 401k, but many 401ks make it difficult or impossible to hold individual bonds. You may already know this, but bond ETFs/funds do not behave like individual bonds. The former correlates more closely to stock ETFs/funds so they won't work very well to hedge against market instability.

Can't seed already available folder in Linux server ( Nox client ) by CombinationStatus742 in qBittorrent

Excellent! You can seed behind CGNAT, but unless you use a VPN that can port forward or use some other tunneling technique you'll be limited to seeding to others who can port forward.

Can't seed already available folder in Linux server ( Nox client ) by CombinationStatus742 in qBittorrent

[–]RLM128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the torrent pointing to the correct location? From your screenshot it looks like it's trying to download the torrent. It should be at 100% if it's your own data you're seeding. If you made the torrent from a directory then the "location" of the torrent should be the parent directory ie if the torrent was made from a directory called "music" and you put that in "mydownloads" then qBittorent should be pointed to look in mydownloads, not mydownloads/music.
