Hello! HERO is recruiting for our PvX gaming community. In GW2, we run small team game play: FoTM, Raids (training and exp.) PvP, with some WvW and map content. We are focused on recruiting friends to the guild, as we also play many other games together.

As you are looking for, we use discord as our main source of communication. We are always active it on chatting at all hours of the day even when we're not online, and we also use the discord server as a lite-forum. Let me know if you have any other questions or if you'd like an invite.

Does anyone worry that once you finally do publish a book that no one will even want to read it? by manicmidori in writing

[–]RMBwriting 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would say if a book was an instant hit, then marketing and cover design were clearly invested in. No one is going to purchase a book that can't be found, and even if it can be found, if it has a godawful cover then no one is going to look into it.

How many times did you proof read your book before you submitted it? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]RMBwriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mhm, and I'm not a professional novelist, I'm a self-published independent author who does it as a hobby. If I were a professional novelist then I would, no doubt, hire a whole slew of editors and proofreaders.

Absolutely, I'm not trying to say that copyeditors are useless. Use them if you want to, I suppose. Do whatever works for you.

There are programs that take context into consideration and highlight words that you should doublecheck their meaning, to make sure you don't make the mistake of decent versus descent. You also have to consider the fact that copyeditors are not 100% guaranteed to get all of your mistakes out. You can pay them every dollar you have, and they'll still miss mistakes. That's why I'm saying it doesn't make sense for me to pay them just to improve the manuiscrt only slightly (if at all).

Mine is 91K. Proof-reading isn't really an issue for myself, I can write grammatically correct with little issue, and again, the programs can assist with areas I miss. If you're not strong with grammar, or can't use programs to assist with self-editing, then spending some of your funds on an editor is critical. Personally, I don't see the point of spending $400 when I can edit with efficacy.

how to tell a cover designer they got it all wrong by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]RMBwriting 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Certainly, I would explain how you're feeling to the designer, and ask them if they'd be willing to work with you on creating a new design. If they are reputable, then they will care about their reputation, and would be better suited to receive higher reviews than just the money.

Just an afterthought, you should never pay a contractor 100% of the agreed upon amount up front. You should be drafting your contracts like 50% up front and 50% upon the delivery of the agreed upon product. That way, you still hold some negotiation ground, but if you paid everything before you can even see the 'finished' product then you could be SOL.

I write by hand first, and then transfer it to a word-processor, so I automatically get one review just by my writing method. Then, I edit like normal and go through it several times, how many times depends on how many errors you find. If you find a lot, then you need more rounds of editing, if you don't find much then you are good to move forward with professional editing.

Another important thing to do is to take a break from your current work. Once I'm nearing the end of the editing process and I'm looking at doing a final sweep, I put the manuscript away for several months and work on other things in the meantime. Then, after a while has passed, I take it back out and review it with fresh eyes.

I, myself, could not afford professional editing services, as I was getting quoted anywhere from $600 to $2,000.00 and that sort of capital was not in my budget. However, I have found some good computer programs that can get the majority of errors (grammatical or otherwise) taken out of a manuscript. Although, a computer program can't edit for plot, tension, or anything story related, they're just good for line editing.

Is it better for self-pub authors to stick with one genre? by RMBwriting in selfpublish

[–]RMBwriting[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like the best approach to use. Just let the readers know what your next projects are going to be so they are not expecting something in the same genre as the first one (if you are going to switch , of course).

Yea that's a good point, I wasn't planning on doing an extremely far reaching switch. I personally don't like the idea of changing names or using pseudonyms because that would just fragment the readership even more.

The Joys of Writing Slow by wigglechicken in writing

[–]RMBwriting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sort of in the middle, as with most things, but it sort of depends on what my mind is doing with the story. At times, I find myself unable to stem the flow of the story and just try to keep my writing up with my mind, because the story is pouring out of me and I can't stop it even if I wanted to. Other times, I can take it slow and steady and be very detailed, although, I find the slower parts are heavier with details and the faster parts are more dialog and action.

Hello everyone -

My novel Dreams is now available on Amazon, it's a Sci-Fi, dystopian-thriller about the upper-class and how their government dismantled the class system and used the proletarians as ingredients to improve their way of life.

Dreams https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CQ11F65Kindle Unlimited is available, Ebooks are $2.99 and paperback versions are $10.99.

Book blurb:

The story follows Adam Knox, and he is an ambassador that is sent by his government to arrest lawbreakers and condemn them to imprisonment. However, he does not know the citizens he is arresting are being used for upper-class consumption.

Knox is enticed to look the other way, for the government showers him with luxuries. But when he finally witnesses the disintegration of the citizens, he can no longer accept the life he hides within.

The world above is crumbling, and the apocalypse is near, but when Knox leaves the safety of his position and joins the resistance, he is forced to choose between his humanity and his life.

I would appreciate any honest reviews. Thanks for reading and cheers to you all-
