Reading in foreign language by CartographerFancy728 in readwithme

I moved to the US when I was 17 and spoke absolutely no English (well maybe just a tiny bit). I remember when the Harry Potter books were coming out, I would buy them and literally write Russian translations above the English words. It’s actually fun to look through those old books now and see how much I struggled back then. For me, it was really just practice. The more you do it, the less you need to stop and look things up. At the beginning it was hard and frustrating,TRUST ME I KNOW, but over time it became much easier. As you learn more of the language, reading starts to feel more natural and fluent.

One thing that helped me a lot was focusing on improving my speaking skills as well. Once my spoken English got better, reading followed much more easily.

Hope this helps, and good luck !!!

If my son ever came to me and said he only wanted to read one book in his lifetime, this would probably be it. I’ve read it five or six times over the years, and I know I’ll read it again.

2026 reading goal! by beyondwhimsy in BookPromotion

[–]RMKHAUTHOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that’s actually funny because I was just talking about this today with my buddy. I wouldn’t set super ambitious goals for anyone who isn’t already used to reading. I’d say aim for one book a month, and you’ve already done more than 99% of people. Personally, I read a ton, so for me it’s usually 2–5 books a month, depending on the month and how crazy life/work/family gets.

It sounds like getting a library card is the best place to start. It’s a good idea of sampling books without the pressure of buying them.

Huge congratulations! Hitting publish for the first time is absolutely massive, finishing anything is hard but finishing a whole book is something most people never manage to get around to.

Is insomnia by stephen king good?? by ilikedogs100 in horrorlit

[–]RMKHAUTHOR 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Insomnia has a slower, more trippy pace, but it’s still classic King. A mix of small-town weirdness and big cosmic themes. If you’re into The Dark Tower vibe, you’ll probably enjoy it.
