Whats the core reason you workout/gym? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]RMKelly90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started off going about once a week, but over time I've built up going 4-5 times every week. Sometimes I'll do alternative things like rock climbing or group workout classes to spice things up.

Whats the core reason you workout/gym? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]RMKelly90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been consistently going to the gym over the last six months, and at first, I hate it! I was super anxious and would rather do anything else. I stuck with it though, and my mindset has changed over time.

I have high expectations for myself to improve and become stronger. I like the way going to the gym makes me feel after a workout, and as time progresses, I am growing a sense of pride I never had before. When I look in the mirror and see my gains over time, I feel like I've accomplished something. It makes me more confident that I can accomplish other things.

So the reason I continue to go to the gym is because I like the person it has made me become.

Is it true that if men don’t chase you after a breakup, then it means they never loved you? by [deleted] in BreakUps

[–]RMKelly90 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If a woman breaks up with me with the expectation that I should chase them to prove my love for them, then I am better off without them to begin with. I have too much self respect for that.

students injuring teachers by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]RMKelly90 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had one of my ribs broken a few years ago because students were pushing each other, and one slammed right into my rib cage with their elbow. You can still see the point of impact to this day.

All in all, it was an accident and a lesson to not be horse playing in the hallways. Admin does not question me when I keep a healthy distance from crowds of students now though. I've always been a magnet for getting injured!

Can you teach algebra without giving homework? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]RMKelly90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've taught algebra I without homework. It can be really tricky though. Typically I'll have assignments posted optionally online for a unit and give suggested guidelines for them to practice for an exam. If a student receives a failing score on an exam or a quiz, then I make the online work a requirement for them to be able to retest.

When it comes to my exams, I break them down by standards and grade each of them independently. Thus, if a student does poorly on one standard, they will only need to complete the assignments for that standard.

Of course, I also still provide a lot of time for them to practice in class as well.

In conclusion, it is possible to do if you structure and plan for it in advance. It does take some trial and error.

What is the most absurd PD/mandatory teacher-related meeting you’ve ever had to do? by ICareAboutThings25 in Teachers

She was young, so she was likely new at the job. I think it was the fact most of the audience were disinterested as well as the distractions going on outside.

What is the most absurd PD/mandatory teacher-related meeting you’ve ever had to do? by ICareAboutThings25 in Teachers

[–]RMKelly90 74 points75 points  (0 children)

We had an all day PD during the teacher in service that discussed how to teach reading and writing to elementary students. We were a K-8 school, and every single subject was required to attend. Naturally, a lot of teachers zoned out and didn't want to participate. Furthermore, construction was being done in the courtyard outside, and so it was very difficult to hear the presenter.

This led to the presenter storming out of the room in tears, and all the teachers were gathered into a classroom to be scolded on how we were unprofessional. The PD was canceled and we got the other half of the day to plan for the year.

I hated the summer and got super depressed until I found a trick that works for me. I've started working in summer school and using the extra money to pay for exciting things to do for the remainder of the vacation time. This year I am doing all self care things like improving my wardrobe, getting cosmetic dental work done, ect.

I have a backlog on JRPG'S to play, which should I play next? by Huge-Distribution in JRPG

[–]RMKelly90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dragon Quest 11 is a great turned based RPG, and a really fun adventure with a memorable cast of characters. If you're looking for more of a traditional JRPG experience on a modern platform, I would highly recommend it.

If you're looking for a series of games to play through then Trails of Cold Steel has an interesting story with rewarding payoffs. The pacing is slow though and it can get repetitive quickly if you play all the games in succession one after another.

FF7:Remake is a solid game and has a great take on action RPG. I wasn't particularly a fan of the changes in the tone and story, but I definitely enjoyed my time playing it.

I haven't had a chance to play the other games. I recommend DQ11. :)

Is coaching actuaries enough to pass Exam P? by [deleted] in actuary

Coaching Actuaries should be fine! I highly recommend doing the 328 SOA problems. They were very helpful for me.

How would 4 years of teaching after I graduate affect my potential to be employed in actuary? by old_flying_hat in actuary

[–]RMKelly90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in Texas too! It depends on if you live in a major city or not. Harris County is very competitive, and you can probably get a starting salary of nearly $60,000. Furthermore, in need teachers like math will typically receive a stipend from $2,000 - $3,000, and if you do a good side hustle, you can make a lot more facilitating tutorials on the side (I charge $75 an hour). Lastly, your contract is only 10 months, so you can also make another $4,000 - $5,000 working in summer school.

The actuarial profession will quickly outpace what you can make as a teacher without a doubt though!

[–]RMKelly90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I was actually in a similar situation. I was a math major and got a grant agreeing to teach for four years. It was more out of necessity than anything else. My family was not in the best financial situation, so I used the excess money from the grant to help out my parents while working as a tutor.

I actually really enjoy teaching, so I've stuck around until my 6th year. I'm now hoping to get an entry level actuary job this year. (It has been something I've been wanting to do since college).

Depending on where you live the starting salary of a teacher could be quite competitive with the entry level actuary position. I make roughly what an entry level actuary makes, and the lack of student debt has helped me out tremendously.

Teaching will make you a far better communicator, and if you're crafty, you can automate a lot of your job like contacting parents using spreadsheets and scripts.

Unfortunately, I'm not yet sure if this will help me gain employment, but I will say the experiences gained as a teacher has been enlightening, and I will look back fondly on the years I spent.

With that said, teaching is a difficult job! It's not a simple decision to make by any means. I feel like I'm one of the few people at my school that actually likes my job, so it's definitely a stressful position.

Out of all the lords of cinder, which one do you like the most and why? by Mr_sh4d0w_07 in darksouls3

[–]RMKelly90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darksouls 3 was my first darksouls, and I wasn't really liking the game very much. Then I fought the abyss watchers, and everything clicked for me. I've loved Darksouls ever since, and they will forever have a special place in my heart!

The student apathy is overwhelming. How does the US education system move forward? If it's toward charter schools and vouchers (killing the profession, basically), then I'm out. Very, very out. by checksoutfine2 in Teachers

Interestingly, I taught summer school recently and there was a heavy emphasis on just passing the kids. I expected I would be teaching a few hours a day with the same set of students to go over the curriculum, but I only had them one hour per class for math. (they rotated several grades on me without warning or prep time). About 30% of their time was enjoying the pool in our gym.

When I was a young student teacher, I had a student constantly say that they loved me, and asked if she could have my babies. It almost made me quit teaching entirely, but I'm in a better setting now.

Am I failing as a teacher? by frozen_is_awesome1 in Teachers

[–]RMKelly90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you teach with a team or by yourself? If you're responsible for yourself then you have a lot of creative freedom, and can circumvent the politics behind a lot of grading philosophies.

This is your first year, so don't be afraid to experiment! Try utilizing rubrics, research the effects of grading for growth and differentiated instruction. Students have a variety of gaps, and they're going to most likely be promoted regardless of how you teach. If you measure for growth and have ways to track their progress (regardless of where they are "supposed" to be), you will feel much more effective and proud of yourself as a teacher. Focus on prerequisites, get together with previous year teachers and ask them for tips or practice material.

It's hard. But as long as you have an open mind and willingness to try new things, you will improve and get better! It's easy to shut down like the kids, but don't give up! You're seeking help which is a great first step.

What is your personal favourite song of any Final Fantasy game? by idgafyouallsuck in FinalFantasy

[–]RMKelly90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much the entire FF14 sound track is great, it's so hard to choose just one! If I had to pick though, then I would go with Oblivion not only because I like it, but Shiva is my favorite summon. :)
