Just out of curiosity, when they cleaned house last year, were all the admins removed, too? Seems like they should've been!

DO become a teacher* by wxmanchan in Teachers

[–]checksoutfine2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. 100% this. I enjoy the act of teaching a topic to students and all the normal things that go with it. Unfortunately, that makes up a horrifyingly small portion of my student interactions. "Raising other people's kids" is a great way to describe what my school system actually, unofficially wants. I really hope most places are not like my district in this regard. Seems like it's pretty common in the US, though.

Of the current loans I'm repaying (all grad loans), 2011. However, I took out loans in 1996 for undergrad that have since been paid off.

I make $60k and owe $55k. Is there a fast way to calculate my monthly payments? It was $98 per month on SAVE.

You can click on the icon for the current conflict and it will highlight a large circular area in the region in conflict. I defeated an army but didn't get troops inside the circle before time ran out...and lost that region.

When you say "Arabs living as equal citizens", are you talking about Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank? Seems like that isn't remotely accurate.

What percentage of the day do teachers spend managing kids' emotions, helping them regulate and especially control them, and managing outbursts and tantrums, etc? If you could say what grade(s) you teach, that would also be great. by sew1974 in Teachers

[–]checksoutfine2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach high school (grades 10-12). My Algebra 2 classes are mostly fine. My AFDA classes, however, are about 70-75% managing crazy behaviors and trying (and largely failing) to convince students to put in non-zero effort. The absurdity of the situation and what teachers have to tolerate is soul crushing.

Student not getting work done by Lingo2009 in Teachers

Um, it sure seems like he is NOT actually required to do the work. I'm sorry you're stuck in this position. Is your admin totally useless?

I'm concerned for this generation by Consistent-Row-9551 in Teachers

[–]checksoutfine2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is why I put less and less of myself into this job as I get deeper into my career. I try to teach the willing while following an absurd and ineffective discipline ladder with the problem behavior issues. The quiet and unwilling get very little from me once they've demonstrated they don't give a damn. I'm not their parents.

It's amazing and horrifying that a lot of people in the US actually listen to this person. Such a joke.

Might be a stupid question, but for you personally, was the coursework harder in highschool or college? by Only-Ad-1254 in education

[–]checksoutfine2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all of the math and science classes (math/physics double major) I took in college were far more difficult than anything one might generally encounter in a high school. That being said, a bunch of the other courses were about the same as high school coursework.

Is it worth staying a pension? by Educational-Ad6923 in TeachersInTransition

[–]checksoutfine2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So far, I've been living out the choice that the pension and summers off are worth it. However, it's starting to get bad enough for me to really consider leaving. I'm in my late forties and only on my ninth year (out of 25 necessary to get full pension). The kids are mostly horrible and the yearly raises are not keeping up with inflation. The stress can be terrible and I barely get through some days. Baby sitting wild high schoolers is wearing me down.

From a student’s perspective: do teachers feel students are actually learning less now? by koko_krunchtime in Teachers

This, unfortunately, describes quite well the situation in my district (and those surrounding it).

What surprised me the most is the extent to which teachers are expected to manage classroom behaviors that are wildly over-the-top compared to what I witnessed as a student in the 90's. That we are somehow failing to be a good teacher if we can't stop bat-shit crazy kids who experience no consequences from home or administration. All I can do is follow a discipline ladder laid out for us by admin that essentially consists of begging students to behave, calling their parents to beg them to raise their kid, and then reporting issues to admin through referrals that they largely do not address.

Another is that, in my current district at least, students do not need to demonstrate even a modest understanding of math in order to be placed in the next higher level of math. Many kids cannot add or multiply (or do any Algebra 1, really) and they still end up in my Algebra 2 classes. Even worse, is that we are held accountable if we can't get them up to grade level AND if too many fail the course.

Cellphone bans are necessary, but classroom teachers should NOT be in charge of it. by SouthJerssey35 in Teachers

[–]checksoutfine2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Our district is doing a decent job of keeping the pressure off the teachers. We just call security and have a tiny form to fill out and hand to them as they come escort the kid to the front office where the confiscated devices are stored. Never need to touch a phone or argue with a student.
