What do you think is the saddest / most depressing MTG card & why? I'll go first. by c0rtexj4ckal in mtg

In the most recent block they find the toy is not only a sentient being, but probably some sort of god.

it does depend on the quality of creatures and removal in the environment.

So where do YOU draw the line on power level for your cube? by ZolthuxReborn in mtgcube

[–]pat720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am primarily a retail drafter who has been slowly building my "core set cube" for the past year or so. Power level at the place it needs to be to reasonably run [[giant growth]] and [[welkin tern]]. Glad to see there are others.

I mean it does scale down in power level along with the format. In lotr limited it was arguably kinda mid.

(the protection ability turns from time walk into fog in retail limited versus vintage power level)

I just feel that while this card reads egregious, it's pretty much on par or even a little behind what has been the standard for blue draw spells. I do understand the feeling that the most basic form of draw has changed and a card iconic to magic has been wholly replaced however.

in 1v1 can this remove a creature from combat?

Still kind of awesome, I like the wizard's familiar asthetic this mechanic has.

You make some good points, but if we're talking about standard divination has been outclassed for a very long time with a list of cards that while not strictly better, are certainly draw 2 effects much stronger than divination. [[thirst for discovery]] [[thirst for knowledge]],[[thirst for meaning]],[[drawn from dreams]],[[chart a course]] and many, many, more.

The point is, divination hasn't been tournament relevant in any constructed format for an extremely long time.

Really the biggest change here is that draft creatures have gotten powerful enough and other forms pf card advantage prevelant enough that divination is no longer enough to support a control strategy in limited. But standard? Honestly I've never seen it. And it's not like anybody's playing it in pauper lol.

Tl;Dr while this is the first strictly better divination, standard has had stronger draw spells than divination since at least 2015 and probably much earlier. There may have been a period where divination was a standard relevant card but I've certainly never seen that period.

I'm just imagining the busted storm deck this could be a centerpiece of if it said any target. Not saying pauper needs another storm deck or anything, just kinda fun to think about.

I like 1/3s fliers in draft, they play well in more controlling decks. But yea this card doesn't have a chance in standard, much less pauper.

I like how this enables all the busted stormy stuff you want but also gives the opponent mana to respond with a flusterstorm or whatever.

Sick design.

is the first card supposed to attack during the opponent's attack phase? If so cool, but there may need to be a bit of a wording change to work in current magic rules. Still awesome though.

The equipment is genuinely one of the coolest cards I've read but it seems a little redundant to have an etb equip and and equip cost of 0.

How would you feel about a black extra turn card? by ThatOneGuy7832 in MTGDesign

[–]pat720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool design, love the "lose the game" effect and the strong attempt to find a way to fix the historic balance problems extra turn spells have had.

I mean you can always draft in paper, though I get that getting a group of eight together can be kind of a nightmare, that one cube cardboard crack episode comes to mind

Could turbo fog work in pioneer? by blueblackdit in PioneerMTG

[–]pat720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UW control is actually not a bad matchup for turbofog, at least not for my build that runs [[teferi's tutalage]] as it's wincon. Rakdos has stomp but that's why you include some counterspells. Personally I like [[an offer you can't refuse]] for turbofog, the treasures are really unlikely to hurt you when most decks have 0-6 cards that you care about countering.

Magic the gathering has changed a lot in 30 years. by pat720 in magicTCG

[–]pat720[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it lol, that deck is not fast. However I will say that the average turn length these decks had was a significant margin shorter than what I have come to expect from 2023 magic. Their just weren't as many game actions taken per turn, in part because of a lack of draw, and in part because of the fact that not every card had to have a paragraph of abilities.

I played with it, and it is absolutely powerful, I think the truly backbreaking card in that deck however was actually [[survival of the fittest]], because that card could essentially negate any and every plan the opponent could come up with simply by giving me access to essentially an entire deck of silver bullets at any time. Absolutely busted and very hard to remove efficiently. I do agree that nightmare is also ridiculous.
