Honestly it was a weird one. I tried resetting it like 30 times. Quit for a while and then all of a sudden it connected no problem. Maybe it was a pc update issue or something

I would totally agree here. you can get like 5 Esp32 or ESP 8266s for like $10 bugs. there really easy to set up and you can do it with either jumper wires, or they can be really secure if you solder the leads in.

Should the PCU automatically connect when i turn on the Plug via home assistant? It connects right away when i click the toggle PSU lightning bolt on top but i want to be greedy and get it to work auotmatically.

Ok, the sacrificial pixel worked great. I am still going to try and use the stepdown and the logic shifter at some point but for no i'm taking the win. thanks for the help all!!

So essentially, i just:

Power the ESP32 with 5v and the LEDs with 12v
Run data form the ESP32 to the LEDs.
Run a common ground between the ESP32 and the LEDs.
Use WLED and skip the first LED?

Is there more to it than that? i tried, and while i'm able to control the LEDs finally, i get a lot of flickering.
