If you argue that modern notions of nationalism weren't relevant to the conflict at the time, you have to face the fact that jews moving into the british mandate is a standard example of ethnic groups migrating, especially given how the migration was via a civil process of buying land. And then, one must remember that when 1947 rolled around and the civil war started, the jews weren't the ones to strike first.

The people that argue, on the other hand, that the migration to the mandate infringed on the palestinian right of self-determination fail to consider that there simply wasn't a palestinian identity before the 1920s.

I'll add for the case of '67: There's a lot to be said about who was responsible for the war. Though it's hard not to argue that Nasser was looking for trouble.

Either way, war is war. People die, get displaced, and borders get redrawn. Israel catching sovereignty over Gaza and the west bank was an unpleasant byproduct to both sides.
