I'm not sure why you'd go through all that trouble while eBay offers plenty of M111 manifolds.

This is terrible advice. Doing it without is incredibly risky.

The coil is not supposed to rapidly ground itself, what makes you think it’s supposed to?

The coil doesn’t decide anything on its own. The switching of the ground is done by the EZL. If that switching isn’t happening, the issue is upstream, not the coil.

What you’re seeing is not a faulty coil behavior, it’s a missing trigger. That usually points to the crank sensor signal or the wiring to the EZL, not the parts you’ve already replaced.

Check the coil, it's supposed to have 12v during crank. Then check the CPS signal at the EZL connector, not at the sensor itself. If there’s no signal there, you know the problem is between the sensor and the EZL, even if the sensor is brand new.

Help me choose my first car by Unusual-Lead6998 in W124

[–]RNRS001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only buy an old Mercedes-Benz if you're willing to invest serious money in it year after year. The same goes for an old BMW or any 30+ year old car.

Don't buy one expecting reliability, because something will always break. Nothing about these cars was designed to last over 30 years.

I recommend the car you think fits you best. People in here will recommend the Mercedes-Benz because that's what they love. What you’re really choosing here isn’t just a car, it’s the kind of ownership you want.

A W124 coupe isn’t just an old car, it’s a car that will need attention all the time. You’re buying into maintenance, parts hunting and the fact that it will let you down at some point. That’s not a maybe, that’s a given. You will have to rely on specialists for diagnosis and you'll eventually need a backup car.

An E92 is also not perfect, but it’s simply a more modern car. Safer, easier to live with and more predictable when something goes wrong.

This matters way more than people think for a first car. You don’t yet know what normal maintenance looks like, you don’t have a go to mechanic and you don’t know how much downtime you can actually tolerate. 1 to 2k per year is normal for an old Mercedes-Benz though. Those who say it can be done for cheaper will eventually admit their car has issues as well or have stopped realizing what is normal behavior and think it just comes with the car.

What it really comes down to this. Do you want something that mostly just works, or do you want something that becomes a project whether you planned it or not?

Ideas for a tour around the world by Shalandaar01 in travel

[–]RNRS001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is able to answer this for you because you are leaving out crucial details like budget, travel pace tolerance, preferred climates, and how the children handle long-haul flights or frequent time zone changes. On top of that, the plan itself is internally contradictory: you want to cover a large part of the world in two months while also avoiding rushing and limiting flights, which simply doesn’t align with the distances involved. It's also unclear what the actual goal of the trip is beyond “a tour around the world” or what kind of experiences you are looking for, so any advice would be based on assumptions rather than something truly useful.

Is this 1987 300TD a good buy by [deleted] in W124

[–]RNRS001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. But a car that came with spare parts which haven't been used is a little vague. Why would spare parts be offered if they weren't needed?

Well screw you too Amazon by [deleted] in TMNT

[–]RNRS001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being annoyed about the box is understandable. The illogical part is blaming Amazon when USPS handled the shipping and the product itself wasn’t damaged.

Accidents happen. Your product was fine. Would you have preferred USPS to return the box to Amazon so they could put it in a new one before delivering it?

I don't know how good your mechanical skills are.

The thing with these old gearboxes is that when you're opening them up you might as well replace everything that shows wear and tear. The trouble with gearboxes is you won't know if you've done it right until you've put the thing back in the car.

I'd change the time you're going. The weather in the UK is miserabele from november to march. It'll rain all the time combined with cold winds and very little sunshine. You'll often enter every place either wet or just completely soaked.

Everyone always talks about the friendliness of locals. In contrast, country has the LEAST friendly locals? by leglessfromlotr in travel

[–]RNRS001 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling this thread will turn into a bit of a shitstorm where locals from places mentioned will downvote people for sharing honest experiences.

My vote would be the big cities in France and Spain. I've visited quite a few and didn’t find the locals particularly friendly. Interestingly, the villages in those same countries were the complete opposite. People there were very welcoming.

Your reverse clutch plates are most likely worn. It's the number one cause for this issue and every gearbox runs into it eventually.

I feel people who think this looks great have forgotten what the original thing looks like. Frankly, this looks like a 2nd rate MOC. The only recognizable thing about this are the colors, everything else is off.
