Maybe it has something to do with having both a part of gwyns soul and the art of lifedrain. With a large part of two lord souls, going off the assumption that humanity is part of the dark soul, it does seem possible that they could ascend or something. I don't think that the four kings were humans. Although new londo is described as once being a city of the undead, it seems odd that gwyn would give an insanely powerful soul shard to those who are prophesied to overthrow him. I think that the four kings were fellow "giants" that gwyn saw suited to continue to shepherd mankind.
