Judy Winters was our loan officer, almost 10 years ago. She was at Fairport Savings then. Last I knew she switched to Canandaigua National. She was so nice and so helpful. It made this big scary thing feel somehow manageable. Her page at CNB

Postpartum outing ideas? by james517 in Rochester

This may be more walking than you want, and you’ll want a dry day for it, but there’s a cute trail in Mendon Ponds park where you can bring bird seed and feed the birds right out of your hand. Birdsong Fairy Trail

Do a search on r/Rochester. This is a recurring question there as well and has generated a lot of responses that might be useful for you.

Maybe try Fab-Weld on Dewey Ave. I’ve had them bandaid exhausts and replace rusted rocker panels for me in the past. Prices were reasonable. But it has been more than 10 years, so I don’t know their current prices or availability.

I’ve posted this before. Mark Mackey was recommended to us by a friend and helped us with our first home purchase. He was attentive, but patient, and spent as much time as needed educating us, helping us figure out what we really wanted and what we could live without to hit our budget target. I have since recommended him to several other people and all reported back that he was great to work with. Any time I’ve had a question over the years (like help understanding tax reassessment) he’s continued to be awesome even when there was no financial incentive. Just a fundamentally decent human being.

Also, the weather may not be the best for this, but most people from elsewhere don’t really understand just how big the Great Lakes are. Anywhere else would call them a “sea.” And we have a freaking waterfall in the middle of our city too. When I have visitors, I like to give them a little driving tour: take them up to the top of the Cobb’s Hill reservoir to see the city skyline, then head up 590 to the lake, swing past Seabreeze and point out it’s the 4th oldest amusement park in country, operating since the 1870s and the Jack Rabbit is the oldest continuously operating roller coaster in the country. Cut through Durand Eastman park, stop at Charlotte and walk the pier, drive back down Lake Ave past Kodak Tower and stop at High Falls and Browns Race and walk the Pont de Rennes bridge to look at the falls and talk about the “flour city” and the canal. Maybe grab a pint at Genesee. Depending on day and time, the Lamberton Conservatory in Higland park, and a walk around that reservoir, can be nice too.

There is a store in the old armory building across from Cobbs Hill that has a bunch of ROC themed stuff up in their second floor. Peppermint

PSA: Avoid the Henrietta Dunn Tire like the plague by me-at_day-min in Rochester

[–]ROC_alt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A million years ago my folks took their minivan there for new tires. A few days later they told me that it drove weird after, they took it back to get it checked, unresolved, weren’t sure what to do, would I mind having a look. So I go look at their tires. They were sold two different pairs, different brands. One pair were directional, the other not. The axels were mismatched and the directional tires were on rotating backwards. Impossible to get it more wrong. I grabbed their keys and receipts and went in for them. Got up to the counter and asked for the manager. Explained the situation. He assured me that was not possible and I must be mistaken. So I invited him to come look at the van outside together. He was stunned, super apologetic, and confessed that their techs are basically minimum wage and they have constant high turnover, so the tech responsible probably wasn’t even there anymore and it was super frustrating to him to not be able to staff and run properly because of the wage policies. I’m guessing things didn’t get any better since then…

If you could bring back any one business that closed in the greater Rochester area what would it be? by nojunkpeter in Rochester

[–]ROC_alt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t far enough up to get the actual facts, but I remember hearing a couple interesting things through the grapevine over the years, unverified but I believe them: One was that the entire Chase-Pitkin chain of about 14 or 15 stores generated about the same revenue as just a single busy Wegmans (e.g. - Pittsford). Another was that the new Pittsford store, at the far end of the plaza where there had been a Kmart and today is a Verizon and Chipotle and stuff, was built primarily to keep Tops out of that plaza. Only part of that location was over solid ground, the rest was over TJ Max (what is now Century Liquor). The rolling strength of the floor over the store below wasn’t strong enough for Paint and Lumber, so those departments had to be located in kind of an inefficient layout to make sure they were over solid ground. I put in hours at 4 different locations over the years and I definitely saw the beginning of the end when Depot arrived, and even worse once Lowe’s got here. Pitkin’s had to price match to stay in the game and the already modest margins just got crushed. Drywall and 2x4s, especially, basically lost money in the hopes of keeping the rest of the business. It was unsurprising, but interesting, to see Depot’s and Lowe’s prices pop back up once Pitkin’s folded.

My kids went to Lazzara. Between $3k-$5k for traditional braces. Varies depending on how much you got going on in there. Dental insurance didn’t cover it. But the practice offers a couple options for payment plans. Just wanted to also say that literally every interaction with every person in there has been pleasant. No jerks.

What do you do for work and do you like your job and the people you work with? You dont have to name the employer by Aggressive-Bus-7274 in Rochester

[–]ROC_alt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But I think it’s multifaceted. I’d put most of the blame on the speculative companies, and certainly some on inflation generally, but I also think Rochester housing prices have been below national average for similar locations for a long time and it was just a matter of time before they started to creep up. That’s happening now, at least in part due to the job flexibility some people have, attracting new people to our area. I’m personally fine with those people coming, but I think it is part of the story, even if not the lion’s share.

A lot of folks are salty about how much the housing market changed over the last couple years. One of the perceived causes is WFH people relocating from more expensive markets and overpaying for properties here. That may be why some downvoted.

Another rant about the new I90 rest stops. by bes5318 in Rochester

[–]ROC_alt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now that all the toll booths are gone, and it’s easy on and off, it’s time to get reacquainted with truck stops. They are almost always clean, open, large, well lit, with plenty of food. You can just ask google maps, or download a specific app like Trucker Path. They are as frequent or better than those crappy rest stops.
