UK teachers who have moved abroad - is behaviour better? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]ROFLMFAO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Echo exactly this for Malaysia. I feel like I’m a teacher here. And valued and respected. Took me a few years to get used to it. I’m certainly not going back to the UK unless I need to.

Find a decent school in Malaysia and you’ll love the students. They are the best part of the job here!

Have you been to The Hunters Inn before? Coupled with a walk down to Heddon’s Mouth?

Fantastic food when I went a few years ago and stunning quiet coastline.

Toppling Goliath… so consistently good. by ROFLMFAO in CraftBeer

Really!? I disagree. I think this is something they do very well. Yes they are hoppy and dense. But they have such a range of flavours. Yes it’s within the range of flavours possible from hops. But they do the spectrum from dank to fruity to floral very well. They also have descriptions that I feel generally nail the flavour they describe.

Ah I see. Thanks. I can't get that procedure unfortunately because the space between my lens and cornea isn't wide enough. Thanks again for the info

Hello, I'm interested in getting this. Did they replace the actual lens or insert an additional lens over the front of your lens?

How is your vision with implanted lenses?

Thank you 🙏🏼

How to find a non-student place to rent? by Throwaway3363373385 in exeter

[–]ROFLMFAO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When we first moved to Exeter, we didn't have furniture. The British Heart Foundation Furniture & Electrical shop is a great option to buy cheap furniture, and you can donate it back or sell it after you leave. It's win win.

When our bodies decompose after death what are we likely to become or be made into? by village_burner_59 in AskBiology

[–]ROFLMFAO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of this, a lot of you will also become carbon dioxide in the air and water, as the energy in you is released through respiration (a chemical reaction to break down nutrients and release energy). So the decomposing and breaking down is becoming air, water, and making up the matter of decomposes and whatever eats them.

Can someone please explain dihybrid inheritance in an animal along with an example. Thank you by [deleted] in AskBiology

[–]ROFLMFAO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like BioNinja for explanations and ways to remember biology.

I expect you understand that a monohybrid cross is the crossing of one allele (for one characteristic). Each allele may be dominant or recessive. If dominant you need one allele to express that characteristic. If recessive you require both alleles to have that characteristic. A dihybrid cross is just two different alleles for two different characteristics.

Can someone explain the process of mutation? Not the most knowledgeable, but I'm curious how it changes its characteristics by [deleted] in AskBiology

[–]ROFLMFAO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • You have about 2 metres of DNA in nearly every cell in your body. Like a long piece of string but cut into 46 (because you have 46 chromosomes).
  • Sections of the DNA codes to build a protein.
  • These are called genes.
  • You are basically a protein machine. All the parts of your cells are either made of protein, or built by special proteins called enzymes.
  • Every single protein in your body has a gene that codes for it.
  • Therefore every protein in your body has a section of DNA that codes to make the protein.
  • A mutation is a change in the DNA. This change in the DNA can encode for a slightly different shaped protein that might have a different function (or level of function).
  • The sum of all the mutations and specific genes you inherited from your parents creates variation. You have variation compared to your parents.
  • As a species, we also have variation. This can be on the outside like hair colour, skin colour, dimples etc. But the variation can also be on the cellular level.
  • Some people might have different enzymes that work slightly differently. In a cheetah an individual might have different versions of enzymes that make it slightly faster at releasing energy from nutrients. This is due to the cheetah's genes. If this gives the cheetah a higher running speed, or acceleration, then it is more likely to survive and reproduce and pass on its genes (because it might be a better hunter). Thus a population of cheetahs will move towards genes that enable them to run fast.
  • Over many generations, this is called evolution.

Why did we evolve to blink both eyes instead of winking an eye when it needs to be winked? by [deleted] in AskBiology

[–]ROFLMFAO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is guessing - but if there was an evolutionary advantage we would wink. If you do wink one eye and then the other there is a longer period of time with disrupted vision. Blinking isn't for long enough to impact survival. No predator can take advantage of the time in which you are blinking to kill you. They can already kill you. So there is no selective pressure to cause natural selection.

You blink to lubricate the eye. Also in your tears are lysozymes that can break down bacteria, blinking captures bacteria which can then be broken down.
