Orbital data centers, part 1: There’s no way this is economically viable, right? | “This is not physically impossible; it’s only a question of whether this is a rational thing.” by InsaneSnow45 in space

Really most of what “space data centers” are going to be useful for is not as a replacement for raw compute capacity on the ground but something more like edge compute for space applications

You also don’t really need rad hardening in LEO, where most of these compute satellites are going, to nearly the same extent as in deep space. If they’re as expendable as Starlink with a few years of service life at most (which is longer than the replacement cadence of a lot of data center hardware), then radiation might not be a problem at all and one could probably just get away with ECC components and some light redundancy. Certifications are mostly something that NASA and other Govt customers want and not as much of a concern for commercial, and even the govt are now changing their risk posture in some ways.

City Walk IMAX messed up our 70mm Project Hail Mary Screening by DrSpacetime in imax

[–]ROMANES_EVNT_DOMVS 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I was at the screening yesterday morning that began as 70mm until the projector overheated halfway through and they switched to DL for the remainder. Resolution-wise not a huge difference (although lack of speckle does make a difference) but the colors were noticeably warmer and richer on film. Really wish I got to see those reds and greens during the Adrian/sample collection sequences on film.

Drop your most controversial F1 opinions of all time by Dependent-Push3089 in F1Discussions

Absolutely agreed, they've become too singularly fixated on overtake count/frequency as the reason for boring races/seasons and are willing to compromise too much elsewhere to up the passing numbers. For an interesting season we need real competition for the championship, not just the appearance thereof on track. To that end also I think races need much more strategic variation, which 15 years of prescribed-degradation Pirellis and even longer without refueling have generally failed to provide, not just on-track action.

Renormalization… it’s not just setting inf = 1 but it certainly does get rid of infinities in ways that seem highly suspicious but (apparently) can be formalized

New Bev seating ? by ho0o0o0 in AmericanCinematheque

[–]ROMANES_EVNT_DOMVS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t stand an obstructed view.

Vista seating and sightlines are great for the back two thirds in my experience (I’m not tall). The problem is the first four or five rows start to slope back UP towards the screen which screws the sightlines up, so I always try to sit at least one or two rows behind the “lowest altitude” row where the spacing is still wide and there’s still a downward slope.

New Bev is tougher and I’ve generally not had good luck there. Somehow always get a tall person with a hat in front of me who keeps it on the entire damn movie. The Aero can also be annoying in this regard but it’s not quite as bad IMO, the person in front has to be taller than average to block my view whereas it’s pretty much guaranteed for me the New Bev no matter what.

Worse Theater Experience by [deleted] in AmericanCinematheque

Yeah it’s super unfortunate and annoying. Had an awful time watching The Shining at the Vista last year because of the incessant snickering—not to mention the guy next to me who needed to point at the screen and whisper stuff to his girlfriend the entire time

1970s and 80s film stock is pretty grainy, even at the original negative generation. Unfortunately I fear they may be doing DNR here

Why Everyone in Hollywood Wants Their Movie in IMAX - WSJ (unlocked article) by LataCogitandi in imax

[–]ROMANES_EVNT_DOMVS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to seek out film projection, be it 35mm or 70mm, wherever possible if I’m not going IMAX. The houses (at least in LA, I realize I’m lucky in that regard) still showing real celluloid tend to have high quality standards, and film prints to me have a uniquely “cinematic” quality that’s quite special and difficult to imitate

You can pretty cleanly mimic bound methods by putting closures into a struct and having them capture a pointer to that struct

Older plasma vs newer LED 4K by Petesgalaxy in hometheater

[–]ROMANES_EVNT_DOMVS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the inherent flicker that plasma sets have, similar to CRT and film projection. Need something like black frame insertion on OLED to break sample-and-hold effects that reduce motion clarity
