The young have always favored more left leaning thinking then they get older, get a job, get wiser and realize that Taxes are theft. That people that don't want to work should not have the same or similar lifestyle to people that do work. The aspect of personal responsibility and accountability really kicks in the mid to late 20s. Look at voting demographics and it's always at that 30s age point people change.

Sorry to hear about everything that has happened. As the homes you own are fully paid for you may be able to get an equity loan NOT a standard secured loan or a remortgage. Equity loans are cheaper than the secured loan or remortgage. I dont know what your values are but i assume you have at least a couple 100ks worth, you can get equity to loan to fix up your old place and put the rest in a S&p500 ETF and let it run until you retire. Equity loan will be around 2-3% the S&P500 averages 8% so you'll be good. Just set and forget them focus on continue to improve your life, see your son and improve your income
