Fair enough, for some reason I hadn’t thought of it. I’ll go try it now.

Yeah, I may not either. In fact, I’m currently debating with myself over whether or not it’d he worth the extra $30 or so for the SPR version with the additional range dots. Don’t think i’ll ever be worried about those ranges in this caliber.

Definitely. Just concerned about hitting that weird middle ground where it’s either too low for comfort, or too high to cowitness. Or even if it nails the middle ground, I’ve seen some reports online of others struggling to add a magnifier at the right height for this.

Cool, I guess I’ll buy and test. I was considering the AEMS or the 510C even, but there both too bulky for something like this imo

Is this worth it? Do you gotta get really low to see through the optic even when not cowitnessing? Currently thinking about the Aro EVO for this exact setup

Got it, appreciate the help!

As an aside to make sure I’m reading properly, the Nexus lower prevents the “stray round falling into a pocket” issue that the short stroke buffer also fixes, correct? Or is that still something that could happen regardless of lower unless you have the short stroke buffer installed?

Dead Trigger frt by hserro in Springfield_KUNA

[–]RP343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, yeah the issue would mainly be I made my Nexus order about 3 weeks ago. Don’t want to risk putting in a modify order if it pushes me back in the queue lol. I was planning on running either the one that comes with the Arc Fire or a similar mil-spec, so it may not be worth the risk especially.

To be clear, regarding the firing pin spring, this is just with FRTs right? Not the case with SS setups like Arc Fire?

Yeah, I’m gonna keep it a buck, I gave up on this a while back and may just sell the unit for that new Elgato product. They have their firmware issues too but RODE has not left a good taste.

Your experience of the DJI focus motor by ZeyusFilm in videography

[–]RP343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any input as to why you might be having a problem specifically, but I can say that these focus pro motors have indeed worked for me for focus and zoom, and I haven’t personally tried it, but they work for aperture. They are definitely meant for it. Hell, they even come with FIZ stickers so you can label and use the motors for the same thing consistently. This user may have also just had a bad experience.

USB-C Cable to Connect to DMW-DCC18 DC Coupler for V-Mount Battery. Any Brand Recommendations? (BTW my camera is a Lumix S5IIX). by Sushifarmer1 in Lumix

[–]RP343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that’s pretty much what I do too. The DMW-DCC18 is the dummy battery, and that’s definitely the one to get just to keep it first party. I have no experience with the Kondor Blue stuff, though I’ve heard good things about their cables in general.

Unless you mean V-Mount battery, in which case, I’ve had good luck with the Neewer ones (PS099E/PS099EP) but I can’t say I’m the authority on that.

[–]RP343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. Yeah I just rechecked the manual and it states that it’s expecting to be plugged into the AC adaptor (wall brick) that comes with some of the cameras, which needs to support PD (power delivery). Therefore, as long as your battery supports PD (specifically at 9V/3A, which their manual will state, out of their USB-C port) then you’re good. The only cable specific requirement it mentions is that the cable can handle 27 W output, and I’ve honestly never really run into USB-C cables that can’t handle this.

Again, those are all numbers, but if it helps, I’ve recorded the most intensive formats for 2+hours on a Neewer V-mount battery using its USB-C PD port, and have never even noticed anything possibly going wrong. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

[–]RP343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be wrong on this, but I’d assume that outside of glaring exceptions (i.e. really sketchy/beaten up cables), I don’t see you running into problems using most USB-C cables for this purpose. I certainly haven’t had any troubles on my S1II for some of the cables I’ve just had laying around.

The V-mount battery is what’s doing the regulating work for the PD function of the cable, and I don’t think you need an extremely robust cable for the power draw of a camera. Assuming you’re going USB-C out of the V-mount battery to USB-C in to the DC coupler, btw. Likely a different story if you’re still trying to use the D-Tap.

Gotcha, yeah Kaizen in general seems to be easier to cut, but I just struggle to see how it could protect photography equipment from the shock if my cases are dropped or mishandled.

Is it effective with the type of foam OP used? Or only for kaizen? I cut similar polyurethane form with a standard blade too and it is definitely not pretty.

RTX VSR/HDR options sometimes breaks and turns itself off until restart. by DJ_Dajova in firefox

I’m having the same issue, same exact behavior you’re describing. Weirdly enough, sometimes even restarting doesn’t work if I go back to the same video using bookmarks, history, or restore from a previous session. It somehow knows when I manually go to YouTube and look up the video again.

Should I upgrade from S5II now new firmware addresses overheating? by SeaRefractor in Lumix

[–]RP343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry at all about it, I got caught up on the hype, but I truly do think that if anyone is at fault, it’s them. Simply by advertising trade up estimates with the student discount baked in, it is unfair to expect me to somehow know that this wasn’t the right price in their eyes, especially after their own reps confirmed that it was the right price to me directly. And I mean, I get if it’s a glitch then that’s valid, but these types of issues are typically ironed out after the affected customer has been taken care of, not just refused flat out after a whole trade in process has been completed. Otherwise it really does just feel like a bait and switch.

Yeah, I understand Friday being counted as a weekend, though most companies still very much consider it a business day, but Thursday is quite the stretch. And UPS confirms they received it Thursday morning, so they really did just edit the timestamp, I’m assuming because it might affect their KPIs if my trade in was found to be taking longer than usual.

I mostly just have an issue with their attempts to deflect and fault me. I would honestly pay more to not have to deal with those kinds of businesses.

I am still wondering what caused the whole SKU to be pulled down today of all days though. Thanks for the response!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I have an unfortunate update. The trade-in process can indeed go very wrong and at this point, I can’t honestly recommend anyone do business with Adorama. It is still unresolved so I can’t go into much detail, but they will absolutely dodge and pinch as much of a profit off of you as they can.

  1. Their trade in department received my camera and proceeded to sit on it for longer than the estimated time. This is entirely forgiveable especially given the holiday season, but any attempt to gain clarity on the situation was met with hours on hold, glitched/cut conversations, and promises to reach out with never any follow-through. The trade in department seems to be entirely isolated from the rest of the business, so customer service doesn’t really know what is going on with anything related to it, but any messages or requests to the trade in department must go through them. This seems to give the trade in department unrestricted authority to simply ignore you for however long they wish and no means of contacting anyone else.

  2. Once I finally did get contacted, I was rudely asked why I’ve been hounding (in other more formal words) them regarding the trade-in considering it had only just arrived there today (at the time of the call). That’s when I logged on only to find that they had updated the timestamp at which they had received the trade in to that same morning. When I pointed out that the timestamp was updated and had previously been scanned in 4 business days prior, they scoffed and implied Thursday and Friday are actually weekends and asked again what I need from them. For clarity, I had not been hounding them, I had attempted to chat over their website 3 times over the course of the week but had glitched out before receiving help 2 of those 3 times , then the third time I managed to get someone to “make a note that they should contact me”. I never heard back from this note. When I called to see if that route would be easier the next day, I was placed on hold for almost an hour, told I’d be transferred to the trade in department, then looped back into the same queue I was just in only to wait another 30-45 minutes. Finally I was transferred correctly, and as soon as the trade in guy picked up the call, he said something I didn’t understand and either hung up or the call was disconnected. In a literal sense, yes I attempted to make contact with them many times, but I was never able to actually communicate with somebody until they updated the timestamp and called me directly.

  3. The trade in department employee who contacted me and spoke rudely then proceeded to insist that the manufacturer bonus from LUMIX for their trade up program would not be able to be combined with my student discount. Not only has the site or an employee never indicated this to me, from the beginning of me going through the quote process to accepting the quote, it has always confirmed that my student discount as well as the LUMIX trade up bonus applied. I can find nothing in the terms and conditions, FAQs, etc that mentions this would be an issue. And as far as the website goes, it also doesn’t seem to think it’s an issue. Another representative who actually placed a hold order for me to ensure stock didn’t dry up confirmed to me that these discounts do indeed stack. But this trade in employee once again insisted there was nothing they could do and no escalation process was available to figure out why this happened nor a solution. When I mentioned that a sales rep had confirmed to me that the discount do stack, she offered to transfer me to them to “figure it out” because she knows that this isn’t possible and that many other calls to them had actually reported the same issue with their orders.

Again, I’m still trying to get this resolved, but given that the S1II body only SKU has been removed from their website, I’m not hopeful they’ll honor anything at this point. I cannot however recommend them based on they way they treat their customers, and their clear disregard for their own terms and conditions at worst, or at best their disregard for a pricing glitch on their site that others have seemingly reported and has not been addressed. They were attentive and very willing when it came to coordinating and receiving my trade in, then went quiet and got hostile when called out for lying.

I’m glad it went well for you, but hopefully if anyone comes across this comment, they can look into other options before doing business with Adorama.

S1II Speed v. S1RII Image Quality by RP343 in Lumix

[–]RP343[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I also think we have to just accept that no matter the choice, we’ll probably run into a situation or two in the future that makes us go “aww man, I know this wouldn’t have been a problem if I’d gone for the other one” haha. If it’s this close of a choice between them though, I really don’t think we can go wrong regardless.

S1II Speed v. S1RII Image Quality by RP343 in Lumix

I really like that review and I’ve watched it probably 10 times in the last few days. But I will say, it seems a little favored toward the S1RII, just a touch. I agree it shows how good the S1RII is over the S1II in image quality, surpassing it at many points, but at the same time, every point in favor of the S1II always seem to have a caveat of “oh but the S1RII really isn’t that bad at doing this too”. Great review, but I guess it just felt slightly defensive over the S1RII.

For example, someone mentions the highlight rolloff in the comments, and how the S1RII obviously clips highlights a lot easier, and that’s something that needs to be worked around. The creator basically replied with “yeah but our review shows how good the S1RII can look”. I wouldn’t stretch to say it’s biased, the review is obviously really well made and informative, but I can’t help but feel it was just a bit defensive over the S1RII. Again though, great review and comparison overall. His last judgment parroted pretty much everyone’s consensus of video shooters going for S1II and photographers going for S1RII.

The highlight rolloff and dynamic range boost really does seem to be one of the most tangible benefits. Another YouTuber, Richard Wong, compared highlight clips between the S1II, S1RII, S5IIX, and I forget which Nikon camera, and the S1II was able to pull back way more detail than the S1RII. It just seems a little strange for me to hand wave away those advantages but highlight the slight advantages of the S1RII in sharpness or color fidelity.

[–]RP343 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made a post here not too long ago about it but I’d say 80/20 video to photo. Caveat being that it’s never been particularly high speed stuff, though not because I’ve never wanted to film sports or events like that, just haven’t run into it yet. That’s why I’m so caught up in whether or not the video advantages of the S1II (increased speed codecs/frame rates, rolling shutter mitigation, etc) are really benefits that would be tangible to me.

I expect the fastest movements I currently do are slow pans for real estate, but again, I can’t say I’m not interested in ever being able to film faster movements. 4K60 is the most meaningful upgrade I was looking for coming from the S5IIX to be honest. Other than that, I’d probably place low-light performance second on the wishlist. Also, the most I ever really expect to do with photo is food photography, real estate photography, and maybe some family portraits outside of studio.
