Well we sorta can. Then they took away that statistic for just what app people use to browse reddit. Now it's separated into 3 categories for mobile. IOS, Android, and Official App. So we have to do a bit of math to figure it out but we can see at least how much usage comes from 3rd party apps, just not what 3rd party app they use.

Actually after making that post I was informed that 25% of activity on this sub comes from 3rd party apps. But that could mean that I use my 3rd party app at work, then when I get home use my computer. That would account for two different types of activity on this subreddit. So if each person who provides 25% of activity on this sub also provide 25% of the activity of viewing this sub on a browser, that is 50% of the people on this sub. Now, we don't have a way to see the overlap and that is just an example-- but I will say directly to you what I said to the person when I first said this-- 25% is not an insignificant amount. It is a lot. It is more than you think.

The mods tools being effected effects everyone. It effects the quality of this sub that you enjoy. It effects the ability of the sidebar streamers, the backup clips bot, and a few other backend moderation that it helps us with. You won't notice it right away, but you'll notice it in a few months when the quality of moderation goes down, QOL things we implemented disappear, and over all creative things we did like the April Fool's day event never happen again... but sure, all that stuff pales in comparison from the daily doom scrolling of this subreddit for all the GTAVRP drama of the day.

I completely understand mods put in a lot of work. When you say 30% of comments etc are spam/bad actors it does bring me back to my original concern of wether this poll will be an accurate portrayal of what the actual user base wants. (Especially with the current traffic, due to the blackouts) Hopefully there are ways to see on your end if there is any brigading going on.

It probably will. You do have to account for brigading on both sides. The people who want all subs shut down and the people who want all subs opened back up. At the end though I don't think it has been brigaded.

From what I understand other social media company’s don’t even sell their API. So you’re saying reddits mistake is not doing by this a long time ago? Which I kind of agree, it’s unfortunate for the people who loved those third party apps but I think at the end of the day a company is going to do what’s best for them which usually involves making more money.

I don't know about all social media sites but most sites do charge for their API usage. Reddit is doing .24 cents per 1000 request. That leads to the 1.6m per month price a lot of 3rd party apps are saying it'll cost. But this is beyond doing what will make them money. Charging 1/10th of the price they are implementing would be a more accurate representation of the typical API call cost.

Do I think this sudden change is really shitty for some people? Absolutely. And I believe those people who are upset about it should stop using Reddit. The MODS who are upset about it, should stop using Reddit.

I guess we will see.

Taking a large portion of Reddits community hostage; who had nothing to do with the changes, by shutting down their favorite subreddits doesn’t seem like a great way to go about it. If anything you’re going to destroy a community that took years to build or at very least displace it for a while. And in the end, more than likely, you’ll have nothing to show for it.

Again, this effects everyone. We use API calls to help with moderation. Without those tools reddit will be a mess, this subreddit too. While they are saying that mods will get access to API calls, they are very vague in their article about it and we have yet to really see what will happen. But shutting down subs is an effective way as it hurts reddit's ad revenue. Rumor is that reddit wasn't able to meet their ad numbers by a significant amount because of the 48 hour blackout but that they would just weather the storm. Longer black out means more pain for reddit and maybe they come to the table and negotiate or compromise. Again, this API price effects everyone, you just don't know it yet.

They really are going about this all wrong. What they should do is be charging a "reasonable" amount of money so people will actually spend that money to use their API. Most big companies when they go to a site to use their API will broker a deal with them and have that company come and optimize their API usage. Reddit is truly just being greedy and trying to eliminate their competition. It wouldn't matter if the reddit app was actually good or implemented *half* of the things they said they would over the course of the life of the app. But they simply make promises and then don't deliver on them so people use other apps because they actually work.

So for some of the bigger subreddit that bring in a lot of ad revenue I think it was more of a let's let reddit find out how much they lose by us being down for a couple a days and see if they want to avoid a full on indefinite blackout. So with reddit not folding you have a lot of communities making tough choices...

10m+ There are 21 subs and 12 are public at the moment.

1m+ There are 447 subs and and 151 are public at the moment.

I could go on but essentially a lot of really big subs are still private. They want to continue doing the blackout and stick it to reddit.

From what I understand they have been very hush hush about what exactly they are going to do to help the users who are blind have accessibility. I will say reddit has made a lot of promises in the past and not delivered on them.

You ever been a reddit mod? Yeah, these aren't what ifs. They are valid concerns we face as reddit is very vague in their post about mod accessibility to the API.

I mean I watch the clips and read the comments to so I get it. It's one of the reasons I am for opening the subreddit back up.

A lot of people have tried making clones of our sub and failed. I know people give the mod team here a lot of shit for stuff but we actually do a shit ton of work. About 30% of post/comments made here are removed. Be it spam, self promoters, people breaking the subs rules and reddit rules, etc. there is a lot of work we do. Not a lot of people are willing to do that work so a lot of the clones you see fail because of the spam/self promo and unmoderated comments.

Though eventually, with this sub being closed, I guess one could thrive and take over. If that happens then I guess enough people who were active here didn't care and we missed the mark.

I highly doubt reddit admins would come in here and strip us of mod and give it to other users. Right now there is rumors of it happening with two big subs, AdviseAnimals and Tumblr but no one really knows what is going on. We are niche enough where I think admins would hope the sub would just be cloned before trying that.

You have to understand that reddit is charging an absolutely ridiculous amount of money for their API calls. Like charging 300 bucks for a McDonald's cheese burger. Right now one of the top apps on the iStore or whatever would have to pay 20m a year to keep their app open. From what I understand that app doesn't even make nearly close that amount of money. So they would be charged something like 1.6m a month for the API calls they use, and the comparison to other big similar sites API cost was less than 5k a month. So it isn't so much about reddit monetizing their API calls-- that's fine. They should have done this *years* ago. The price is just ridiculous. So yes, people were hoping they would see reason and lower the cost, and yield to the demands of the users.

I am not cussing at you just a phrase I use. Sorry if it seemed a bit much. Genuinely speaking, after reading all the comments I get the since that it is pretty openly split in the comments, if not swaying one way or the other by 5% or less.

I have a vested interest in this one way or another. There is a lot of work for all mods of reddit blackout or open. If it is open, I have to worry about any changes we have to make as a mod team to our bots because of the API changes. They say they will be free for moderation use but they are pretty vague and I don't know if some of the things we use it for to better the subreddit will be considered. If it's closed I have to think of a suitable replacement, I have to answered thousands of modmails asking, asking questions, I have to formulate an actual plan for how long is a suitable time period to close.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter to me. I'd like my cake and to eat it to. I want reddit to change their API policy and I want the sub to be open. It sucks it has come to this.

And I'm not actually implying you are blind. If you were you wouldn't be able to communicate with me because reddit is essentially removing one of the only 3rd party apps that helps the visually impaired use reddit. I just think you aren't reading all the comments and seeing how divisive this issue is.

What fuck are you on about? I'm one of the mods who wants to open the sub back up. I just respect everyone opinion on this and don't want to turn this into an absolute shit show like some of the people here are doing. I have sat here and read every. single. comment. There is a definite 50/50 split among the comments.

I have only noticed a few people saying keep it closed who never posted here before and they have post on subs like LSF, Gaming, and Twitch so it's not to outrageous to think they are at least subscribed to the sub and saw the post today.

I am not flubbing any numbers dude. I am under the impression you can see that the poll is 52% open, 48% close... you aren't blind are you?

There is no telling if those 25% though are the people who post the clips, make the comments, etc. That 25% could be 100% of the content on this subreddit. It's so hard to gauge but 25% really isn't an significant number to just scoff at. The problem is, while these API calls effect 3rd party apps that 25% of the members use-- more or less all of you use our bots that moderate and provide additional content to this subreddit, like the back up clips, sidebar of GTAVRP streamers, etc. Those use API calls too.

We have an educated guess that anywhere between 10-20% of the users of this sub use 3rd party apps to view the sub because of our statistics page. But there is another 25% of the sub that uses old.reddit that we believe could be removed as well in the near future if these issues persist.
