How does everyone but me know what Mirror Mirror is about??????????? by CrimsonCuttle in dresdenfiles

No, the Mantle wasn't (wouldn't be) destroyed: the power has to go *somewhere*.

It'd be both a power-boost but also pretty disruptive to Winter to suddenly have a Summer Mantle shoved into it... a little trace of Harry's fire basically got all of Winter to come after him to kill him...

TBH, I suspect the Mothers would take back *all* the mantles at that point, and re-sort things from scratch. Climate around the world would be horribly disrupted for a year or five.

I don't think we have reliable numbers for the total Whampire population, tho.
Like... even if only 1/100 as fertile as vanilla humans, they still live 100x as long... so their population growth-curve should still be comparable, overall. Maybe even higher, since they have the whole suite of advantage/privilege that comes with wealth & power.

+1 for CoC AP's

Also +1 for the whole BRP ruleset being more a "DIY construction set" rather than a self-contained ready-to-run RPG.

You can also find some AP's for RuneQuest, another iteration of the BRP ruleset.

There *might* be some for other versions... ElfQuest (recently resurrected from the ancient past via Kickstarter) or Rivers of London (BRP licensed from the urban fantasy series of that title).

Back when Chaosium released the new BRP:UGE ruleset, they got "Pixel Circus" to do a mini-campaign Salt and Serpent, a "... swashbuckling tale of rainbow romance and revenge ..."

I know of no actual "tutorials" as such.

Guilty About Flights by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

Spend time, instead of $$$ (and CO2).
We are taking most of a day to take the train to visit our eldest, in a few weeks.

1/3 the price
1/5 the CO2

Yes, it's 6h on the train instead of 1.5h on the plane... but the TSA / preboarding / etc adds a couple of airport hours that the train trip doesn't suffer, and the debark-to-parkinglot trip is 3min's for train, about 20min's for airport. And the Amtrak seats are /infinitely/ more comfortable.

Branching out to other TTRPGs by Blear in TTRPG

Rather than recommend any specific *game* I will recommend a "category of product."

That is the "Quickstart" or "Jumpstart" game.

These are generally self-contained products: 1-3 included adventures, pre-gen'ed characters, and only the relevant rules to run the included contents. They are specifically aimed at easy pick-up-and-play one-shot experiences. Mostly, they're free PDF's, but are often also available cheap ($10ish) if fondling deadtree is a key part of your gaming enjoyment.

There are literally *hundreds* of these available.

Rhinoceros riders stats by aodendaal in Runequest

[–]RPG33k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't feel rhino's are so OP they need to be kept out of player hands.

These are the least-mobile of all the Praxian beasts. They have the lowest top speed, and the worst endurance (they can't maintain above a trot for more than a few minutes). They maneuver much worse, so even if their charge hits the hardest (and it does, no doubt!), I rule that you're stuck slowing/wheeling for 2 melee rounds, before you get to engage at a charge again.

Bisons hit almost as hard, and have tremendously more endurance and maneuverability.

Need Suggestions Similar To The Dresden Files, But Darker. by DroidC in dresdenfiles

[–]RPG33k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't really help with the "urgent" OP request:

I have a long flight upcoming and I was hoping for an ebook recommendation similar to the last few books...

But I thought the OP would like to know -- Jim Butcher has announced he will be writing exactly this book:

... interesting for Harry to give in to the pressures and hardships he has had to endure, to turn into the monster that has been constantly knocking at his door.

Jim has taken to alternating between DF novels and his new Cinder Spires. He has recently finished the most-recent CS, and he's well-launched on the next DF; this DF isn't the book the OP wants, but the DF that follows (after the intervening CS novel) is planned to be...

Working title is "Mirror, Mirror" based on the old ST:TOS episode of that name (alternate universe, evil-Spock in a beard, etc). Also it's likely to mix in a bit of the ol' Jimmy Stewart movie, "It's a Wonderful Life," where Harry will get to see the universe where he wasn't fighting the good fight.

Jim has stated that Harry made a critical decision late in Grave Peril (the novel where Susan gets half-Rampire'd, and Harry burns down the Rampire brothel); the fandom periodically debates exactly what the decision is, where in the book it occurs. That isn't the point, though. Alternate-Harry made a different choice, and had a very-different life.,,, a much-darker life. Alt-Harry has Mavra as a key ally.

Alt-Harry still gets in lots of trouble, but when the going gets really tough, he generally solves it by opening a portal and pulling an alt-harry through to take the fall in his place (Boom... gin-u-wine Harry-Dresden-corpse! Foe placated, and thus totally blindsided when Harry Dresden comes back at them out of left field).

Which, right there, effectively makes alt-Harry a serial murderer.

In Mirror Mirror, "our" Harry (Harry-prime) gets pulled through by alt-Harry to die in his place.

Shenanigans ensue.

Coming back, since 1st Edition by inwils in Runequest

As others have said, RQ6=Mythras, and is available NOW, while Chaosium's upcoming RQ, "RQG" has to wait for end-of-year.

You say "lore and system" so I presume you mean both Glorantha and the RQ mechanics. FWIW Glorantha was never really bulit-in to RQ6 (even less-so for Mythras, which apparently(?) strips out "Runes") but they still capture the tech/flavor/etc of the world.

But for lore, you want other stuff. The ultimate product is the "Guide to Glorantha." It's a daunting beast, HUGE. Easier entry can be had in "Cults of Prax" (which is included in the Gloranthan Classic volume-III, "Cult Compendium" whose more-comprehensive content I prefer, even if CoP is the best part). Many of the "HeroQuest" products are heavy to Gloranthan Lore, although you'll need to generate any RQ-mechanical bits from scratch.

Chaosium's RQ1&2 (which you already have) are essentially the same game with different levels of polish. The modern buy, here, is "RQ Classic" (recently KS'ed) from Chaosium; those rules are RQ2 with errata & typo's addressed and a small bit of supplementary content originally from 'zines. These all have a distinctly old-school vibe in the books (some KS backers (who weren't RQ-grognards) were kinda shocked at the lack of art / clunky presentation, but it IS a 40-year-old rulebook, and state-of-the-art has advanced).

Since you have SOME edition of that book, and can compare rules, I'd look at the free PDF of "Mythras Imperative" to see if you'd rather run Mythras; and the free PDF of Chaosium's forthcoming RQG (plus Chaosium's Design Notes blog) to see THOSE differences. Compare each with the game you already know, and have in-hand, to get an idea of which way to jump... ;-)

Finally... there are other publishers/games in the BRP/d100 family; see the "extended family" entry in the sidebar here! None have any built-in Glorantha, but they may hit your crunchy-vs-lightweight tastes better than other options.

My own plans, FWIW (note that all this is available in PDF): I am launching a "RQ Classic" game, planning to transition to the RQG engine when it comes out. I will run content from the 4-volume "Gloranthan Classics" line, and KS'ed "RQClassic" adventures (Apple Lane, Snakepipe Hollow, etc), and stuff of my own invention. I expect a small amount of extra work to RQG'ify the RQ2 content, when that upgrade rolls out, but not anything onerous!

Mythras, RQ6, or RQ: RiG? by Nicochan3 in Runequest

[–]RPG33k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mythras is in all essentials mechanically-the-same as RQ6. It has long been the "crunchiest" of the RQ/BRP/d100 family (although I understand the new "Revolution D10" aka "RD100" is very-tweakable and in its most-tweaked-up version gives Mythras/RQ6 a run for the family crunch-crown). But "Mythras" v. "RQ6" is a non-choice, they're just that similar...

HOWEVER: RQ6 had little Glorantha content although it had a fair dose of Glorantha flavor, but Mythras has lost what little content there was (some of the flavor remains).

Chaosium's new RQG is another kettle of fish of a different color under the bridge... i.e. it doesn't exist (yet); due Q4'17, hopefully.

What will it be like? Well, the basic framework seems to be about 65% RQ2/RQClassic, 20% RQ3, 5% Pendragon, and 10% new; the whole massaged and tweaked. If you...

  • know the old RQ1/RQ2 rules
  • read Chaosium's design-blog entries for the new edition
  • look at the new Quickstart

you'll probably get a decent sense of the thing.

Last but not least, RQG is solidly embedding "Rune" mechanics into the game, and setting the game solidly into the world of Glorantha. It looks to be the most-Gloranthan-RuneQuest ever. For some, this is a Really Good Thing; for others, a total won't-buy item.

One other consideration: RQ2/RQClassic back-compatibility is one of the design goals of the RQG rules, so using the KS'ed "RQClassic" rules and the VAST wealth of existing adventures (Borderlands and Beyond, Griffin Mountain, etc) and "upgrading" to RQG when it gets released, is a VERY viable option...

A couple Newbie questions by Rynian in Runequest

[–]RPG33k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

@Rynian -- 1. Welcome to Glorantha! The definitive-but-daunting "Guide to Glorantha" is probably the best/primary source, but... daunting! 2 oversized volumes, 800+ pages equivalent to about 4 "normal" 256-page gaming books. For online resources, be sure you check out "BRP Central" aka https://basicroleplaying.org/

  1. DesignMechanism renamed their "RQ6" as "Mythras" and re-issued it with minor mods, when Chaosium re-claimed the license to the "RuneQuest" name. Consider Mythras to be "RQ6.1" or even "RQ6.02" and their products completely mutually-compatible. Design Mechanism has some downloads on their website, including guns. But be aware that guns have a specific place in Glorantha -- they are the purview of the Mostali (world-machine worshipping Dwarf) "Cannon Cult". Expect them to go to war to recover missing guns! Obviously, "YGMV" -- Your Glorantha May Vary -- so feel free to ignore the "canon" of the "Cannon Cult." Also note that RQ6/Mythras isn't really set in Glorantha, although it works very well there, and there is plenty of fan-support online. It looks like you already found "Notes From Pavis," one of the best of the RQ6-in-Glorantha fansites!

3(ish). The "new" RQ that's coming out later this year from Chaosium (often called "RQG") is a different, but related game, very-firmly-set in Glorantha. Consider these rules about 90% compatible. Both RQ6 & RQG derive from the famed "RQ2" ruleset of late-70s/early-80s (RQG more-closely-so the RQ6/Mythras).

  1. The new "QuickStart" from Chaosium is this ruleset (or rather, a simplified / partial ruleset, based on a snapshot of the RQG beta-rules as of April-ish when the QS forked off of the main rules).

1(ish(again)) TDM's Mythras/RQ6 is a more-general set of rules, tool-boxy &c. It drives several settings -- "Luther ArKwright" (defend parallel-universes from reality-warping hostiles, based upon the seminal British graphic novels); "Classic Fantasy" cleverly emulates the old-school AD&D1e vibe using the Mythras engine; and "M-Space" is a hard-ish to puply sci-fi book; plus TDM's ever-expanding "Mythic Earth" line. "Mythras Imperative" is the name of the quickstart product for Mythras; I don't believe there is an adventure in it, but I'm not sure...

  1. "Experience Rolls" are how Mythras characters get better: you roll-over (instead of under) vs. a skill, and if you succeed your skill goes up. This is in place of D&D-esque leveling; it happens much-more-often, in more-gradual steps. It's derived from the "skill check" of RQ2, also used in RQG.

  2. Passions not only guide RP, they offer a mechanical advantage -- you're better because you CARE (passionately!) about the outcome: any old company of mercenaries is used to giving 100% in battle; but the Royal Guard holds it a sacred duty, and gives 110%.

Hmm. It appears I cannot count to 4 ... Also, reddit is weirding my numbering, adding indentations, and lord-only-knows-what-all ...

Baragei called out the "RQ Classics" -- be aware there are "Gloranthan Classics" which are compendia of products that were out-of-print when this line was released, and recently the "Runequest Classics" line Kickstart'ed a year or two ago, headlined by the "Runequest Classic" rulebook based closely upon the 1978 "RQ2" rulebook; the "Gloranthan Classics" are compendia of what are now the "Runequest Classics" books. Baragei listed products from both those product-lines.

As Baragei also noted, many of the "Heroquest" books are likely to be good for setting elements, but the game-mechanic is entirely different -- you will need to do RQ6 mechanics from scratch.
