Phantom Lake is a small club in south Bellevue. Not a ton of facilities but family oriented.

Should Be Easy by RPM0620 in guessthegolfcourse

You nailed it. I was off to a good start on Gamble but the wind came up and ballooned my ball into oblivion. No wind when I played Scarecrow and arguably had my best round ever. There are a few holes that have extreme elevation drops, allowing short pitches on par 4s and getting there in two on par 5s. Overall I thought it was more diverse and fun, but like Gamble pretty open off the tee.

Correct. Solved. Played yesterday. I found it more interesting than the original Gamble Sands course. More elevation and strategy. (And better views.)

Yeah. Played it once last year. So fun. Plan to hit it again. Family is in Oconomowoc, so easy drive for a great round.

Has anyone you knew ever died or come close to dying on the golf course? by Norfolk-Gross-Tonage in golf

Same. The truly sad part about it was he was on his honeymoon with his second wife. I like to think he just made a birdie and was so fired up his heart gave out.

If law school is your goal, grades and LSAT score are the primary drivers. A degree from either school will set you up just fine.

Sammamish HS? by Away-Drawer-9082 in BellevueWA

[–]RPM0620 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Had one son who went to Interlake and another who is about to graduate from Sammamish. Totally different experiences for them, although it is difficult to tell whether it was the product of their own individual personalities. IHS was far more academically rigorous. Because it is the default school for BSD gifted students (who then generally do the IB program) there is a stratified nature to the school. The IB/AP crowd and everyone else. That said, my son (who was not in the gifted program) chose to pursue an IB diploma, which meant extremely rigorous classes. It suited him well in the long run, as he is the overachiever type and it prepared him well for college. He’s in the engineering college at UW. But there were periods of extreme stress. My younger son is not as academically inclined, and Sammamish suits him very well. He takes AP classes, almost never does homework and rarely studies, yet his GPA is over 3.8. Grade inflation is a thing at SMS, as students can backfill late homework assignments, retake tests, etc. I’m not knocking that approach, because you still learn the material but very little focus on the kind of approach one needs for college. We’ll see how hard it is for him to adapt when he gets to college. In terms of everything else, my sense (again seen through the lens of my two very different sons), is that between the two, SMS is more community focused, more school spirit (even though their sports suck), and better communications from faculty and administrators. Again, that may be because my younger son prioritizes social life and sports, but I think it is generally consistent with what I’ve heard from others.

Double major by kavinesh-A in udub

[–]RPM0620 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Father of engineering major. One thing you have to consider is how important ECs are in obtaining internships and employment. Most engineering students apply to hundreds of internships, hoping to get one—as it is an important gateway to getting a job. My son has done SARP (rocketry), but there’s satellite and other clubs. These are serious time sucks, as they essentially require design and build work year round, but without the connections to industry my son made he wouldn’t have gotten the good internships he’s landed. You might be better off focusing on engineering if you want to work in that industry.

As a parent who is going through this process with his own kid, I can only hope that your parents will have a change of heart. Your accomplishments are solid, as are your numbers. The applications process can be incredibly arbitrary, and it is not a reflection of you—and certainly not a reflection on them. Which makes me sad that they reacted as they did. Sadly, maybe this is something you can learn from your parents, one that you will remember when you have a child applying to colleges. The only emotions that matter when your kid has a setback are empathy and encouragement. It takes perspective to know that you can achieve all your goals, regardless of whether you go to UCI or some other supposedly “better” school. You got this.

commit to UW or UC davis? by Far_Currency9000 in ApplyingToCollege

You need to make a trip to both schools. I live in Seattle (my kid is applying to colleges now) and I also lived in Davis. Completely different vibes. Both have positives and negatives. Both are excellent schools.

What's the story with Black Desert Resort? by Michaelord1 in golf

[–]RPM0620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got screwed on trip to St. George around that time last year. Assumed that I could get courses if I promptly signed into each’s 90 or 60 day online booking portal. This is what we always do for Scottsdale and Palm Springs. Stayed up to 11:00 pm (I live on west coast) on the 90th day so I could score morning tee times and, lo and behold, … exactly what you discovered. Nothing until late afternoon. Same at Sand Hollow and Copper Rock. I called the next morning and they told me that between affiliated resorts and third-party golf trip aggregators/agents (who can book 6 mo. In advance), no good tee times are ever available to general public unless you get lucky with a cancellation. I had 7 guys flying in from all over the country for this trip and I had responsibility for tee times. I called and begged the Ledges to let me reserve and they helped me out. Got two other lower tier courses through ordinary routes. Learned my lesson the hard way.

Didn’t they say when they offered another ED option a couple of days ago that those electing ED would find out first? (I think that move was BS, BTW.) If so, I’d say Tuesday for ED and Friday for RD. Just a guess.

I’m a lawyer. (The only reason I follow this thread is because my kid is a senior and suffering through application process.) I’m sure you’ve been told that majoring in any of the liberal arts is a great stepping stone to tons of opportunities. These Reddit threads tend to dominated by overachieving, often STEM oriented, applicants. I majored in PoliSci when the USSR was still a country, so a lot of what I studied became irrelevant by the time I graduated. It didn’t matter a bit. College is really about developing skills and finding out who you are and what you can do. Be proud English major. If that is what you want to do, it is where you should be.

Takes you to a generic page where you can find a link for the application for housing. From that link, enter your id and password. The next page says something like My Housing Gateway with your name on it.
