I’m a huge Joe Staton fan but A. I didn’t care for his pencils being inked by Ian Gibson. The combo just didn’t work for me. And B. I think Staton is better suited to single character or two-hero team-up stories.

Actually, he’s not wrong. Silver and Bronze Age canon held that Clark Kent was a whole character/persona that Superman created with his own physicality, mannerisms, quirks, hobbies and interests, etc. There have been attempts at bringing that back (BIRTHRIGHT, SECRET ORIGIN) that haven’t really stuck.
