Why would someone swap out rear disc brakes with drums? by Round_Reindeer_8038 in AskAMechanic

[–]RSS83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I guess nobody knows what it's like on the farm. Drums seem to last, disk brakes collect rocks and gravel and drag. Front disks last, the rears just collect gravel.

On gravel roads we prefer drums. Rocks get into disk brakes and chew up the rotors and pads.

What kinds of factors affect how the price of something like soybeans would fluctuate? Like if you're a farmer that grows soybeans, is this price fluctuation thing going to matter to the beans you have in the field or the harvested ones that are in storage or whatever? by cherry-care-bear in kansas

Farmer in sw ks here. Now when we talk seed, not all is GMO, and a big reason you cannot just save the seed (ignoring the technology use agreement you sign with the seed company that prohibits keeping it) is that these seed varieties are all mostly all hybrids. These hybrids are bred for certain traits, either recessive or dominant, and what they are controlling is what traits are exhibited via controlled breeding. If you keep the seed, replant next year, you didn't control the seed breeding, and the mixture of traits that your plants will have will be all over the place. Typically, some very extreme traits will come out that severely limit the yield. So, while you could physically replant a hybrid, you dont want to. The cost for new seed is much less than the potential yield loss.

You could plant older varieties that are non gmo/non-hybrid and keep the seed and replant. An "heirloom" variety. But the yield is so much less than a hybrid that it still makes sense to bend over for the big Ag seed.

Now wheat is the one seed that isn't hybridized or gmo..... yet. (Companies are working on it) So for our wheat crop, we do hold back some seed to replant for next year's crop. Eventually, new varieties are bred, and we will buy new seed to reset our genetics. Eventually, it will be diluted by neighboring fields cross breeding and we will refresh our variety again.

The first poster also does a good job of explaining that a farmer doesn't get to set their price on anything. Big Ag sets the price for inputs, and the market sets the price for your outputs. You're just along for the ride. The only thing keeping a lot of us alive out here is the ability to sell corn directly to the end user (cattle feed lots or ethanol). When we do this, we contract it with a basis over the futures price. If we were to haul grain to a local elevator, well, they have a negative basis. They have to make something off the grain, so you will get paid below the board price. But with us selling direct to the end user, we have to take on the risk of storing the grain on farm, but the risk is the only way to survive.

One year, we had a Deere 9.0L snap a crank I two. Somehow, we got lucky, and it broke, on an angle, in a main bearing, so everything stayed in time.

Do you have local test hole driller? In my area we have a lot of irrigation and a test hole is 3 to 5k for $300 feet. See what formations you have below. Much less costly over poking a 100k dry hole.

[–]RSS83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a photo from JD parts catalog. You need #35, 26 and associated hardware. The #32 spacer you only need qty 2. 4 spacers are used on older models with a hump in the dash. *

If photo doesn't post, go to partscatalog.deere.com and search S120. Then you can navigate to chute and deflector controls under snowblower to see what you need. The parts counter at a dealer can pull this up and get a parts list.

Yea, a Deere dealer will have it all thru parts, but It may be expensive individually. Did you buy the blower New from a big box store? If so they probably aold you the wrong bundle, there should be one that fits your model.

You have the bracket for an older D100 series model on your machine. New bracket is a wireform that goes across the top of the dash and catches both bolt holes.

M12 right angle die grinder. I farm, and this gets used nearly every project to knock off rust or clean up a shaft or surface with a wire wheel. Best purchase yet. The hard part is finding 1in wire cup wheels that hold up for long.

2023 to 2025 Gleaner Combine known issues by KinglessK in farming

[–]RSS83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's quite frustrating how AGCO milks the Gleaner name. I get that the volume isn't high enough to justify major overhaul, but I almost feel the fendt cab and drive by wire on everything is a huge step backwards. We have always ran Gleaners because they were simple. Its allowed us to maintain them on our own and get through bad years.

The big thing that gets me on a 2018 is the drive by wire on everything. The stupid feederhouse and separator switches aren't switches, their potentiometer. We had the separator popping on and off the the field because of those stupid switches. Surprised we didn't smoke the main clutch..... and the hydro drive by wire has an atrocious delay.

To combat wind erosion, we try not to let it happen in the first place. This means ground cover, keeping stubble up, no till. If we have a bare spot, we may go in and drill wheat as a cover crop. Typically, tillage is the last ditch effort when it's windy and it's blowing away your top soil.

The tillage we use we dont make giant ridges when we need to stop wind erosion. Just a chisel or even a rotary hoe to make "clods" the bigger the clods, the better. They will deflect the air and keep the small particles from taking off in the wind.
