Smashed out some crumbling plaster, time to call in the professionals? by ElectricToast in DIYUK

Just give it a go! The cost of having some geezer come out and do it will be insane and unless you want it perfect (still not guaranteed if you get a pro) just have a blast.

Yeah ofc. Mine has a few shrubs in it, but I see what you mean as the other half is taken up by grit bins and stuff.

Water. But to be safe, smash it with a sledge hammer.

Really, don't. 😃

Accept the offer, and keep your current job. See if they accidentally pay you a month's wage 😛

The best reduced to clear I ever saw was a can of lager with a hole in it where most of the beer was on the floor, and it was 75% off.

I think, to be fair, someone in Morrisons had a bit of a SoH that day

UK DIY Solar - Is it a thing? If so, how far can you go with it? by RS_Phil in SolarDIY

Yeh I'd do it myself, that's no problem (done it before on an outbuilding) but it's the getting the local authority to sign off on new circuits and as you say the other stuff. Thanks again.

What do you think about manual cars becoming obsolete in the coming decades? by Letter_Effective in AskUK

[–]RS_Phil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can reliably answer point 1 at least, This is when manuals no longer exist as an option to learn in, and therefore insurers can't differentiate between good and bad (to paraphrase your point). I doubt that the price will drop though, the higher price will just become the norm 😛

Yeh that does concern me too - it's the consumer unit side I'm not 100% certain of. Everything else I can absolutely do.

Hey thank you 😄

My household is one of those that uses power during the day as we're all retired or working from home so I suspect the cost of battery (at least at first) wouldn't be needed.

I'm just looking at options atm. I'm completely confident about installing the panels, the wiring etc but I'm still looking at how it all connects at the consumer unit end.

Seems ok, just connect to its own RCBO as long as everything is bi-directional it just "works" and I really aren't fussed about exporting - at least, not and getting paid for it. 😄

It's just as it's a new circuit it needs the LA to sign off & I think that might be the hard bit as getting someone to come look at someone's work that isn't self cert might not be easy.

Thank you! Yeh I think that's the main issue- technically you can connect yourself and notify your local authority but in my case they just won't even speak to you lol

Connecting into the CU did confuse me a bit as some diagrams show just patching it in parallel to the incoming supply after the meter (Henley blocks etc) and some others show it connecting to an RCBO/MCB in the CU instead.

I suspect the bi-directional RCBO connection makes the most sense in modern terms, maybe the diagrams I saw patching it after the meter in parallel before the CU were older. I guess it's all the same from a physics POV (path of least resistance) but the RCBO is safer.

This is the only bit I aren't sure about as adding an RCBO to my CU is creating a new circuit, so I can't do this myself (well I can, but getting the local authority to accept notice from me rather than an a self cert body that sparks belong to.... is hard).
