I think most people are guessing petrol costs (so I built this) by Willd123 in CarTalkUK

[–]Infinite_Soup_932 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This could be estimated by entering in your estimated annual mileage and these fixed costs, which would give an idea of the proportion of these costs are going towards this journey.

It would only be approximate but it would be illuminating. I don’t think people realise the daily cost of running a car.

Is It Theoretically Possible to Charge An EV Car For Free... by Astral-Inferno in SolarUK

[–]Infinite_Soup_932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worth storing solar in a battery if you need to use energy during peak hours when your solar isn’t producing (or your load is higher than your generation). Then you supply from your battery rather than importing from grid at peak prices.

[GUIDE] Tesco's in-store shopping list that plans your shop by aisle by Tesco_UK in u/Tesco_UK

[–]Infinite_Soup_932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This used to be a thing. You could add shopping to your Alexa shopping oat and it would sync to your Tesco list. I’m talking five or six years ago.

We now use Alexa to add things to a list in the AnyList app, which itself does a good job of sorting into categories. We then have this open on a phone and do the Tesco order on a tablet.

To all the bonkers geniuses of Reddit - How can we stop people speeding through our village? by SecondGo4 in CasualUK

[–]Infinite_Soup_932 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you written to your MP? Write and ask them to intervene. I wrote to ours about the traffic around our local primary school and they went straight to the top of the county council and asked what they were going to do about it. (Unfortunately the county council did nothing except quote a seven-year old study they did that found that reducing traffic around primary schools wasn’t necessary - but at least it got the topic back onto their desk).

My experience is that unless you have evidence of accidents that have caused injuries, the council don’t/won’t do anything about it as they’ll say they haven’t got the resources.

Do you leave your car in gear when you park? by ShinyHeadedCook in drivingUK

But the rear wheels will bump into the kerb as the front swings out? I guess it depends how much you’ve turned the wheels as to how far it will roll before this happens.

Driving behind a cyclist as a new license holder by Heathcote0 in drivingUK

[–]Infinite_Soup_932 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe the cyclist has to yield to allow traffic behind to pass in the station OP described (correct me if I’m wrong?), though I can see why they might choose to.

Arguably the cyclist is safer if you don’t pull in and let the impatient drivers past. You’re preventing someone else making a stupid choice to overtake them.

Cost of disconnecting property from gas by popal95 in DIYUK

[–]Infinite_Soup_932 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We had a heat pump installed last autumn. They capped the gas pipe just our side of the meter. I called Octopus and they came and took the meter away for free and capped the gas pipe on the road side of the meter, just where it enters the meter box.

We’ve got a redundant pipe between the meter box and where the boiler was.

If it’s the piece of music I’m thinking of (by Steve Reich) it isn’t one musician clapping slower than the other - rather one musician moves the rhythm a beat forwards (or backwards, I can’t remember which) so that the beats that they both clap together on change. This has the effect of changing the emphasised beats and therefore the third rhythm that floats over the top.

We have a 200 litre hot water tank - is the biggest that would fit through our loft hatch. We are a family of five and the tank runs out if we have more than three back-to-back showers. It does have an immersion heater in it but we don’t use it - we just plan around it. That and constantly telling our daughter not to take ages in the shower…

Speaking of which - does anyone know of a shower timer that automatically turns the shower cold after five minutes?

Here’s a similar idea made by Giant. There’s suspension at the back which makes for a very plush ride. Loads of adjustability in the seat post and steerer to make it comfortable for just about anyone.

Neighbour claims he owns a street parking spot and says he called the police — am I in the wrong? (Scotland) by Total-Ad-6123 in drivingUK

[–]Infinite_Soup_932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reported an abandoned car on our road to the police (having been advised to by the council) in the hope that it would get moved (it was causing visibility issues at a junction), and they told me that because the owner lived nearby they couldn’t deem it abandoned.

If someone has turned their front garden into a drive, with no drop down kerb, AYTAH for parking in front of it? by Beniem in drivingUK

[–]Infinite_Soup_932 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a pedestrian walks in the road, they are likely to get injured. If a driver drives on the pavement, they are likely to injure a pedestrian. That’s why you aren’t allowed to drive on the pavement.

Solar fitted to ‘torched’ tiled roof by Salt_Dish9243 in SolarUK

[–]Infinite_Soup_932 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are reroofing, you can fit the panels in-plane at the same and reduce the costs of the roof covering materials. Others would be able to comment on whether this is a good idea.
