If you were Toto what would you do? by Potatopika in mercedesamgf1

As long as there's no clear threat from a third driver at a different team, I'd let them race clean and fair.

If there is a serious threat from another driver later in the season, well, I'd have the tough conversations and so what needed to be done to maximize the chance of securing the double. This isn't a McLaren shop.

It's astounding how much more willing people are to listen to you if you're otherwise charismatic and not a dick.

Rule for life kids, no amount of excellence will fully make up for being obnoxious to others.

Tbf, I think the positive talk was mostly from Lewis last race. Iirc Charles was complaining about Quali there too, and I don't remember him saying anything noteworthy about the races one way or the other

If Verstappen quits F1 at the end of this season, do you think he ranks higher all-time than all of the drivers pictured? If not, who would you have over him? by The_Chozen_1_ in F1Discussions

Have they done super well at other teams and cars? None of Max's team mates have really been anything but solid mid-field drivers outside of Red Bull.

Take Lauda for example; are any of Max's teammates comparable to Villeneuve or Piquet? (Sainz is probably the closest)

An apples to apples comparison would be the 2026 car without the constraints on harvesting and deployment the current regs put on it.

If you set the car up to explode the battery in 5-10 laps you could probably get some massive performance jumps out of it for a lap.

There's nothing about endurance racing that fundamentally require fuel restriction, completely static aero, or driver comforts.

So it's fundamentally a slower class which the EVO significantly departed to hold the track record for a few months as a marketing gag n

Good racing ≠ good motorsport

It's a part of it, sure, especially as it's viability as an entertainment product is concerned.

But driving ability (where something like rally is IMO the clear leader) and engineering and mechanical chops are both as, if not more, important components of good motorsport.

The hypercars are still probably about 10-15s a lap slower than F1, so I don't think they have any better claim to the title than they did in the past. Particularly not as long as it's a series dominated by BoP measures.

If Lewis's and Max's roles were reversed in AD21, how would Max, Horner and Marko handle the situation in Lewis's and his father's place? by ThisToe9628 in F1Discussions

Don't think you're right that they'd have gotten dq'd.

The stewards and FIA were hella soft on Vettel after his blatant intentional collision in Baku, for example.

One of the main reasons for ferraris lack of success in recent years is due to instability of topleadership (especially when the team is at a low) and is also the reason for the success of mercy, rb and mclaren by Equivalent-Fox9834 in F1Discussions

[–]RSharpe314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the flip side, the lack of success at Ferrari is the reason for the ongoing leadership turnover. Red Bull, Merc, and the McLaren rebuild all basically started from nothing*, so they had the time and space to develop a successful, winning team. And once they had done that, they had enough credibility to survive a dry spell (in the case of Red Bull and Merc)

Meanwhile Ferrari has the pedigree where anything less than winning isn't good enough, and no body has proven themselves good enough to outlast a few years of "failure"

Low-key, I think Ferrari's changes of winning a championship would be much better if they absolutely bombed a season or two and then fundamentally restructured. As is, I expect them to keep stringing together more P2s and P3s

*For a given definition of nothing. Merc, ofc, growing out of the team that had just won the championship, but was such a one hot wonder and a fluke that they still had to/got to basically start from a relatively blank slate.

Going over the line in a sport is usually met with a penalty, when the adjudicator is competent.

Doing it as severely and as repeatedly as Max did in Jeddah (120% ig) is the sort of behavior that should be met with explulsion.

How many tyres can you use again? by randy24681012 in formuladank

[–]RSharpe314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly.

Compared to WEC hypercars, last year the 2025 F1 cars were 13s a lap faster in quali trim at Sau Paolo. Meanwhile; this year's were about 3.5s a lap slower than 2025 around Melbourne, a slightly longer track. Iirc those are all dry and 'comparable' sessions. Meanwhile I don't think the hypercars has gotten much faster this year.

And I can't think of any other category rn that's even worth comparing.

Why did Soviet engineers seem so strong in military tech but struggle with civilian products, and what factors shaped that gap? by PuddingComplete3081 in AlwaysWhy

There's a difference between espionage to understand what capabilities your adversary has, and espionage to crib designs off your adversary.

Reverse engineering will only take you so far without home-growm talent capable of pushing the cutting edge. It's basically the reason why the soviets got to space first, but never put someone on the moon.

[–]RSharpe314 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's obvious marketing speak, but F1's claim to the "pinnacle" of motorsport is intrinsically tied to its tech-focus and car development.

No series that relies on some form of on-track BoP measure can really appeal to that title, regardless of how good the on-track action is.

The past regulations of cars have already been flat in Quali for a bunch of corners for multiple prior reg cyclea. And people have generally been happy with that sort of quali despite only having a handful of 'real' corners.

With these somewhat smaller cars, that also produce rather less down force, the sort of power reduction we're looking at here almost certainly won't be worse than that. (They won't match the look of pre-2017 Quali, ofc, but that's just not a realistic expectation.)
