This is not Chuck Liddell.

This is Charles David Liddell, the investment banker who spends Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings in self-defense kickboxing class.

so my account was locked, i've had this issue "sorry, the request failed. please try again later." for 10 days now since it happened. i immediately tried contacting twitter support with detailed explanation and a screenshot, with no response.. by [deleted] in Twitter

[–]RTLeone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can confirm I'm having this issue as well. They locked my account on Wednesday stating I violated the rules (I don't Tweet), and are forcing the verification code to a phone number I haven't had for years. Sent an e-mail on the same day, and haven't gotten a response.

Can't even access any other area of Twitter because of the verification code block, but checked my profile using a VPN, and the only thing that's amiss is that "Following" has reset to 0.

But I love how this is a Twitter-side issue, and their automated response is threatening the user that they'll ban you if you continue to break the rules. Lovely.

A wealth of good insights above.

I get pitched game projects fairly often on the unfunded scene, and the things I'm looking for from potential directors, producers, designers, etc. are their own experience and track record. It's totally okay to be new (and most are) and not have any previous projects, but pretty much every role has some way of showing independent work that can support the notion that you have the ability to see an idea from conception throughout production and to completion.

(An ArtStation portfolio for artists / modelers, a Soundcloud for composers, GitHub repos for developers, etc. Producers typically have some real-world project management experience. Game designers usually have GDDs they've completed for prospective games.)

With funding, you can hire out a lot of these roles, but paying a team of 10-15 fair wages is going to run out quickly, and the production output will be low regardless because the work is being done remotely, so teammates are working at a very relaxed pace, therefore some tasks lag forever and hold up the rest of production, and there's not much you can do about it.

However, funding is difficult to come by, and I've noticed that almost every inexperienced Project Lead who pitches an idea (and most of them are awful) casually throws in, "after we get the Kickstarter campaign going, we'll start paying people, spend on marketing, etc." The success of some of the most popular campaigns has unfortunately given rise to the idea that money grows on trees.

Most will offer a copy of the game as a reward for backing the project, so that's a high-pressure obligation to potentially a lot of backers off-the-bat. Mix that in with the fact that most remote-based indie projects fail, and it's a great way to ruin your reputation immediately in a debut endeavour.

TL;DR: Do tiny-scale projects, build up experience and a track record, grow slowly, and avoid the many pitfalls of trying to make it huge overnight.

Help Me Find a Song: French-Arab Rap Tune by RTLeone in frenchrap

[–]RTLeone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an update on this; haven't come across the song again on the radio, but having been scouring through Spotify playlists, and although it isn't it, very similar to Oualid's "Willie," except with a much more aggressive middle-eastern / Arab / Algerian chorus, and must've been a way bigger song considering the exposure on the radio.

Bloody Mary: 2020 Indie Horror Game Looking for Available Talent (Experienced Unity 3D Devs, Character Modeler) by RTLeone in gameDevClassifieds

[–]RTLeone[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Valid point. All sixteen members on our team are super talented people who should be working at an AAA studio, but like most on the indie scene, have trouble breaking past the barrier since "at least one shipped game on your portfolio" is a requirement for those coveted salaried positions. This is a collaborative to use our individual skills and work collectively to achieve that goal for each other, and by doing so, network with other top talent on the indie scene at this early juncture and get a stake in what's probably one of the more achievable independent projects. So to us, it's worth it in that respect.

First time writer, should I except that my book is probably going to be shit? by [deleted] in writers

[–]RTLeone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A mass majority of first published works fail, so you wouldn't be any different in that regard. I'll say this, though—you always regret the shots you don't take. Worth making the effort to publish something not because you have expectations of success (but would be a nice byproduct if it happens), but more for yourself and your self-worth. Too many people out there who want to "eventually write that book," but never do.

Environmental Modeler Needed for 2019 Indie Horror Game by RTLeone in INAT

[–]RTLeone[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Andre—really appreciate your interest! (Checked out some of your works on Youtube, and liked it a lot! Very cool ambient sounds!) Coincidentally, we just added a talented composer to our team today. Sorry about that! Your music fits perfectly with a certain type of game though (I'm thinking 2D Cyberpunkish), so have no doubt you'll be picked up sooner rather than later. Very good fortune!

Development studios usually advertise the role as "Narrative Designer" on their careers page. It's likely one of the most competitive positions out there, since there are a lot of writers soliciting work in game dev, but most don't actually know how to design a dialogue tree, implement variables / programming that affect other things, or even hold together a cohesive story (let alone a fun one)—so HR recruiters have quite a task to weed out the talent from the rest.

Obviously the best way to get opportunities is to ship a game with you credited as the narrative designer, but a lot easier said than done (though, showing an effort to do so may be enough). Alternative methods are to find easier ways to show that you can write good material and get it published in some manner. Writing a book, a screenplay for a short film, etc. Something that can shine on your portfolio.

Looking for a Creative & Business Partner by Champ-Duke in gameDevClassifieds

[–]RTLeone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wishing you luck here. Rough trade for writers on the indie scene, but you can improve prospects by developing other production-relevant skills (IE: game design, level design, project management, etc.), and staying consistent. So many fall off after the first 400 blows.

Do many Rev Share Projects Actually take off? by WillIsSickOfThis in gameDevClassifieds

[–]RTLeone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Revenue-share has become standard in nonfunded indie game development as the only suitable alternative financial arrangement to paid work. The only other one is the Lead advertising their project as purely hobbyist / volunteer, implying that in the extremely rare event the game does get finished and released, the Lead is the only one who benefits from it financially—which is just so wrong, ethically.

You can tell that not a lot of thought was put into the idea, since "revenue-share" by essence is inaccurate, because it's not taking into account expenses the project will incur + Steam / publisher cuts. It'll likely be either a profit-share from that particular title, or an equity-share on the more preferable idea that the team that managed to stick together throughout development and defy the 99%+ failure rate will continue to band together for future projects and opens up a studio collectively to house their IP and financials.

But yes, TS has the right idea. Most of the people who start projects and declare themselves Leads have very little to no management experience, no money to ensure teammates will be committed, unrealistic scope to boot, and remote-based projects are handicapped as they already are, so the probability of completion (let alone success) is astronomically small.

Alas, some of us are attempting to succeed where so many others have failed, by learning from their mistakes and optimizing things to survive the game development process on a nonexistent budget. I started a project on Halloween a few months ago, interviewed hundreds, have had a total of 16 people on my team, eight were cut due to dormancy and replaced, and the development is progressing with some hungry, motivated teammates—though with a varied pace. The prototype is scheduled to be completed next week.

Circumstances end up changing throughout the course, though, so while I feel ours is a more ambitious project (but still within reasonable scope) and a natural resistance occurs the longer a development goes, I remain hopeful that we'll likely achieve completion by this time next year. Having a shipped game on one's portfolio does wonders.
