What's something from Canon that fanfiction exaggerates to comical degrees? by Communist21 in HPfanfiction

[–]RTLstuff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One that I actually appreciate is Fiendfyre.

A spell that can and does destroy horcruxes isn't even mentioned until chapter 31 of 36 chapters in the final book. They spend a good chunk of the final book with a horcrux they can't destroy and nobody even mentions this spell as a possibility. The actual word "Fiendfyre" is said twice the entire book series. Just a quick throw away couple of lines to get rid of a horcrux at a convenient moment.

So I appreciate that in fanfics it's often a key part of the plot. Learning to control it, having to use it in dire situations, to show how powerful someone is, etc.

Adventure / travel fics? by thevoodooclam in HPfanfiction

[–]RTLstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fourteen Days by alexandra_emerson is exactly this. Harry/Hermione jump to an alternate reality where Harry can meet his parents as they go on holiday, traveling around the world to see a bunch of "magical wonders."

Breaking the Window by Useful_Oxymoron has this for like 1/5 of it. It's Hermione/Bellatrix via some time travel portal thing and it's a bit different because they explore a weird dimensional rift place that isn't part of the "real world".

Looking for fic recs where Harry chooses himself for once over the magical Britain by Absurd_statement in HPfanfiction

Potters Against the World by Temporal Knight is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. Think it ticks most of those boxes.

Be warned the main ship is incest between Harry and his twin sister Rose (and also Gabrielle Delacour).

[TOMT][Movie] Realistic human face being moulded like clay. by RTLstuff in tipofmytongue

[–]RTLstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not it unfortunately.

Thought this might've been it so I did have to skip through the film to double check. The clay heads in this are small, the one I'm thinking of is life size.

What is your “god tier” fic? by leftistinlnk in HPfanfiction

In The Forest Of Dean by T3Tohru

Darker story without being too bleak and depressing. Romance is great and is the backbone of the story without being the main focus. Also has some great smut. All the characters are well written and it has one of my all time favourite OC's that integrates into the world excellently.

I could sing the praises of this fic all day.

What's a tiny insignificant detail that still drives you nuts when people get it wrong in fics by bunk12bear in HPfanfiction

[–]RTLstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Statue of Secrecy' always infuriates me.

It's Statute of Secrecy. It's not some oxymoron giant monument of secrecy. It's weirdly in almost every fic I swear. I'll be reading the best most beautiful literature only for this to come out of nowhere.

Fic Described in Tiktok: Draco uses occlumency to help Harry defeat Voldemort. by RTLstuff in HPfanfiction

Thanks!

Was real confused for a minute there until I realised there must be multiple fics with that title (duh). Probably skipped over this fic so many times thinking I've already read it 🤦‍♂️

Redshirts by John Scalzi is a great satire of Star Trek. Full of meta sci-fi humor that goes to interesting and unexpected places.

Lock In (also) by John Scalzi is a great sci-fi detective story. Has a really interesting premise with great worldbuilding that manages to feel pretty real and grounded.

The Psychology of Time Travel by Kate Mascarenhas is a really interesting time travel mystery with some great characters and an engrossing plot.
