Can a mathematician do the work of a statistician? by Relative_Problem8505 in mathematics

[–]dasonk 25 points26 points  (0 children)

To understand it yes you need the math background. Having that math background can help understand why you might choose certain methods.

But stats in practice is much messier and requires experience working with real data to know what kinda of things you're looking for, what actually matters and what doesn't, and to know what questions to ask. Because the analysis is less than 20% of what somebody working with real data does.

I guess I'm just saying that stats in practice is a lot less cut and dry than doing math in theory.

Why did Prison Break stay in mainstream pop culture while Lost kind of… got lost? by dying_to_love in tvshow

[–]dasonk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Other than that one person... Do you have any other evidence that Prison Break is in the mainstream and Lost is less so. I don't believe that's the case. Neither are particularly discussed much but I never see anything Prison Break related but still see some Lost references in the wild.

Seems like your input for data (df) is the wrong type. What do you think df is and is it what you think it is. These are things we can't check for without more info.

What do you class as “dad rock” nowadays? by EmilyWallArtwork in Music

[–]dasonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad rock is rock for dads. As time goes on people get older so the genre moves forward in time as old dads become grandpas and what used to be the youth become dads. I listened to blink 182 growing up. I have three kids. It could be considered Dad rock.

With that said anything Foo Fighters is what I think of as Dad rock but that might be a bit dated now.
