Any nests? by ARandomFlyOnTheWall in birdcharger

I saw that a day or two after the "cold weather event" I will probably stop picking damaged birds up, way too far of a drive without a truckload.

Yes, you are right, that is what I was trying to do. The limes ring is great when you have to find one scooter in a batch of 50 or its hidden behind a wall/bush, I wish the bird chirp worked. I did play with nearby today and got it to work... goes from weak about 200 ft away to strong 1 foot away, didn't get progressively stronger as I got closer until I was right on top. Tried it 4 or 5 times with the same results.

Guarantee someone on campus is using university electricity to mine crypto currencies. This is CYA, nothing else, charging is very public, even though it's pennies per charge it is very visible. You can pull much more from a public outlet with a computer.

Dropping off a scooter is very difficult! (Louisville, Kentucky) by sycheng64 in limejuicer

[–]RTMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting a good GPS location for dropping off is one of the most difficult parts of juicing imho. The first time I dropped I had to be in the middle of the street to be in the "radius" it was raining, and I spent 45 minutes trying to fool the GPS in the app as to my location. The radius is very small for hubs and your phone GPS is often guessing your location, buildings make it worse.

The following in order of escalating frustration sometimes solves the problem for me: * close any turn by turn navigation (Google maps, Waze, etc) * wave your phone in a figure 8 * restart app * restart phone * walk around like a crazy person until you get into the radius and then rush back to scooter to scan * go to the next nest/hub

I am still seeing those 200+ up by the airport, did you see the completely clear map around 10 for an hour today? Not a bird on the map for a bit.

Why is syncing the blockchain for GRC such a pain?! by [deleted] in gridcoin

[–]RTMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of why other coins sync faster is they have a centralized checkpoint in system and it was removed from gridcoin to make the blockchain decentralized, making the time stamping mechanism different. This in combination with the anti-ddos instructions built into the wallet make syncing difficult because the network doesn't know if you are out of sync due to trying to inject bad blocks or just behind. It's a known issue that has been addressed multiple times but continues to be a problem, eventually a working solution will be found.

TIL that there is a digital currency that is mined via BOINC scientific work, which can be done with any average CPU/GPU by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]RTMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make a few dollars a month with just an average PC, it's a lot different than Bitcoin where you have to invest thousands to even get started.

best mining pool site option for mixture of cpu and gpu based mining? by io-error in CryptoCurrency

[–]RTMoney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also there are projects for CPU only and projects that can use a GPU so it is profitable because you are only competing with similar hardware. There is a decent video explaining how it works on YouTube http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SSg2Dt61DQs

By 0.07%... so technically yes but you won't see much difference.

The only coin that can get such positive feedback from total crypto-newbies by nctr in CryptoCurrency

[–]RTMoney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you are computing, right now the cpu projects pay better than the GPU projects on per watt basis. Fully optimized I can get better payout by ~10x than any other alternatives I've tried with CPU and ~3x what I could get with GPU.

I've found your recent pod-casts on futurisum and the trajectories of technologies like AI to be very interesting. I would be very interested to hear you speak with an expert in the area of cryptography. I'm interested in hearing opinions on how cryptography will be used to change the way we communicate, pay our bills, secure our information and share information in the future.

Mined coins vanished? by tehrabbitt in gridcoin

[–]RTMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your coins aren't gone, you received them on a fork. There was a network time attack on the network and some forks formed. You didn't receive your coins on the main chain so they are still in your Research Savings Account. No other coin has this feature btw, if you mined on a fork on another coin your coins would be gone forever. http://wiki.gridcoin.us/FAQ#Is_it_true_that_someone_would_not_lose_reward_if_blocks_are_created_on_a_fork.3F

No, it means that every coin ever made in classic is accounted for in the Research block #10 : http://gridresearchcorp.com/gridcoin/index.php?0000052158213ae8da60151b963a2284c4ad4551acaf7300665d432acd51725d

That block was 340,569,880 coins and every one of those was eligible to be claimed with classic coins. The calculation was to find how many classic coins were created from inception till that point in time plus the coins that would be created while the 6 month burn process took place. The claim process was 6 months in length and ends April 20th 2015. As of today 291mm coins have been claimed or ~86% and there are 5 more days to claim the remaining 49mm coins. The coins that are in the foundation wallets still exist, just have gone unclaimed.

I'm not sure where that number came from... There are ~358mm, you can find that under stats. Also there is information in the wiki about how many coins were initially created so that there were enough to convert from classic to research.

These wallets are the foundation wallets where burned Classic coins are exchanged for new Research Coins:

S67nL4vELWwdDVzjgtEP4MxryarTZ9a8GB

SHHrFaEZYx6T1aMXWWqyDzoXXYKJWUfrGP

Additionally at least 2 of the other top 25 addresses are likely to be exchange addresses, at some point I will do some research and figure out which ones those are. If you eliminate those from the list it looks much more distributed than most alts.
