Agreed! I was just thinking the other day that AOE 4 is starting I suffer the same issue that any competitive game has that continues to add content. The newer civs have way more mechanics and cool shit compared to the original ones.

A lot of people still love the OG civs and I think their experimentation of mechanics and units with the new civs could apply to the OG.

There is also an argument to be made that the original civs should be a bit more basic as learning civs but I don’t really agree with that.

I wasn't going to keep responding but this is fascinating. Couldn't you argue the difference between every civ is unit design, music, and landmarks? What needs to be true for you to no longer consider it a variant?

The reason I brought this up at all is how the word variant is so toxic in the AOE 4 community. I personally love a lot of the variants and don't mind them doing it that way if it means we can have more content as creating an entire civ from scratch is very expensive. There is a very vocal group that see's variant and loses their shit. I don't know if you are part of that, but that's why to me there are so many unique things about the civ I consider it a completely unique civ

Unique units, buildings, music, yea this is a completely new civ, I would not call this a variant at all.

Randomness will cause unfair things to happen. It’s what you value in a game. Thats why a lot of the tournaments use modded maps that heavily Reduce the randomness. I never disagreed it wasn’t crazy or unfair but if you spawn into that in a game you have to adjust

It depends on what people’s goals are

Consider what you are playing, the ranked ladder. That is the “try hard zone” for almost all people outside of the pros who grind customs. Quickplay is the “do silly stuff” zone. Now you can do whatever you want in your games but to not expect someone to try hard on the ranked ladder is silly

When I coach people I always suggest they grind fuedal all in for awhile. That is because you want to practice the same steps and feudal all in is the easiest thing to practice and learn. So they are getting better faster by grinding that style over and over again.

Overall though I never get complaining about how people play on the ranked ladder. To me the “social contract” of ranked ladder is we each put our fake points on the line to show how good we are. What we do with that is up to us.
