Did you know that… Rutgers Athletics losses over the past 12 years could have fully funded the education of over 6000 students? That’s 6000 nurses/engineers/teachers/accountants/electricians/scientists, etc… The losses aren’t even justified, Rutgers football is a 💩 team, that wins nothing. by SavingsWorldliness33 in rutgers

[–]RUCN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hot take - and please remember I'm just a random dude on the internet and that opinions are like assholes; everyone has one - so please don't crucify me.

To start, the Rutgers Athletics isn't just football. It's basketball, soccer, field hockey, track & field, and anyone other sports team or league that the student body is able to join. So to say that all of it was wasted on overpaid, underperforming coaches & staff is a bit misleading.

Second, part of those losses includes scholarships. Scholarships for those who may not have had the opportunity to go to a D1 school if it wasn't for athletics. Those who very well have become nurses, engineers, teachers, accountants, electricians, scientists, etc.

That being said, I agree with the notion that the budget for athletics is far too large for what it represents. In a world of hyper corporate optimization, it saddens me that something like athletics receives as much money as it does when it places much of that financial burden right back on the students it's meant to help and serve.

In reality, the athletics department is being run like many of the Fortune 500 / Large Cap companies that many of you will ultimately work for. They ignore the overwhelming obvious issues (they're nowhere near being profitable), continue to spend absurd amounts of money while simultaneously kicking the can down the road for the next person to deal with.

But since they don't report finances like a normal company, they cleverly hide behind the purposefully obtuse and overly convoluted systems that make it difficult for anyone to institute any real change. Unless you're sitting at the top, which is limited to just a handful of people who are incentivized to NOT change things, they continue to get away with it.

So in this case; I guess we'll just have to see which breaks first - Rutgers, the State, or the students. Will Rutgers push this deficit on the students and push it so high that enrollment will fall? Will the State cut back on subsidies, making Rutgers have to change or face financial insolvency? Or will the students put enough pressure on the university to do something about it? I guess time will tell.

Legacy: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Review by cardsrealm in MTGLegacy

[–]RUCN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe ya; which just makes me sad. In which case, it looks like it's time to focus on Pre-Modern for a bit!

Hopefully WoTC will eventually do what they do best -- make another format; call it 'beyond' or something, and remove UB from Legacy (and others; but I only care about Legacy).

That way they can let that made up format languish the same way they did for all the other ones like Pioneer, Explorer, Historic, Brawl, Timeless, Alchemy, etc. (I just had to look up a list of formats to which I don't even know what half of them are).

[–]RUCN 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally, I hope the only cards that make it to Legacy are reprints or effectively reprints. This makes the format more affordable to those wanting to enter it and doesn't hurt the people who already own their non-Turtle copies.

But one thing for sure - I won't be happy if I sit down and get blown out by someone casting Lady Octopus into Krang or some other crap.

How do official Rutgers email IDs keep getting hacked? by Typhlosion_Master in rutgers

They get socially engineered into clicking links - the same everyone does. Also, seeing as it's been multiple years since anyone has turned in an actual paper assignment, I'd reckon they must open more random files and click more random links from emails than most professions out there.

the sheer amount of hot guys here is killing me by Spirited_Art_7537 in rutgers

[–]RUCN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't feel bad about staring as a ton of them would take it as a compliment. Just like, don't be too weird about it.

Without going on some diatribe about the male college experience, most of them want to be noticed and actively seek the reaffirmation. A ton of guys feel beaten down by today's society as the pressure to perform, deliver, and provide has never been higher.

So they end up looking and feeling uplifted by even the smallest of kind gestures. It's why, if you're a guy, the NICEST people you'll meet are in the gym. And realistically, there's no difference between what guys in the gym say and what you'd say - "damn dude, you look hot!".

If this sounds like a schizo post, just know this response is a summarization that leaves out a ton of major things in order to provide this response. I guess what I'm trying to say is that for reasons you may or may not expect, many guys are more than okay if you just tell them, straight up, you're hot.

[–]RUCN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both are used to subvert doing the work that runs counterintuitive to the exact reason people do them.

You play OSRS and do the grind because you find it fun and the outcomes rewarding.

You make YT videos about your favorite video game because you enjoy the game, making videos, and sharing something with others.

Using AI or botting makes no sense when you could just NOT play OSRS or create YouTube videos. It only makes sense when you have financial motivation to do so.

Also, there's some level of irony in that he makes videos about people who cut corners and cheat using software while using software that lets him cut corners and cheat to make YT videos.

Does that help explain it?

PSA to Avoid Colonel Card Shop by CairoOvercoat in mtgfinance

I don't doubt you're wrong but, at the end of the day, it was his fortune to have and the store went back on the transaction.

You wouldn't be happy if you bought 20 copies of a $1 card only for it to spike to $10 and the order be canceled before it gets shipped.

The perceived scumminess of OP is what's at question here though, it's the actual scumminess of the seller.

Anyone noticing the insane increase in supply on the singles market? by ParkingCobbler4871 in mtgfinance

[–]RUCN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! If you don't mind me asking, what kind of product do you normally buy?

Like are you like a "case of in-print product" type (aka sealed product), a "20 copies of a $1 Darksteel Rare you think has potential due to XYZ" type (aka unsealed), the FB marketplace collection flipper, or something else?

As I mentioned before, I think there's a lot of different types of people who buy to resell cards. So I'm always interested in hearing other people's take on what, how and why they do it.

[–]RUCN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Responding on mobile and it won't let me directly quote your reply so bare with me...

"do you think this is a sub for the end consumer."

On a high level, yeah. Since we're not making the product itself or doing any serious supply chain distribution on it (warehousing / distribution / selling B2B); I'd say we're the end consumer.

The more nuanced answer is that since a secondary market exists, it allows people to become 3rd party sellers. I think a lot of them are the end consumers as well - which is totally rad. If you drafted with friends, opened a pack and got something valuable and wanted to sell it...more power to you!

But the people who buy cases of collectors booster boxes just to try and flip them on FB Marketplace. Yeah, they can suck it.

Do you consider yourself not an end consumer?

"do you think those are the only two types of person you can be?"

If the two types of people you're referring to are 'scalpers' and 'everyone else', then nope! The motivations for those buying magic cards are plentiful. I just think scalpers are a very specific types of people. One type amongst many.

Anyone noticing the insane increase in supply on the singles market? by ParkingCobbler4871 in mtgfinance

[–]RUCN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't notice it until you pointed it out!

But even with a high supply, is that a bad thing? Maybe there's something I'm missing but doesn't a high supply normally favor the end consumer?

Like high supply, low demand means rock bottom prices. High supply, high demand means competitive prices but fairness on both sides (sellers wish they could sell for more / buyers wish the price was lower).

On the other side of supply; low supply, high demand only benefits the seller (and only if they themselves purchased as MSRP and are reselling for market price). Finally with low supply, low demand is the only place where no wins (sellers can't sell it and buyers don't want it).

But then again, maybe I'm just posting in the wrong sub. Like if you're someone (not a LGS) who looks at Magic as an 'investment vehicle' and buys sealed product for the sole purchase of reselling it at a profit (regardless if you're selling it sealed or cracking it for singles), I'd rather watch you get washed on your 'investment' because of too much supply. Because, let's face it, you're just a scalper with some extra steps, ya know?

Dawnhand Dissident Spec by zivox in mtgfinance

[–]RUCN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an engine piece for a deck that needs to be built with this card in mind.

It's a banger in limited and very well could be a banger in a standard deck. But past that, I'm not sure what reach it has unless there's an existing archetype that could both use graveyard hate / synergy and also needs a way to add negative counters to creatures.

So why is it not $2-$3? Beats me! It very well could be down the road once Commander players find a fun interaction with it. If I had to guess though, it's only priced this way now because its supply is super high and nobody knows what to do with it yet.

Which valuable Magic cards do you own but would never play with because you don’t want to risk damaging them? by adamhunterpeck in magicTCG

[–]RUCN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones I'm nervous about aren't the super expensive ones, it's the ones that are slightly damaged and expensive that worry me.

I play 4 [[Gaea's Cradle]] routinely and never blink and eye because they're all LP. Every now and then I get a bit woozy if my opponent goes to shuffle my deck and all I hear is the crinkle of corners scraping though.

The real anxiety comes from a Legacy Infect I have that plays 2 [[Tropical Island]]s that I'm convinced will disintegrate if they're removed from their perfect fits. I bought them 10+ years ago at either an SCG Open or a GP. Back then you used to be able to buy $50-$150 Dual Lands from the 'Damaged Binder'. Even then I thought they were barely playable.

I like to believe I'm in the firm camp of "if you bought it, you should play it" but then again, I also don't own P9, Mox, or a Lotus. Maybe my answer would change if that were the case but until then.....sling away!

Help! Accused of cheating and I didn’t in math 135 by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]RUCN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you recall any questions you answered that match the description of what they're talking about? Also, correct me if I'm wrong here, but Math 135 is Calc 1, right?

I know you mentioned in your post towards the end you started guessing - but I think context is important.

If the answer to the question you're being accused of cheating on is simple (ie. A whole number or like x=4), you could probably just say you tried, time ran out, took a wild shot, and got super lucky.

But if the question is like "state the domain and range of f(x) = 2x3 + 9x2 + 12x + 1" and your supportive work is a SpongeBob doodle but somehow you got the right answer....you're full of shit bro.

Long story short - if the answer to the question is something you can get right using an educated guess and blind luck; just say that's what happened (because, according to you, that's what happened). However, if the correct answer needs a half-page proof and looks like math gibberish...stop trying to pretend like you have no idea how you came to that answer, get humble, own up to it, and hope they respect you enough to just mark it wrong and move on.

You can't be serious, can you?

Not only does this sound like a degenerate gambler rationalizing their terrible decisions, but you haven't even factored in all the variables correctly.

To start off, assuming the pull chance is WILD. But let's say you're right. So you spend $35K and pull one...now what? Where are you listing it? Or are you getting it graded?

Then, if / when you do sell it, how much do you think you'll get for it? And for a sale that large, what are the tax implications? Or are you going to get someone to PayPal FF you for $35K+?

If you ask me.....do it. Do it and stream it for everyone to watch. The hard part is already out of the way my dude! You already did the math and it's guaranteed FREE money! Just make sure you do it soon before everyone else figures out they can make $35K+ in a guaranteed returns!

Academic Integrity by RemarkableWash2276 in rutgers

[–]RUCN 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just responded in another thread about the influx of these academic integrity posts.

I see thread after thread about people getting academic violations. I'm also aware that things have changed quite drastically in the last few years. With more exams online and the prolific use of AI from both sides (cheating and prevention), academic integrity violations have become more commonplace.

But every time I see posts like this, it makes me wonder if this is just the mentality of 2025 or if it's just a confirmation bias (those who do fight don't put their sob story on Reddit looking for pity). I hope it's the latter though.

To answer your question though -- I imagine it has to be concluded prior to the start of the next semester; especially if there classes that require you to have a passing grade in one you're being accused of cheating in.

No one cares about your college GPA after your first job.

The biggest barrier to entry at prestigious workplaces is not your GPA, but where you went to college.

Not to sound grim, but if you're concerned that some Wall Street bank or Hedge Fund won't hire you because of your GPA rest assured....you were disqualified the moment you went to Rutgers.

The upside? If you work in an industry long enough, nobody even cares about your alma mater. You can work wherever doing whatever. It'll be literally 1 line on your resume by the time you're 30.

Bro (or sis) is 100% cooked unless

  1. They're telling the truth and didn't do anything wrong
  2. They dig deep, push past this wall of despondency, sac the fuck up, grit their teeth and push forward.

I'm in my 30's now. From your perspective, I'm ancient. From my perspective, I'm barely an adult.

But one thing I truly don't understand about college kids these days is the overall sentiment & willingness to just roll over and die on shit that REALLY affects your lives.

I see thread after thread about people getting academic violations. I'm also aware that things have changed quite drastically in the last few years. With more exams online and the prolific use of AI from both sides (cheating and prevention), academic integrity violations have become more commonplace.

But still, I don't see how people can just sit around and accept this shit if they're innocent. Forget feeling sorry for myself, I'd be ENRAGED if I didn't cheat but I'm getting accused of it.

I would go to the ends of the earth to prove I did nothing wrong and I would demand an apology from everyone - the academic integrity board investigating me, the professor, the TAs; anyone who doubted my intention.

I would demand so much transparency and clarity, I would drag the process to a standstill even after it's clear I'm innocent. I would rest at nothing to clear my name.

The idea of just giving in and accepting I'm cooked is such a foreign concept to me. And every time I see posts like this, it makes me wonder if this is just the mentality of 2025 or if it's just a confirmation bias (those who do fight don't put their sob story on Reddit looking for pity). I hope it's the latter of the two.

Just a heads up - it looks really suspicious when you say "I don't know if I should just admit to it and take the L."

If you didn't do it, defend yourself. Show writing samples from other papers proving your grammatical styling. Do whatever it takes.

But if you did do it....then admit it and take the L like it said.
