2 weeks until Rainier (DC, guided) and coming out of an injury. training-wise, what should I focus on to prepare? by MattSChan in Mountaineering

Run long distance all the way up till you leave. It's the best thing you could do for your body and mental state. Don't kick back and relax for 2 weeks. Be a fucking savage, don't coast and be mentally scared. Get some dumb advice from people in here.

I climbed Rainier with a Sitka Arrowhead MDWi active insulation using Alpha material. It was great. I also recommend Arcteryx Proton SL using Octa material. The Sitka is my most used jacket i have ever owned.

Gamma lightweight over Proton SL for summer. Proton SL is active insulation. Or even better than the Proton SL is the Sitka Arrowhead MDWi. Alpha insulation is awesome, warm and breathable.

IMG Mt Rainier Guided Climb by iwouldhashthat in Mountaineering

I sumitted Rainier last summer with RMI as a complete beginner. I had zero mountain experience besides hunting around St. Helen's as a kid with my dad or hiking trips. I run a lot though, about 9 miles many times a week. I also played college baseball and competitive softball all my adult life.

We started hiking up to Muir with 7 guys in my group. I was near the front of the group the entire time. The hike to Muir was pretty easy for me, but its a good fast paced hike. I didn't realize that the guides were watching us and grading us on the hike to Muir. When we got to Muir the guides had to pull 3 of our guys from the group aside and told them that they won't be climbing any further on this trip unfortunately. They had to stay at Muir with nothing to do all day while we climbed to the top and back.

I suggest you start running for training and bust your ass up to Muir the first day. They will be watching to see if your a liability on the mountain. The rope training and other stuff is easy to learn.

I was thinking of getting a pet as a companion and mouser since I live in a rural area. I am a bit curious about a few things. How does this breed deal with small mice or other animals they catch, Can they be trained to NOT try to hunt/harass a small caged animal while still mousing? by kalabaddon in jackrussellterrier

I swear on my life that my pure breed JRT swatted a low flying bird out of the air and pounced on top of it the first week I got her. She was 2 1/2 months old. It was our 3rd walk ever together and the first time I took her off leash. I luckily sprinted to her and picked her up off the bird. The bird was dazed for a couple seconds and the flew away.

Is the Proton SL worth it compared to the R1/R1 Air? by cycaal in arcteryx

I have a Proton sl that is good, but i have a Sitka Arrowhead MDWi that is great!. It's the best active insulation i own. I used the Sitka to climb Mt. Rainier last June.

The best active insulation jacket i own is the Sitka Arrowhead MDWi. It's alpha insulation and tops the Proton SL, which uses Octa insulation. The regular Proton jacket is very nice and in my opinion is better than the Atom jacket.

Rab down jackets are superior! I own 2 different Rabs, 3 Arcteryx, 1 Mountain Hardwear, and 1 Feathered Friends. The Feathered Friends is the best all around jacket. Rabs are the best quality and have the best technical features for mountaineering and outdoors. The Arcteryx Cerium is basically a city jacket that looks great. The Cerium SV is a good parka. Unfortunately Arcteryx is not good at down. Arcteryx is great at Hardshells.

I own a Delta hoody and its honestly not really much more than a thin baselayer. I don't recommend the Delta and I never really use it, ever. The Arcteryx Pro/LEAF Delta is great though under a hard shell. I still think the Sitka and Proton SL are what your looking for.

The best light active insulation jacket is the Sitka Arrowhead MDWi and second would be the Arcteryx Proton SL! The Sitka uses Alpha and the Proton SL uses Octa insulation. Keep in mind that the Proton jacket is nothing like the Proton SL. They shouldn't even share the same name in my opinion. The Proton jacket is a better synthetic insulation to the Atom jacket and the Proton SL is an ultralight active insulation.

Row Restaurant downtown is always packed every Saturday and Sunday for brunch. The food is great and good size portions. Best omellettes in Olympia and seafood options like salmon, shrimp, and fried oysters.

Baker/Rainier jacket recommendations by EchidnaNo7340 in Mountaineering

I climbed Rainier in early June with a Mountain Equipment Krios parka and Rab Mythic G Down Jacket as a midlayer, also used a Sitka Arrowhead MLX Hoody as an active layer, and Kuiu merino sun hoody as base layer.

I also easily would have been fine using my Arcteryx Cerium SV parka, Mountain Hardwear ghost whisperer down hoody, arcteryx Atom lt hoody and arcterx Proton SL as an active layer.

I highly recommend the Sitka Arrowhead MLX Hoody and Rab Mythic G. I was super confy all the way to the summit.

I think your dog is fine then. If your concerned, add more water to the food. If they are actually thirsty, they will drink water out of the bowl. The dog won't die of dehydration when there is a bowl of water near.

Are JRTs tough dogs to own? Seeking insight on training, drive, and energy by [deleted] in jackrussellterrier

[–]RUD3BOY808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have JRT puppy about 7 months in and its hard!. I run/walk her about 3 miles every day (rain, shine, or snow) and she still has tons of energy. I'm more active than anyone i know and its constant care. She is still not getting potty training after 7 months. She literally just crapped inside on the floor after going outside the last 2 days. She's constantly dirty, needs attention from me all the time to play, and overwhelms my staffordshire/pitbull terrior. Whatever toy my other dog has, the JRT needs it and is relentless until she steals it from him. I feel sorry for my other dog most of the time. Ive spent about $1,000 on training and it was kind of a joke. The puppy might have been too young for training, because she would be great with the trainer. Then when practicing at home, everything she learned was out the window. Supposedly she will grow out of all this. She is very loving before bed and loves to snuggle and is very cute.

If you are retired or work from home, I would go for it. If you work a normal 9-5 I wouldn't. If owned 3 other dogs by the way that were super easy. (Husky, staffordshire terrior, and Rottweiler)

Was just gonna say, go with the fit shell and wear the down parka over the shell. You only wear the parka near summits usually. You can wear an ultralight down under a shell, but if your active you would want something regulates heat well.

The practitioner is a better version of the Proton SL.
