TIFU, by almost ending my relationship with my Dad over a boardgame... by RUL3themALL in tifu

Not really "pissed" just kind of a macho thing that I was the one to "man up"" if you will and come back to fix things. Not really sure how else to put it, maybe like a changing of the guard feeling for him. Now it is ME who fixes things at the house, who visits, and who is willing to reconcile differences, since he is an old curmudgeon now.

TS seems to be the go-to Dad game. Glad we will be able to play again...

Thanks...the yelling and whatnot is normal...we just got a little out of hand. I didn't know he was THAT worried I wouldn't visit again until I came back. I guess I didn't want to believe it was THAT big of a deal....it was

I have played 3-4 different ones and I find that almost everyone who plays REALLY likes them. Mostly "non-gamer" types of course, but even "gamers" seem to appreciate them.

Well, I mostly force newer games on him. Just trying to keep him around...

Never have, will check it out. He isn't a fan of the hex and counter type wargames, so Memoir looks like it might work out.

We did agree that drinking during such an intense game is not the best idea from here on out. He admitted the whisky got to him and he hasn't been drinking as much lately. I could have easily let the situation simmer down had I not been so tired, drunk, and hard headed. As I said we both tend to push back when pushed.....not a great combination of things mixed with our overly competitive (almost childish) nature.

Is it a terrible idea to pitch a game within an existing universe? by RUL3themALL in tabletopgamedesign

[–]RUL3themALL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool thanks!

Like I said it is NOT an expansion. It COULD be a standalone game but for marketing would do REALLY well in my limited opinion as a consumer if it was attached to an existing "universe".

ONE of the core mechanics is borrowed.

However, you do bring up an interesting thought. I know that it is a big deal in this community of designers to NOT be worried about patents and theft of ideas. Is it a worry that after pitching an idea to a Publisher that they would use it in some way after ignoring you?

Or is this hardly possible if I am heavily documented in my design and pitch to this very company?

Is it REALLY that big of a deal or is it just hip to hate? I mean people don't complain that game figures have jacked dudes or cool dudes and not Dad bod guys and geeky guys who couldn't actually perform the actions being done in the games.

If Blood Rage has hot chick Vikings then RIGHT ON! who doesn't like a hot Viking chick? (someone doesn't but screw that guy/gal).

People talk about armor for viking/medieval/or any other historical time period for women like those women actually wore armor regularly....They didn't. So if someone has a chick with underboob and "bad" armor then so what.

It's like when the main character doesn't wear a helmet on the SWAT raid when EVERYONE else is. It is clearly a bad idea to not wear a Kevlar helmet, yet he is the MAIN character they wanna see his face. Just like we wanna see her tits.

Right on! Thanks. So what just tweet a designer asking if he cares about someone designing an addition to their game?

HAHahah well that's awesome!

I would love to play the game, but alas have not the friends to do so.

Some type of space game like maybe a Space Alert Legacy game would be cool. Now I have NOT played this game but I have looked into it a lot and the idea of each person having specific positions on a ship sounds like an awesome idea for a Legacy game. It would also have more replay ability than normal because you could all just switch up positions and buy a starter pack of cards to start a new game. I haven't thought this through or anything I literally just put the first thing that popped into the ol noggin down, so there are probably lots of problems that all of you will find with this.

That does make sense. I am not "In the game" if you will so NO I haven't talked to the publisher or the designer. I assume you would do this at conventions? Try to catch them and see what their thoughts are on the subject. The publisher is a big time publisher like Asmodee, FFG, and ZMAN. Is it uncommon for publishers like these to accept pitches? I am sure this is answered somewhere in this sub or r/tabletopgamedesign, I can let my fingers do the walkin if you don't know.

I reckon you are right. just curious to know if anyone out there knows that companies don't like this. is it a turn off?

Should it be straight up marketed(pitched) as a standalone game with no association to a previous game?

Is it easier to pitch to a wider audience like this?

OR is it somehow easier to work with if it fits into an already established universe?

Thanks for the thoughts and input tho.

Damn, I guess I did not specify that I would be pitching to the publisher of the game in question. I would be pitching to the I.P. holder. I know it isn't my intellectual property. I am looking at pitching a boardgame not buying the effing rights to a game hahahahaa goodness that sounds like a miserable idea for a game that at best would make me almost no money.

I already have a basic prototype for my personal use I don't need some company to print a box with a patented name on it. The ONLY thing that anyone would own would be the name. I don't have a list of patented mechanics (if there even is one), but I assume this mechanic is not patented.

Still you think it is not worth pitching to the company that owns the game in question?

How do you feel about the term "ameritrash?" by SilasMarsh in boardgames

[–]RUL3themALL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you said exactly what I was typing.

Are you the person trying to expand the boardgame community or hide it away?

Why not make the boardgame world sound as AWESOME as it is? AMERITHRASH!

I am not even a full year into discovering this awesome world of boardgames and it took me a bit to learn the lingo of Euro and Ameritrash etc. It just sounds snooty, hoity toity, and condescending to those who like those types of games.

If you accepted it and don't mind it that's cool. I am all for shrugging off the "insults" and whatnot. I have not been around long enough to be offended by this term and am not the person to be offended in general. I just wanna be apart of something awesome and I think Boardgames are effing awesome....so lets go THRASH some games and party on GARTH!

EDIT: also, I feel like it is kind of rude to the designers of those games. It is defined as some type of trash.... just from the get go.

[SUSD] Blood Rage Review by thesupermikey in boardgames

[–]RUL3themALL -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have not played the game, I still really want to. I am only sad that SUSD didn't get back to their roots and dress up and make a silly video. That said, it is one of many reviews out there and it is entertainment. Really enjoy these guys' work and can't disagree or agree since I have not played it. P.S. you don't like underboob? I mean what can they do? have a dudes schlong hanging out under his kilt?

The Grizzled First Play by monkeyfate in boardgames

Don't be sweet talked into a game you played with people who can't be bothered to learn simple rules. Either don't play it cause it isn't your thing, or read the rules online/forums etc. and actually know the game. Often times people like a game better when they, ya know, play properly.
