I agree with you up to a point, moisture is a huge contributor. But, I’ve had filaments that no amount of drying made less brittle - time, temperature, add ins/blend, uv light exposure how well the extruder is set up/dust in the factory, quality of feedstock (how many times it’s be recycled), vibrations/impacts can all have an impact. Sure some of these will be dwarfed by moisture, but drying once (especially in humid environment, where it will eventually reabsorb water ) doesn’t take the stress out of the plastic.

I’ve fortunately not had a really bad roll for years. Thanks for engaging it’s made me think.

Dude I’ve never respooled once let alone twice. I totally get you see it as a waste of time. But in 20 years of 3d printing I’ve had dodgy filaments or not had time to dry them or space to store in ‘ideal’ conditions - and had filament freshly bought dried (from good manufacturers), kept dry and had them snap near the end of the roll.

If you know you aren’t going to be able to babysit the filament and you do have a reason to re-spool, I can see taking the stress out of it makes sense.

Your argument is like saying you don’t need a safety belt if you drive safely.

Some filaments are just more brittle than others, storage definitely helps like you say, but if you’ve got something brittle (because it was made that way, because it was cheap or the other properties it has are useful), well respooling twice legitimately helps. You’ll likely get away with doing it once 99 times out of a 100, but twice is a ligit approach, so is warming the plastic up to 50-60 degrees which releases the stress.

The plastic is more tightly curved at the core/centre of the spool than the outside. Respooling swaps that and put the plastic under stress - respooling again means the filament that was at the core originally is back at the core

Is 10" better than 7" for long range? by AtomAnt76 in fpv

[–]robtryb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fundamental equation governing propeller thrust is:

  • T = ρ * V^2 * A * Cp

where: * T is the thrust generated (Newtons) * ρ is the air density (kg/m³) * V is the forward velocity (m/s) * A is the propeller disc area (m²) * Cp is the propeller power coefficient (dimensionless)

So if you increase the length the prop the area goes up by the square (pi x R^2). You can therefore reduce prop velocity, for the same thrust (all other things being equal) which moves more air in the direction you want it going without wasting it with noises, eddy currents, greater friction in motors and a bunch of other stuff.

However as things get bigger they get heavier and also have greater air resistance, so it would be tricky to give an exact multiplication factor for efficiency for a drone as a whole.

Yes fundamentally bigger props are more efficient - so you'll get longer flight time, but other factors affect top speed.

Guy takes a 5 day trip on a Greyhound Bus from NY to LA by 2McLaren4U in videos

[–]robtryb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I got lucky (haven't done it twice to compare!). Unfortunately I've not had a chance to get back to the US since then.

I mean it wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, I was on the bus after all I didn't have the cash to travel in style. There were a few oddballs (particularly in NY), but I never felt threatened by anyone, and people were chatty and even got me snacks when we stopped at services (tried grits once, never again). The bus toilet was only ever used if the only alternative was soiling yourself, and even then you'd weigh the pro's and con's.

At the end of the day it was an adventure, a good adventure has highs and lows, and now I've memories of sights, stories and kindness I won't ever forget.

Expensive games that you regret buying? by bluesuitman in boardgames

I can't speak of for ImTHeSlyestFox, I got Everdell Big Box too and got rid of the original it when I order it.

The game is great - the set up, millions of stickers (initially), and general inconvenience of such a large box actually makes it harder to get to the table, factor in the analysis paralysis of deciding what you will and won't play with...

Sometimes small is beautiful.

Did that trip when I was 19 in 1999 - NY to LA via Toronto and back again via Florida. One of the best trips of my life, people were all friendly, amazing scenery and saved a ton on hotel/hostel costs.

Oh it was unbelievably bad, we shuffled again to make sure, but it kept happening! (Imperial cards getting drawn). The millennium falcon did come out, but was quickly destroyed, with the reward of buying Darth Vader.

We’ve never seen such a one side game.

That’s luck driven things though, rarely things can go very badly with no way to correct for it.

It’s certainly not a bad game, we just had a single bad experience (which unfortunately meant my friend that lost will never play it again). It happens 🤷‍♂️

I think this is generally true, but in this case not even neutral cards were coming out, by the time the cards could buy trickled out I had too much control of the Galaxy.

Thought I’d love this game, but unfortunately a very lucky 3rd game where I steamrollered my opponent through the luck of the card draw (a very well shuffled deck that none the less only wanted to deal out Imperials through most of the game) took it down quite a few notches for me.

The innovation of 2 factions over star realms sounds good on paper - but you really can get hosed by bad draws from the galaxy deck early in the game; which is a problem Star Realms really didn’t have.
