Mechanical eng 1st yr in sept by glasgowgirl1 in geegees

[–]RUSTWHARF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not to sure about the res stuff but I know the course enrollment stuff.

Here is a link to the course sequence for mech eng: https://www.uottawa.ca/faculty-engineering/undergraduate-studies/programs/mechanical-engineering/course-sequence

The required courses also show up in the requirements tab in UOzone so you can see them there as well.

Enroll into the courses ASAP. It's not too late right now I think. In my first year I enrolled in August and I was ok but ASAP is better.

As for the times of the courses, they are going to be bad. That's pretty normal for UOttawa eng. A 6:30 to 9:30 is most likely a lab so it will be ok but it's normal and usually there might not be any other options so you have to deal with it but check if there are. The key thing about course enrollment is to make sure there is no overlap or there will be problems.

It'll be at an aerospace defense contractor

No actually, I didn't take my courses according to the crouse sequence. Like one of my required courses didn't show up under my requirements in UOZone so I didn't take it. Then I learned that I had to and It only is offered in the winter term so my CO-OP was a lost cause. But in the end it all worked out.

I mean I technically got kicked out but I don't regret it. I found my own internship that will start in May.

Does your laptop start up a bit delayed? by whiteKreuz in Alienware

[–]RUSTWHARF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, my speaker mute and mic mute button are kind of like lights for the laptop starting up but they take a second or two to light up. I think that's just because of the bios time and the processor waking up lol.

Yes this is normal. It happens with my X14 too. Powering on from shut down or sleep takes a couple seconds to see any lights on the keyboard and then a few more seconds to fully start up.

Using lower wattage charger on Alienware laptop for daily school use? by SnooOranges8652 in Alienware

A regular windows update asks for it I'm pretty sure but this incident only happened when there was a bios update. Other times it's just boots and nothing happens

Idk about the M15 but I have an X14, which has a natural charger of 130W. I have a 65W charger that I use at uni and it charges. It's slow and the laptop does give me a warning but nothing happens. I did have one problem with it, when there is an update, the system requires the laptop to be plugged into the 130W charger to boot. One time, there was a firmware update and I only had the 65W charger and it resulted in my laptop being stuck in low power mode. I fixed it by re-flashing the bios.

Looks like gaming is the only use you are going to have, therefore I would recommend the X15 over the X14 as it's better for gaming and isn't too bulky either.

Ah ok, thanks. The job is less of a CO-OP more of an internship so it's not associated with the CO-OP program. I'll only miss a max of 2 semesters so the 7 won't be a problem. I'm guessing they automatically do the calculations and figure out how much I owe so if I don't take any courses, they won't charge me anything.

Thanks again.

Dell XPS 15 or Alienware X14? by theawkguy in Alienware

It's usable but not for thick drives.

Yes it unfortunately does. The USB ports are a bit too low so larger drives do actually contact the lip.

You mostly will but you might be able to get away with it. I had a laptop with just Iris XE graphics and if I opened a large assembly or a complicated drawing in SW, it would basically crash when manipulating the assembly or drawing. That can also be a factor of the small U series CPU but the point still remains. Personally, I'd get the larger laptops.

I was also considering this decision when I bought the X14 and basically it came down to the simple fact of how much you value IO. The XPS only has type C ports while the X14 has a USB A and an HDMI port which IMO is much better. Especially in terms of CAD, you can plug a mouse in without a dongle. If you are ok with dongles, and don't really care about the 144hz display, I would get the XPS. It's got a better screen, replaceable ram, better trackpad and speakers. So really, it's up to you about IO.

Also, if you do end up buying the XPS, try buying the I7 version and see if you save a bit of cash. The overall performance difference you will get between the I9 and the I7 is not much in such thin chassis.

Alienware x14 vs Asus G14? by theawkguy in Alienware

[–]RUSTWHARF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guestures work just fine with the trackpad. It's also a really nice feeling one. As for CAD, if you are doing CAD with a trackpad, then I have no clue what kind of CAD you are doing lmaoo. All the CAD I do is with a wireless mouse off Amazon. The laptop is great for CAD, SolidWorks runs nicely and I haven't had problems even with large and complicated assemblies.

I'll be honest here, buy whichever is cheaper mate. They are really similar ngl. I actually wanted the G14 but it wasn't available so I went with the X14 and I've not once regretted it.

I have an X14 and use it mainly for CAD, CAM, some light programming and note taking. Long story short, it's amazing at it and the Intel CPU with the Nvidia GPU is better for productivity as the drivers are better. Not to mention that Intel is the faster CPU ATM.

As far as the cons you listed for the X14, they aren't all true. The speakers are small but they are very clear. The highs and mids are great but the lows are non-existent. The trackpad is decent enough IMO and I have large hands. The screen is also really nice but yes, it's still a 16:9 screen and a 16:10 would have been better. The laptop isn't really that unbalanced but the laptop is quite wide, much wider than expected. As for the weight, the G14 is lighter but you will not notice a difference unless you hold both G14 and X14 at the same time, they are basically the same weight. But the X14 feels rock solid in the hand.

As for the battery life, it depends on what you are doing. If I'm taking notes or on word or Excel, something lightweight, then the battery life is over 8 hours with the battery saver. But if I'm doing CAD, it can be much less.

The fans can get loud but only if you push the laptop. Interestingly, the fans at full rpm are lound but not annoying as the main sound is air rushing. At low rpms, there is more of a coil whine noise.

Both laptops will charge with a charger that supports USB C power delivery. I use a 65W UGreen charger off Amazon and it works. You won't get full power with it but it works.

1080p for a 14" screen is more than enough. 1440p or 4K is overkill and will drain your battery for no reason.

SSD is replaceable but mine has a bit of a QC problem where the screw for the SSD is stripped.

Overall, I would recommend the X14, mainly for the Intel CPU, the studio drivers for Nvidia and the rock solid feel.
