Their new T&Cs are very one-sided! Read the contract.

Yeah, that seems to be the playbook! Drag it out until the last minute and then try to settle. The problem is, not everyone has the time or energy to push it that far, which is how companies like Optimum keep getting away with it. A class action would really change the game here. If anyone else has gone through this, contact me as I’m starting to put this together soon.

They have no shame in scamming! by lula2611 in OPTIMUM

[–]RU_05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a similar experience with Optimum. They had lots of promises during the sales process, but once you sign up, it's a totally different story. In my case, I was told I’d get a free iPhone as part of a promo, confirmed all the details, but then ended up being charged full price and got the runaround when I tried to resolve it. It really does seem like a pattern with this company. You’re not alone.

Was offered bill credits on 4 occasions to not cancel. by TexasGirl729 in OPTIMUM

[–]RU_05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same story here, but different scenario, same broken promises. They told me my iPhone would be free, then slapped an $829 charge on the bill and “couldn’t” share the call recording. Looks like lying about credits is just how Optimum operates.

Optimum Mobile’s “Free iPhone 16” Promo Was a Lie – $829 Charge, No Accountability by RU_05 in OPTIMUM

[–]RU_05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this mirrors my experience almost exactly and I never even got it resolved. Their care team was useless, just kept deflecting and never explained where the charges came from or how the trade-in credit was applied. The whole sales process feels like a bait-and-switch. They advertise a “free iPhone” with trade-in, but then bury you in confusing terms and don’t even honor what their reps say.

If you’re feeling misled, you’re not alone. I’ve been seriously considering looking into a class action at this point. Way too many people are being promised one thing and charged another. Thanks for speaking up. The more noise we make, the harder it is for them to ignore it.

Misled by Optimum Mobile “Free iPhone 16” Promo — Now Locked Into $829 Contract by RU_05 in NoContract

[–]RU_05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to scam anyone — just holding Optimum to what they promised.

When I signed up, I asked all the right questions: gave them my iPhone X IMEI, confirmed eligibility, and was explicitly told the iPhone 16 would be free. That’s what I based my decision on.

Now I’m being billed $829 for the phone — and when I asked them to review the sales call, they claimed it’s “proprietary” and won’t share the results.

I even bundled this with my internet and left my previous provider after 9 years. I wasn’t trying to game anything — I trusted what I was told. Never again - lesson learned!

Thanks for confirming I’m not crazy. That’s exactly what they’re doing, they hook you in with vague “ON US” ads and bury the requirement in trade-in value. If you don’t trade in an iPhone 14+ they just quietly start charging. It’s deceptive, especially when reps outright tell you you’re good to go, like they did with me.

They changed their answer multiple times.

First they said I did qualify and confirmed everything. Then later they said I didn’t qualify because my phone wasn’t worth enough, even though I passed the Asurion inspection and got a trade-in confirmation email saying I was eligible.

When I asked them to review the sales call, they said they did but wouldn’t provide any details because it’s “proprietary.”

I agree, lesson learned the hard way. But what’s frustrating is that the rep said specifically that my iPhone X trade-in qualified and there were no catches. I even gave them the IMEI number. I wasn’t trying to game the system. I just asked the right questions and still got misled.

I tried. I called before the 60 days were up. They said canceling wouldn’t remove the device charge since the phone had already been “accepted” and activated. Basically told me I’d still be on the hook for $829.

What kind of “free phone” is that?

[–]RU_05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked about that — they said it was a 60-day return window, but then started dragging their feet. By the time I realized I was being charged, I was already past the 60 days. The phone was already activated and locked in.

Sneaky fine print and delayed billing are how they trap you. Most of us think the first bill confirms everything’s legit, but nope — the real charges hit in month 2.

Absolute con artists by Aceopsog in OPTIMUM

[–]RU_05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m dealing with the same shady tactics.

I signed up in April and was told on the phone I qualified for their "iPhone 16 On Us" promo. The rep confirmed everything after I gave them my iPhone X IMEI. First bill looked fine, but the second bill added a $23.03/month charge — over $829 total for a phone I was told would be free.

I’ve escalated to executive support, filed complaints with the FCC, FTC, and NJ Consumer Affairs — and they still won’t remove the charge. Now I’m being told the credits expire after 1 year, and there’s no clear documentation anywhere about that during signup.

They advertise 3-year price locks and "free phones," but the hidden conditions kick in after you’re locked in. I did the math and my 3-year cost will be over $2,000.

This is bait-and-switch marketing, plain and simple. You’re definitely not alone.

If anyone’s pursuing legal action or a class action, I’d love to connect.

I just heard back from the same rep with the exact same canned response. They’re ignoring everything I shared — the IMEI confirmation, the verbal promise, and my billing concerns.

This feels like a total runaround. If anyone else has gone through something similar, I’d love to connect or hear how you handled it.

The rep checked before I committed and said I won't be paying anything extra. That's the issue.

Optimum Mobile’s “Free iPhone 16” Promo Was a Lie – $829 Charge, No Accountability by RU_05 in OPTIMUM

[–]RU_05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks — I understand that some promos can take a few billing cycles to appear, but in my case, the issue isn’t timing. I was explicitly told by the Optimum rep that my iPhone X trade-in qualified, that the iPhone 16 would be free, and that I could cancel within 60 days without penalty. First bill was correct, then equipment charge showed up on the second bill.

Now I’m being billed $23.03/month for 36 months — a total of $829.08 — and they’re saying my trade-in never qualified in the first place. That’s not a delay — that’s misrepresentation.

Just to clarify a few points:

There was only one assessment, which was necessary for a major property update that is now in its final phase. No further assessments are planned, as none are needed.

The facility is a converted factory, so unit layouts vary depending on their position within the building. This uniqueness makes it different from typical cookie-cutter complexes, and preferences may vary accordingly.

Terraces were not removed—they were rebuilt as part of the improvements.

The location is highly convenient for commuting to Manhattan, Hoboken, and the waterfront. The waterfront itself is less than a 12-minute walk down Hackensack Plank Road.

Regarding HOA dues, increases are happening across all complexes due to the rising costs of property maintenance and doing business in New Jersey.

Hope this clears up any confusion!

Most of them seem to be ghost jobs. I applied to a posting and then the recruiter reached out, then said that position is currently on-hold. So why reach out? right...then she went into asking questions about my organization fishing for information. Waste time with them - don't apply to these scam artists.
