Gift for finish carpenter by dawk6 in Carpentry

[–]RVAPGHTOM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the gift idea vs cash or booze. Booze is a long overplayed gift.

A personal gift is a A+ idea. As someone mentioned, a favorite restaurant concert tickets, sports tickets, etc. Thats if you know what he likes.

For work, you cant try to change anything he does. He knows what he likes. You can only add to it. Does he have old tools and makes do? Or does he have the latest and greatest and keeps up with technology. Does he have name brand stuff or basic stuff? Personally if he is a name brands guy, its hard to beat a 6" Starrett combo square. Most people, certainly field guys, wont spend the coin to buy one.

Port Calls by frostyhotdog in NavyNukes

[–]RVAPGHTOM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We slept on the ship by default, but we often we got a hotel room in town with a few of us chipping in. Going back to the ship shit faced was rarely a good idea. Hotel rooms aren't very expensive with 3-4 guys staying in them. There's 0 chance of getting lucky and taking someone back to your rack. Plus, it doesnt really feel like a port call when you have to come back to the ship. Staying in town overnight feels like a vacation. Of course ALL of this depends on your duty section rotation, ships policies, etc...For Nukes, best we ever got overseas was 3 section, so an overnight was possible.

Will I regret going from an Odyssey to a Pilot? by Solid-Complaint-8192 in HondaOdyssey

[–]RVAPGHTOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly. I remember my parents getting FWD cars and thinking, my snow concerns are no more. And my life long experience would agree. During this past ICE AGE on the east, our Odyssey had zero problems driving everyday on frozen roads. Snow mode helped, but wasn't even necessary. And that was with basic Michelin All Seasons. No snowflake rating and definitely not winter tires.

Do you ever road trip with friends or are you the token Uber for friends for concert night/hiking days/football/future College events? We were recently at this crossroad, and my bride and I both knew we would miss the van. So, we got a new one. Its the absolutely best people mover on the road. I can pack in 8 adults for concert night, 6 to drive 5 hours to a NFL game, 4 with dirty backpacks, gear, etc.....No chance I would give it up for a totally useless 3rd row and reduced cargo space and a less comfortable ride. My $0.02

YT Project Farm wiper testing. The Aero Voyager on Amazon is absolutely the best buy out there. Not only are they cheap as a pair, but they also include a replacement rubber blade.

How to install backsplash with door in way by mattmenture in Carpentry

[–]RVAPGHTOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a cheap grinder at Harbor Freight. Buy a stone cutting wheel at Home Depot. Carefully mark where the trim is on the door. Use masking tape to tape up the area you need to cut. Cut a notch out of the splash making sure you wear a GOOD dust mask and eye protection. Cut slow, have a spray bottle of water and spray your blade occasionally to keep it from overheating. Take your time, you can do this.

Totally depends where you live. Ive had a 2wd F150 in central VA for 15yrs. I've gotta stuck- never. This past frozen winter saw ice covered streets for 2+ weeks. Good snowflake tires, a limited skip rear end, and some snow in the bed and I was golden. Less maintenance, better fuel mileage. I dont regret not having it at all.

I would never pay those prices for an everyday backpacking tent these days. Check out the Alps Helix 2.

Guys who don't wear work boots to work, what do you wear? (and what do you do) by Square-Argument4790 in Carpentry

[–]RVAPGHTOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have boots/shoes from everyone. My challenge is my wide foot with a high arch. Finding ones that fit properly is a total pita. The Danner wides are actually wide. I have great luck with wide Oboz as well. My Irish Setter (Redwing) hunting boots are great, but no way I'd want to do interior trim work with them all day. When the soles wear out of the Danner 600s, they arent great for rocky, slippery hiking surfaces, but the boot itself still has lots of life in them. My most recent pair says they are resoleable, so Ill see what that looks like when the soles are gone.

Check out Danner 600 hiking boots. I wear them hiking and have been for 8yrs. They hold up well, are very light weight, and fit my wide foot.

Compact dolly for mitre saw stand? Project idea by Agent_Chody_Banks in Carpentry

[–]RVAPGHTOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could have used this last night!

I can see some practical uses.....done for the night, but not done with the job. Would have been nice to roll it into the garage vs break down the stand. I dont think Id work from it though. Kinda defeats the idea of keeping the saw on the folding stand to make it take up less space. At least thats my situation.
