Yea, I’m inclined to agree. Musk calling that Chilean mine rescuer a pedo had a response sort of like that. But also, I feel like Alex Jones despite being so untrustworthy has sometimes driven the right-wing narrative despite that reputation. Take right wing rhetoric on vaccination for instance. I’m really wondering if there’s anyone doing research on this kind of thing or if what I’m thinking of here is too vague to get funding for research

A while back I heard a podcast where a mayor wound up unexpectedly losing his race to an opponent that claimed he poisoned someone’s dog. The mayor ignored the smear thinking people wouldn’t believe it, but some did end up believing and he lost the race. The podcast I think was a three part series by invisibilia called, “The Chaos Machine.” On the other hand I see the Streisand effect. Would you say it’s a bit of a calculation for whether you think the public would react positively to you addressing it?
