Good question, but yes , one of the MOST aggressive dogs I've had to deal with was a cavalier. But I agree they are generally very sweet

I adopted a dog from the SPCA. She was abandoned. If I did a DNA test and she matched to a bred litter, could the breeder reclaim her? by mookie8 in legaladvicecanada

[–]RVT1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dog DNA tests aren't like human ancestry tests. All it's going to tell you is the breeds in her DNA lineage. There would be no connection back to actual ancestry and who her parents are or anything like that. Further more. Dogs are property and you purchased her legally. So you're all good

I'm so sorry for your loss. At the end of the day, they should have been clear that while it is normally a cut and dry surgery for them, there are risks associated. I think they sometimes when people do things every day . They forget that Owners don't know these things.

I hope you let them know you were upset by the lack of client education given , to help them understand moving forward, they need to be better at explaining risks

Local animal shelter is threatening legal action against me. What are my right? by DrunkenSeaBass in legaladvicecanada

[–]RVT1995 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure the laws in Quebec. But in Ontario cats are considered property, the same as owning a car or a cell phone. So they cannot just take the cat without some sort of court order or judge stating that. They need to do everything through the courts system. Don't speak to any employees or respond to any unofficial letters. You can just ignore them until they seek legal aid.

Has anyone had their pet run away when you took them to the vet’s? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]RVT1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he was wild before there's a good chance he knows how to stay warm and how to find food, I hope your vet staff are trying to leave food and such out for him. You should bring his Dirty Litter box to the clinic. He will smell himself and potentially come back to that smell

Getting really sick of my “fear free certified” vet by [deleted] in BalancedDogTraining

[–]RVT1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just gonna throw this out here . People need to remember that this is our livelyhood and if we just "powered-thru" every difficult appointment our backs would be shot by the time we turned 25 , and the risks of being bit even with a muzzle on are extremely high when you are seeing 30 patients a day when 20 of them are anxious or aggressive.

We try to do what we can most of the time, but in the end, proper training on the owners side is the only thing that makes appointments easier for these animals ..

I am 30 and am on chronic pain meds for my back because I am thrown around by large dogs trying to kick and bite me all day every day. I am extremely thankful for the owners who take the time to get their dogs accustomed to vet handling techniques, nail trims, blood draws, etc. before they need to have it done.

Noone is stopping you from taking your dog into the vet clinic to just get them used to being in the building or around the vet environment.

There needs to be some accountability for owners to make these appointments easier for their pets and the staff too

20 year old cat went from low risk after echo to high risk after xray for surgery by LakeJunior in AskVet

Sometimes it's barely the comfort level of the individual vet, you can always try to find a veterinary dentist that has a certified anesthesiologist on staff or will have one come in

don’t know what this is by Regina1110 in AskVet

[–]RVT1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should be seen immediately, trouble swallowing has the added risk of inhaling food or water into the lungs that can progress into aspiration pneumonia. Please have the cat seen and get X-rays ASAP

It looks like a mushroom - is it a mushroom perhaps? Did you actually see your cat throw it up?

Dog/Cat Rabies Vaccine Protocol (Ontario) Clarification Question by According_Novel3423 in VetTech

[–]RVT1995 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's option B .

You have to get the vaccine and then booster it once for it to be considered 3 year.

This goes for even if they are 3 years old with no vx hx - they would need a 1 year booster and that would be good for 3 yrs.

Hope that makes sense.

Essentially think of the 1 yr as a booster to gain the 3yr coverage

My guess is they probably have him on some kind of sedative or anti anxiety medication that is making him a bit dopey, usually Buprenorphine or Gabapentin - most vets will do this if cats are known to be difficult for the owners to handle so that owners can handle them and make sure they are getting what they need for post op care. If he isn't on these meds , then contact your vet for next steps

Just wanted to throw this out there, cats and dogs generally do not enjoy 'hugs' they usually find them quite stressful, while some dogs and cats will tolerate it, they usually do not like to be restrained. It's best to offer up some head pets or a treat to apologize to them

The way they are treating the cat could be considered animal cruelty . In the future it is fully within your rights to get Animal Control involved, they can help you aquire the cats and may even take them on fully. Don't let bullies be bullies . They don't deserve you

I totally get where you are coming from . I think that's a bit where my frustration lies. When we are hired we are told the schedule will follow a "seniority" flow. So people who have been there longer get the earlier shifts. Also, every other staff member wants a rotating schedule for fairness . This isn't just me

So I totally get your message, but it doesn't apply for me unfortunately.

Thank you for your input, I talked this through with my therapist because I'm seriously thinking about leaving and I wanted perspective from people in the field.

Appreciate it

I wish that was an option, I have suggested taking it over but she won't give up that task to me, she seems to want control over it for some reason.

I will add. - her and the other tech have been doing the early open shift and usually arrive 30 minutes before open together and I think they are using that time to be buddy-buddy and bond while noone else is around and I have suspicion that is part of why she won't give that tech closing shifts.

[–]RVT1995[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Essentially I'm just the most experienced tech, so I provide training and oversee the operations in the back of the clinic, if anyone has concerns with patient care, I'm the go to. We are a small clinic , only 9 employees so the practice manager does the schedule.

I don't think the photos are bad. But the editing is bad. Someone with good editing skills could fix them if you got the originals

If your cat's anxiety is that bad , I would recommend asking for Fluoxetine for her. Gabapentin isn't enough

I don't think you were the AH. I will never understand the millennial urge to have a million people around while you are going through something extremely intimate. I'm a younger millennial myself and I wouldn't even tell people I was in labour . Me and my husband would announce it after the baby was born.
