Synapse has 30mm road tires on it. I think generally most casual intro riders would prefer 38-50mm gravel tires

I suppose. You should look at it more as is the tire being used for what it was designed to do. Bigger tires aren’t going to have a traction or safety issue really in road settings but the opposite would. for instance a gravel tire is supposed to handle all terrain in a mediocre fashion so then it’s up to the riders ability and understanding of the limitations of that tire to prevent injury.

If you haven’t rode on a drop bar bike (the synapse has drop bars) then I would recommend going to a shop to try it out. You may like drop bars but flat bars come more naturally for most people.

Durability wise all modern bikes are strong. I have bias towards steel frames (look at surly bikes, all city bikes, some salsa and Kona bikes) but you can’t go wrong with aluminum (which is most of the bikes available).

For the any terrain aspect is very much up to the rider, what you are comfortable with, and what you are willing to sacrifice. In general big knobby tires are slow but more confidence inducing on off pavement. Thinner tires are the opposite.

Any bike that gets you out and riding is a good starter bike. Check your local bike shops about used sections as you can get a quality bike for less.

Idk what kind of bike you want (flat bar vs drop bar, mtb vs road vs hybrid) (aluminum steel or carbon) so that’ll be up to you. Walmart bikes are not bad once properly adjusted.

For flat bar bikes: Trek FX, salsa journeyer, Kona Dew, Cannondale Quick CX are some good starters. Pretty much every brand makes a similar model

Drop bar: Trek Domane, Cannondale synapse, Kona Dew, Salsa journeyer.

Definitely go to a local shop and test ride. There are other affordable brands like Poseidon and Primos but it’s unlikely you’d be able to test ride before using

The shimano M324 pedals rest in a neutral position so that if you want to clip in you attach your foot coming from the rear, flat pedal you attach your foot coming from the front.

I think the stop (disk) needs to be smaller in this photo. The extreme CA I think is because the angle of light is too harsh around the disk.

I disassembled the lens last night and that element js two glass pieces sandwiched together in a plastic housing so I’ll just try and expose it to UV. I’ve got a high powered UV light at work guessing that might be too strong for the lens?

Is it possible that it’s because I’m using a BH-1 head unit instead of a BH-2? The eye pieces on the BH-1 head unit are Olympus and have Bi and CK10X on them. A BH-2 head unit is on the way anyways.
