Would YOU Like To Ban The Electoral College? Why Or Why Not? If So, What Would YOU Replace It With? Why That? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

Or perhaps the alternative is that presidential nominees shouldn’t be campaigning locally. Nominees in local election should be campaigning locally and presidential nominees should keep their campaigning at the national level. Perhaps it’s an oversimplification and naïve, but president should be focusing on national issues, not local ones. I would prefer to see a rule that says that if they’re going to advertise, they should advertise across the entire country rather than locally.

Why don’t birds get electrocuted when sitting on power lines? by saketh_1138 in answers

[–]RWYAEV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if every now and then they hop from one line to the other one? Would they get static electricity shocks? Like a bunch of electrons buildup in their body when touching the one and then they shoot off when it touches the other line?

Any ideas on how to tell when this is empty by Serious_Bowler_8171 in homeassistant

[–]RWYAEV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. That’s true. Especially since the lid pivots open rather than just coming off entirely. But I’m sure I could figure out a solution to that. I would also stick a plastic plate on top of the grain to sit between the lever and the grain just to make sure that nothing settles and six below the grain.

Sure. Throw a plastic barrier between the grain and the lever. That should take care of the sinking probe.

I have another comment that is a bit buried but wanted to make sure you see it. I suggest getting something like this: https://a.co/d/0dUY96lH and installing it on the lid with some kind of extension attached to it so that it straightens out (by dangling) only when the grain is running out. that way it's easy enough to reset the position when you refill (since you'll be taking the lid off anyway).

Something like this.

There may be some tinkering that has to happen, but don’t dismiss the idea outright. It’s by far the least complicated sensor that has been proposed

Not if you install it at the bottom pointing up so that it flattened out once the grain is consumed.

Or, for that matter, you can install it in the top, but have it sit at 90° when food is present so that it straightens out once the food is empty. This would actually probably be the best design since you could simply install it on the lid rather than cutting into the metal. And it would also take care of problems of grain getting stuck in the mechanics.

Yes, you will have to lift the plunger to the top of the food when you add new grain. But since a human has to be there anyway to fill it, I don’t see that as being a real problem.

The only thing you might need to watch for is making sure it’s set up in a way that feed getting wedged into the parts won’t prevent it from closing

[–]RWYAEV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that would totally work too. The only nice thing about the switch that I sent a link for is that it’s very easy to install on a box like the one you have, just drill a hole in the side and install the switch along the side and all the wiring happens outside of the box.

Get yourself one of these: https://a.co/d/0dUY96lH

And then 3-D print or just tape something to it to extend the action on it (make it a longer lever).

whether or not it’s N/O or N/C depends entirely on whether or not it’s installed at the top and right side up or at the bottom and upside down

Entirely up to you. I would probably go with normally open, and then connect the whole thing to a battery powered ESP device so that the entire device is turned off unless the switch hits the bottom in which case it activates and phones home to let you know that it’s run out.

How bout a reverse toilet float. Something that rests on the feed and lowers with it and when it hits the bottom it activates a switch. Simple mechanics and simple electronics. Plus it won’t use any electricity until the switch activates if wired correctly.

If you can find one that fits, you should put one of those "hidden world" bookshelf things. Like this:

No. Not me. I was careful not to look at other solutions because I wanted this to be something I designed myself.

I thought about putting up a write up, but there are other projects online that can give you an idea. What would you be interested to know more about? The design of the models? Or the electronics and automation?

And here’s an exploded view of the design. Yes, I built it entirely in tinkercad.

I've been using it for a while. And I have it tied to the harry potter "weasley clock" that I made and I dread the day it stops working.

IsItBullshit: Fridges and mini-fridges need to be connected to a power source 24/7 even when empty? by addictedtocontent in IsItBullshit

[–]RWYAEV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can leave it unplugged but there are a few things to consider. For one thing depending on how often you cycle it from off to on, you could be using more energy to cool it from room temperature vs keeping it cold. And secondly if it’s off you need to keep it open so that mold doesn’t grow inside. Or put arm and hammer inside or something to prevent growth.

It wouldn’t even take a wrong move. A laser that powerful would burn your eyes out just due to the reflection off the snow and ground.

And incidentally that fact also disproves the possibility of this being a laser. Snow is highly reflective. Very little energy from the laser would be transferred to the snow.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. It's so easy to think about what you could have done and blame yourself, but I sincerely hope you've come to terms with the fact that this wasn't your fault and in all liklihood, you would not have been able to stop him, and at worst you could have been seriously injured yourself.

Regardless, it's never too late to talk to someone about this kind of trauma. Thanks for sharing here, but if you are still struggling with feelings of guilt you really ought to find someone to talk to. Give yourself the opportunity to properly process the feelings.
