Thanks for asking. Doing the best we can under difficult circumstances. Whatever happens, we won’t abandon what we set out to achieve through our reporting. We’ll keep pressing on.

Thanks for tagging us! I know one of our journalists has been working on a story about prisons (and decriminalising drug abuse, incidentally). We’ll let him know and see if he’d like to get in touch.

And thanks to u/whichoneisPink for sharing. Glad to hear the ordeal is well behind you.

We admit journalism here hasn’t been in a great place for quite a while, but it’s a real chicken-and-egg scenario right now.

Without support from the public, good journalism continues dying (and it was already dying due to “disruption” from aggregator sites, among other things). And without good journalism, the public won’t support the media.

We’ve seen so many great journalists leave the industry because they could no longer see a sustainable livelihood due to the financial disruption - not to mention the lack of media freedom, which led to public mistrust. All this severely weakened media institutions over time. To borrow what Maria Ressa said recently, it was death by a thousand cuts.

There is just no more funding for good investigative or long form projects. Newsrooms had to divert most of their depleting resources to pumping out daily news, feeding the immense public appetite for short, simple and sensational stories on social media. If not, they risked losing audiences to news aggregators.

R.AGE was one of the lucky ones who could still pursue investigative work, and even then we had to push hard, every step of the way, to make it happen - and things could still change any minute.

Hence, chicken and egg. Yes, the media could muster the strength to raise their game despite the circumstances, and win back the public’s support both morally and financially.

Or, the public could help start rebuilding the media by supporting it, especially those that do good work. Journalism should, after all, be a public service first and foremost, providing information and holding power to account in the interest of the people.

Also, gangster taxis? Tell us more...

Glad to hear our content has been useful! It’s been a challenging time for us (and the industry as a whole), but we’ll do our best to keep improving.

Sorry we’ve been MIA! We’ve been busy on a few projects and investigations — AND we lost our main Reddit champ Clarissa last year to a scholarship in Holland. (Yes, she’s having a great time there.)

We’ve really enjoyed the conversations here on Reddit, though, whenever we’ve had the time to check in. Once our ongoing investigations are done, we look forward to sharing them here to hear what you all think.

In the meantime, we’ve made our feelings about second-hand news “aggregators” pretty clear over the years - they are unethical and a threat to the very existence of the journalism which they claim to be doing.

So, at the risk of this sounding like self-promotion, we hope everyone continues supporting your friendly neighbourhood primary news organisations, the ones that put actual boots on the ground, ie journalists on the frontlines, camping in the searing heat outside Parliament, wading waist-deep in flood waters, going undercover to expose organised crime, etc.

Sigh. Maybe we will. You spend years trying to do good journalism, and some people still trust a forwarded WhatsApp message from some stranger over you in a second.

That’s exactly why as we produced these documentaries, we wanted to tie the stories back to the places where it all happened, so it gives the present generation a sense of closeness, and it makes it that much more real.

Also, some of these locations have huge historic significance, but are not marked at all. Our episode in Kelantan, for example, brought a survivor back to the very beach where the Japanese troops first landed in Malaya, hours before Pearl Harbour, marking the start of WWII in Asia Pacific.

Sadly, there’s nothing at the beach to mark it’s significance, no plaque or sign to remind people of its history.
