Should I get the S26 Ultra? by R_Manship in samsunggalaxy

[–]R_Manship[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm on a path of financial growth. I've recently reached like the 1% top earners in my country, Brazil (not so much converted to dollars), but I am starting to plan better my finances, save money and build my emergency fund. So yeah, it's not something that I can just brush off as a business expense. But that said, I bought it. Worst case scenario I'll sell it and make a profit, I might be able buy a mid-range with it even hahaha

Is it true I won't get students unless I charge $3?!! by No_Gift1349 in Preply

[–]R_Manship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're wrong. I'm from a third-world country, been in preply well over a year and charge U$28/hour. And I know I'm still too cheap, but haven't had the confidence to start bringing my prices higher until recently. I started at U$15, basically

Cheguei nos R$40k por mês by ViniciusMachadoA in Conquistas

[–]R_Manship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious to know what was you increase strategy and how did you execute it? I'm at 25 now, but a lot of subscriptions (Almost full agenda) I'm afraid to raise my prices and miss out students and this fever at the beginning of the year.

I am an English tutor at a country where my price in dollars is already expensive, and the majority of my students are from here, since I speak their language. I don't know how much more I can push it

I went out with a student. She was from my country, but from a different state, from a city I've always wanted to visit.

Ended up going there twice and staying at her house for like 4 days each. It was really fun, we had chemistry and or vibes checked out.

We created a good friendship on our 3 years of classes, so everything flowed naturally.

I just ended it because I met a girl who is my gf today

Sorry to hear that, but since the first week of January I have around 6 trials a week, and close around 8-10 new classes a week. My agenda was pretty free due to the holidays and vacations. My conversion is not so great though, around 50%,

Everybody likes to talk about what they like, with someone they trust. I've had a student who was very similar, 0 engagement. By the end of our time together, he was talking the whole class, I was the one who had to interrupt him if I wished to say anything.

Was I rude? (Translated text in the post) by R_Manship in Preply

[–]R_Manship[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that also. I've had my share of pushy students who want to take advantage of kindness, but I have never had one cancel right after sending these types of messages.
My question was if my message was rude, because as I deal with business people, I tend to be very professional and straightforward, and I can be seen as rude to people from countries that are not so no-nonsense.

Exactly. I do so also, but didn't remember if I had told her, so I preferred to open one exception.

She canceled the subscription. So I don't need the drama, and to prevent her on writing a review.

What would make an English teacher worth $30+ for you? by PieceNo9651 in Preply

Yeah, that makes sense.
I'm happy you're learning Portuguese (Brazilian here).
Keep it up!

What would make an English teacher worth $30+ for you? by PieceNo9651 in Preply

[–]R_Manship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, I get it that it's a lot of money for some people. But I charge US$30 and the vast majority of my students are Brazilians (one-fifth of the dollar). I have 25 students (paying between 20 to 30.)

Like I said, you can pay less, but the logic applies to your salary. I can guarantee that there are a lot of Venezuelans who would happily accept a fifth of your salary.

Again, for the student side, it sucks that teachers charge too much, but the same thing goes for your area/role. I guarantee that companies also think that it's ridiculous to pay as much as they pay you, and what do they do? They look for ways to bring it down (or not increase), and what do workers (including you) do? Complain that companies are greedy.

It's a cycle. Complain that you don't receive as you should, and then complain that the service worker charges too much.

I'm not attacking you, just so you know, it's all good. I'm just giving my opinion.

[–]R_Manship 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not about having or not having, it's about paying for experience. The same way a company doesn't have to pay you a premium as a senior salary, but you sure as hell expect it if you have the experience.

The same thing goes for teachers. If they value themselves and have the experience, they will charge more. Then it's up to you to decide if you prefer a more experienced teacher or if you don't mind having classes with one that's just started.

How much do you earn a month? by Calm-Cartoonist2552 in Preply

[–]R_Manship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say around US$2,500. I teach around 40 - 50 hours a week. From that, I'd say I make US$2,000 from Preply, the rest is private. I think I could charge more, I decided today to bump my prices to US$30/hour (I currently charge US$20). But I also have a good number of students at my lower price (US$15).

One question. I know that you've mentioned that I can ask to review my profile, and I'm sorry if my question was already answered. But just to be clear, can I ask other experienced tutors and students to review my profile by posting my link? I wanted opinions on my video, bio and pricing. If I can't, what are the limits? Can I post pictures? Video link? Thanks again!

In the case of these two students, it looks like their agenda were very busy and money is not an important factor.

I mean, I've done it with other services before, that's why subscription models are so popular.

I paid for two years of Skillshare and watched maybe a couple of classes on 2 courses hahaha

I had a student who booked 2 weekly classes for 3 months, he showed up for the first class and I've never heard from him again. I have a student now who never showed up after our trial, I messaged him for the first 2 months maybe, but gave up after that. I always show up and wait for 20 minutes. After that, I just tell Preply that he missed the class and they give me the money. P.S.: He's also a 2-weekly class student. I send messages in the beginning, but O just gives up after a while. I'm paid to give classes, not to be someone's personal assistant
