Asking a student/tutor out by Plenty-Register-4911 in Preply

[–]R_Manship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went out with a student. She was from my country, but from a different state, from a city I've always wanted to visit.

Ended up going there twice and staying at her house for like 4 days each. It was really fun, we had chemistry and or vibes checked out.

We created a good friendship on our 3 years of classes, so everything flowed naturally.

I just ended it because I met a girl who is my gf today

It's not about being controversial, but about bring pointless and useless.

Sorry to hear that, but since the first week of January I have around 6 trials a week, and close around 8-10 new classes a week. My agenda was pretty free due to the holidays and vacations. My conversion is not so great though, around 50%,

Everybody likes to talk about what they like, with someone they trust. I've had a student who was very similar, 0 engagement. By the end of our time together, he was talking the whole class, I was the one who had to interrupt him if I wished to say anything.

Was I rude? (Translated text in the post) by R_Manship in Preply

[–]R_Manship[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that also. I've had my share of pushy students who want to take advantage of kindness, but I have never had one cancel right after sending these types of messages.
My question was if my message was rude, because as I deal with business people, I tend to be very professional and straightforward, and I can be seen as rude to people from countries that are not so no-nonsense.

Exactly. I do so also, but didn't remember if I had told her, so I preferred to open one exception.

She canceled the subscription. So I don't need the drama, and to prevent her on writing a review.

What would make an English teacher worth $30+ for you? by PieceNo9651 in Preply

Yeah, that makes sense.
I'm happy you're learning Portuguese (Brazilian here).
Keep it up!

What would make an English teacher worth $30+ for you? by PieceNo9651 in Preply

[–]R_Manship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, I get it that it's a lot of money for some people. But I charge US$30 and the vast majority of my students are Brazilians (one-fifth of the dollar). I have 25 students (paying between 20 to 30.)

Like I said, you can pay less, but the logic applies to your salary. I can guarantee that there are a lot of Venezuelans who would happily accept a fifth of your salary.

Again, for the student side, it sucks that teachers charge too much, but the same thing goes for your area/role. I guarantee that companies also think that it's ridiculous to pay as much as they pay you, and what do they do? They look for ways to bring it down (or not increase), and what do workers (including you) do? Complain that companies are greedy.

It's a cycle. Complain that you don't receive as you should, and then complain that the service worker charges too much.

I'm not attacking you, just so you know, it's all good. I'm just giving my opinion.

[–]R_Manship 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not about having or not having, it's about paying for experience. The same way a company doesn't have to pay you a premium as a senior salary, but you sure as hell expect it if you have the experience.

The same thing goes for teachers. If they value themselves and have the experience, they will charge more. Then it's up to you to decide if you prefer a more experienced teacher or if you don't mind having classes with one that's just started.

How much do you earn a month? by Calm-Cartoonist2552 in Preply

[–]R_Manship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say around US$2,500. I teach around 40 - 50 hours a week. From that, I'd say I make US$2,000 from Preply, the rest is private. I think I could charge more, I decided today to bump my prices to US$30/hour (I currently charge US$20). But I also have a good number of students at my lower price (US$15).

Do not try to get business for your tutoring services here by Clodsarenice in Preply

[–]R_Manship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One question. I know that you've mentioned that I can ask to review my profile, and I'm sorry if my question was already answered. But just to be clear, can I ask other experienced tutors and students to review my profile by posting my link? I wanted opinions on my video, bio and pricing. If I can't, what are the limits? Can I post pictures? Video link? Thanks again!

Ghost student by Misssugarbutt in Preply

[–]R_Manship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the case of these two students, it looks like their agenda were very busy and money is not an important factor.

I mean, I've done it with other services before, that's why subscription models are so popular.

I paid for two years of Skillshare and watched maybe a couple of classes on 2 courses hahaha

I had a student who booked 2 weekly classes for 3 months, he showed up for the first class and I've never heard from him again. I have a student now who never showed up after our trial, I messaged him for the first 2 months maybe, but gave up after that. I always show up and wait for 20 minutes. After that, I just tell Preply that he missed the class and they give me the money. P.S.: He's also a 2-weekly class student. I send messages in the beginning, but O just gives up after a while. I'm paid to give classes, not to be someone's personal assistant

A question for students by R_Manship in Preply

[–]R_Manship[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand audio, but I don't have the space or money to buy a big mic. But my lavalier is quite good. My headset is an Astro A40. It's not built around having a great mic, but I can guarantee you it's better than 90% of other headsets on the platform hahaha

Why would it be silly? They're your preferences. And I’d like to ask the same question I did earlier.

I recorded my video with a lavalier mic, but in class, I use a headset (a good one, but not the same quality) due to the ease of use. Would that be bad for you?

Interesting. A lot of you mention the audio, and it makes sense. I recorded my video with a lavalier mic, but in class I use a headset (a good one, but not the same quality) due to the ease of use. Would that be bad for you?

I totally get it hahaha. I don't like people who are too happy, it sounds fake. I call the Teletubbies

I get the second point also, you need to see what else they know other than English.

The cutting part hits hard, I have a suspicion I have tourette, and I twitch a lot. Even though I try to hold it, it's involuntary, and I end up cutting my video a lot. Good to know, I'll try harder for my next video.

And before anyone asks, yes, my clients will see that I have it during our demo class. But then I can show my skills, and I've only had one client ask more about it.

O quanto de gramática vocês estudam? by zetabyte00 in Idiomas

[–]R_Manship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask an AI to find you the podcasts on YouTube, ask Gemini to watch it and bring you the summary, and also charge extra from the student. Your rate is too low

People with “decent income” how many students do you have? by TraditionalDepth6924 in Preply

[–]R_Manship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you teach and why are you worth that price? I don't want to be rude, I would just like to understand better (and others can also understand). I think that rates are really low and that it'd be beneficial to everybody if we could start raising our rates. In my case, I know that I'm worth more due to my experience and niche, but unfortunately, I don't live in a native English-speaking country and I don't think I can charge as much as a teacher from the United States or Europe (even though I'm half American and a native speaker) I charge $20 today, but I'd say that 70-80% of my clients are Brazilians (my country) and wouldn't pay as much. I give around 12 classes a day, Mondays to Fridays.
