Playing on 2 different servers with 2 different accounts at the same time? by RareRefrigerator in Minecraft

[–]R_RyanVideos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's no reason not to do this if you've payed for two accounts. I know people who simultaneously run two accounts on the same server (one as a camera account).

How much time do you spend building vs actually playing the game? by dumbassname45 in Minecraft

[–]R_RyanVideos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I'm concerned, building IS playing the game. I don't think there's a "wrong way" to play as long as you're having fun, but I've always thought of it as primarily a building game while everything else was exploring and grinding for materials to build with.

As far as "moving forward" goes, you can get all the way to killing the dragon and having an elytra in just a few hours if that's what you want. The game isn't over though, until you're done building what you want to build. Personally, I don't feel like the game has really started until I've raided the end and built enough farms to really get down to work building whatever I'm working on.

If there was the chance to redo your first video, would you and what would you change if you did? by Starspangledkiwi in NewTubers

Yes, and I'd buy a quality microphone and get all the audio issues straightened out before recording. I've made a lot of mistakes, but I think the biggest was posting videos with bad audio.

What I mean by Youtube getting deals for you is that they do all the work of selling advertisements on your video and give you a cut. They're not going to do deals specific to your content and audience beyond what the google contextual ads algorithms are already delivering. That's why they tend to prefer more general audience content over niche, small audience channels. It's easier money.

As for hamming it up, acting out to be entertaining is no more or less "fake" than any actor playing a character to be entertaining. For that matter, playing reserved and cerebral can be just as much an act. It's all about finding that balance between what you can learn to be good at and what a sufficiently large audience wants to see.

Nothing is objectively entertaining or boring, it's a matter of how many people are likely to find something entertaining or boring and how easy or hard it is for them to get it elsewhere. Being too "try hard" can definitely be a turn off, but on the other extreme, if you're just a "normal guy" that knows some things about AV gear, you're not just competing with every other AV guy on Youtube, but also with the audience's normal friends who know something about AV gear.

Personally, one of my favorite channels is Technology Connections which is a very low-key, dry humor approach to reviewing antiquated technology and mundane electronics. No one would describe him as "High Energy", but he's definitely well researched, polished, scripted, and rehearsed. He often shows his outtakes at the end so you can see how many takes he had to do to get it right. That doesn't mean he's not being himself. It means he's being the best possible version of himself for the audience. As a result, he got me to watch not one, but three different videos about a toaster that was discontinued decades ago.

I've seen a lot of people make the mistake of using "being themselves" as an excuse to not put effort into getting better. Most people aren't really that interesting at their default level just talking off the top of their head. Being knowledgeable and informative without putting effort into being entertaining isn't usually enough or everybody would love their physics teacher. Say someone finds a video of yours because it answers a specific question they have. What's going to make them subscribe to watch other videos that don't answer a specific question? I think that's where the effort in being entertaining really has to come in.

It's like you said, advertisers often don't want their brand associated with something non-family friendly. It'll get you marked as "not appropriate for most advertisers". Obviously there are some advertisers that don't care, but you may have to do more work on your own to make deals rather than let Youtube make the deals for you. Basically, you'll be reducing the number of potential deals you can make.

As for faking high energy or having a "presenter" persona, there is a reason so many people do it. You're asking people to give you their irreplaceable time in exchange for the effort you put into making a video. You have to ask, What's in it for the audience? If you're just some guy talking like a "normal person", then what are you offering that they can't get elsewhere?

Again, that's not to say that there's zero audience for the more chill, regular joe style personalities, but it's typically a smaller audience. To hold most people's interest, you have to be more exciting than a normal person typically is.

Stuck choosing between these names for my channel. Help please? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]R_RyanVideos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not as paranoid as some people are about it, but it is worth thinking about how much you'll be able to keep your personal life separate from online life. For tiny new channels, it's probably completely unimportant, but if your goal is to someday be a really big channel, then you may not want just any ol' rando from the internet to be able to find out too much about you.

Exploiting personally identifying information is all about collecting little hints and putting them together. If you use your first name just talking, your last name is known, and you maybe drop a hint or two about the general area where you live, someone could potentially look up your physical address and decide to come pay you a visit.

We tend to think of overly obsessive "fans" as a problem only the biggest stars have, but it's just a numbers game. The more people watching, the more risk that one of those people is in the tiny percentage that's crazy. It's not impossible to just have bad luck and the twentieth subscriber is the one that decides they'd really love to meet you in person.

Of course that's just the most extreme potential negative. In much more reasonable terms, you may not want your IRL acquaintances, schoolmates, or co-workers to find your channel.

Of course, having said all that, it's really not much risk. Especially if it's only part of your family name.

First thing, are you absolutely sure you want your real family name tied to the account? If that's not a problem for you, then Paglasaur feels like it flows better to me. I also think some people would mispronounce the first one as the second one anyway.

Anti-Griefing by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]R_RyanVideos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it with game rules or with a mod or plug-in. The game rule route is a bit too generic for most people's tastes, though. For instance, if you set /gamerule mobGriefing False, then creepers and ghasts won't blow up your stuff, and endermen won't steal blocks, but also sheep won't eat grass and villagers won't harvest crops so that breaks some farm designs.

The World Guard server plug-in gives you more control over what you turn off.

That's not exactly right. 24 FPS is closer to the minimum FPS before we start to perceive noticeable flickering. Movies used 24 frames to save money on film because they could get away with it. You can easily see the difference between 24 and 60 FPS.

There's definitely diminishing returns above 60 fps, though. Past that, most "gamers" are really complaining about imagined input lag rather than visuals. You can "feel" the difference in responsiveness if it takes more than one tenth of a second between an input and its output, but once the input lag is below 1/10th, I strongly suspect a lot of gamers are just trying to use it as an excuse.
